Several female secret agents worked in WWII France, trained and sent there by the British Special Operations Executive. Many of them gave their lives for a free France. I read a lot about WWII nurses and they were always treated as noncombatants, and while these women were never actual soldiers, they directly and indirectly killed many Nazis, and they were not treated differently from male agents.

From my Kindle #TBR: I find the female agents, spies & undercover resistance workers during WWII fascinating.

“From the Special Operations Executive‘s nascent days organizing escape lines for fallen pickets inside France, women had been recruited as special agents and undercover assets.”

Woke up at 1 and couldn‘t get back to sleep—but at least I was able to finish this one! I teach history, have a degree in history and have always loved learning more about WW2. I knew nothing about these women and the role they played in getting information and helping the Allies prepare for the D-Day invasion. Their stories are amazing and it‘s ridiculous that they are not a bigger part of the history that is told.

1. My husband and kids were various superheroes. So I went as Wonder Woman. 😁😁

2. I am currently reading the tagged book- non-fiction WW2 history. I desperately needed to read about some bad ass women.

The wonderful novelist Erika Robuck recommends this great nonfiction take on World War II lady spies for today's #read99women. Check it out! http://www.greermacallister.com/blog/2020/1/29/read99women-erika-robuck

Such a fascinating subject, but I was disappointed in the actual relating of their stories by the author. A book I expected to be compelling was rather dry in places. 3⭐️

This was a book club book, but I was excited. Nonfiction about women who worked for the English government before d-day and after. It was strangle familiar, I think because I read a another book about the same people (code name: lise).

One hell of a book to read in conjunction with A Woman of No Importance (I super wonder how these two researchers got on, ahem). So much in here about everything from Britain‘s anti-Semitism at the beginning of the war (thinking Jewish refugees might be Vichy spies?!?!!!) to Charles de Gaulle‘s post-war anti-British mythmaking ... and a lot more. Masterful literary nonfiction touches, built on excellent archival research. 5⭐️. #history #WWII

TrishB The cover and the title of this book really put me off, but your review has really made me rethink! Stacked. 5y
Crazeedi Sounds good 5y
suzisteffen @TrishB yes “girls” WHY?!?! But the book itself is definitely solid, and as I said, read together with “A Woman of No Importance” (and Susan Elia MacNeal‘s Maggie Hope series, TBH) is super informative. I might‘ve overpraised in last night‘s review; let‘s say 4.5 stars. 😂 5y
suzisteffen @Crazeedi I definitely liked it! 5y

Also just starting this one, more #WWII #history of women spies. (This is nonfiction; one wonders if The Alice Network is based on the same people?)

History of a small group of women who became spies and organized resistance in preparation for the allied invasion on D-Day. Very readable, good intro to the topic. Timely. Nazis are still evil, people!! We always need to be fighting them. https://cannonballread.com/2019/05/d-day-girls-elcicco/
