Lord of the Butterflies | Andrea Gibson
46 posts | 13 read | 31 to read
Andrea Gibson's latest collection is a masterful showcase from the poet whose writing and performances have captured the hearts of millions. With artful and nuanced looks at gender, romance, loss, and family, Lord of the Butterflies is a new peak in Gibson's career. Each emotion here is deft and delicate, resting inside of imagery heavy enough to sink the heart, while giving the body wings to soar.

I read this between July 3 & 14th and gave it 4.5 ⭐️ on Good Reads. A moving collection of poetry that spans love, gender, loss, romance, family and current US politics. Gibson‘s voice is strong & their use of language is lush.

3 books of poetry, much of which I've drunk like water these past few hours and one non-fiction book that looks small but is going to be much more than its size suggests. Sometimes a little poetry is needed to break your heart and remind you of the beauty of the world and language.

Andrea Gibson is a gem whose words grip with all the artistry of old-fashioned poetry, all the raw emotion and radical political back-droppings of Instagram poetry, and all the compelling flow of spoken word. Very few misses in this powerful collection of hits. TW: mental illness, self-harm, suicidal ideation, gun violence. Excerpts From 'Your Life'

They are going to kill your own god
So you can love for the first time
They are going to keep telling you
Your heartbeat is a pre existing condition.
They are going to keep telling you
You are a crime of nature
You're going to look at all your options
And choose conviction."

Excerpt From 'Good Light'

"When they told me god was always watching
I said who wants to worship a diary thief?
I didn't dare say who wants to worship anyone
Who would see everything and just sit there doing nothing"

I just finished this amazing volume of poetry. It shares and evokes so many feelings.....memories....
Gay centered, and deep, the poems 'Orlando', and 'America,Reloaded' brought me to tears. I loved this!!

Another wonderful collection of poetry by Andrea Gibson. They write poems about politics, about love, about homophobia and Lyme's disease with fluid grace and skill. #queerbooks #nonbinarybooks #poems

I'm ok with not buying books, I'm a big supporter of libraries. But I do like owning certain books. And I REALLY want a hard copy of Andrea Gibson's new poetry collection, probably more than any other book. I'd like her other collection too, honestly. And I also really want to read Caitlin Doughty's books as well, but this one most of all.

Well done. Beautifully written poems that reach out to you no matter how you identify yourself in this world. Her poem on panic attacks is enlightening and so true! Great stuff.

So, so glad I decided to check out Andrea Gibson this year. It‘s been a long time since I discovered a new favorite poet. #poetry #queerbooks

farrahkohn I went to one of her readings last year in Minneapolis! 10mo
Broke_Girl_Reads @farrahkohn I got the book at a reading and I‘m so glad I got the chance to go to one! The place was packed but everyone was completely rapt. It was awesome 10mo
farrahkohn @Broke_Girl_Reads yeah, there was a moment at the reading I attended during which she read a heavy poem, the room was so silent and still... it was lovely. 10mo

Some of these poems make you want to stop reading and go share them with a friend, now. Others feel like private messages, meant just for you. Some need to be posted on billboards and played over the airwaves for all to see and hear. Gibson's writing reminds us that poetry is for everyone to read.
