Beautiful Exiles
Beautiful Exiles | Meg Waite Clayton
14 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 31 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Meg Waite Clayton comes a riveting novel based on one of the most volatile and intoxicating real-life love affairs of the twentieth century. Key West, 1936. Headstrong, accomplished journalist Martha Gellhorn is confident with words but less so with men when she meets disheveled literary titan Ernest Hemingway in a dive bar. Their friendship--forged over writing, talk, and family dinners--flourishes into something undeniable in Madrid while they're covering the Spanish Civil War. Martha reveres him. The very married Hemingway is taken with Martha--her beauty, her ambition, and her fearless spirit. And as Hemingway tells her, the most powerful love stories are always set against the fury of war. The risks are so much greater. They're made for each other. With their romance unfolding as they travel the globe, Martha establishes herself as one of the world's foremost war correspondents, and Hemingway begins the novel that will win him the Nobel Prize for Literature. Beautiful Exiles is a stirring story of lovers and rivals, of the breathless attraction to power and fame, and of one woman--ahead of her time--claiming her own identity from the wreckage of love.

As Skinner squeezed four perfect grapefruit and eight clean limes one by one into a rusty blender and topped them with a frightening amount of rum and a maraschino drizzle, Hemingway said, “I knew St. Louis in my youth. All the women in the world worth knowing come from St. Louis.”

Added some lime sherbet the the listed ingredients and it‘s pretty good #foodspiration

MaureenMc Huh, maybe I like Hemingway after all. #fromtheLou 3y

It‘s been a while & I have a lot of posts to catch up on - here we go...

This was a Bingo/Make Me Read It pick by @Kalalalatja 🙂. Unfortunately it wasn‘t for me - turns out I‘m not so interested in Hemingway & his wives 🤷🏻‍♀️. But fortunately, it‘s one more step up #MountTBR 🙌🏻. Thanks for the pick, @Kalalalatja 🙂

Kalalalatja Hmmm.. I don‘t think I have read this, so I‘m not sure the rec came from me 😅 4y
Sweettartlaura @Kalalalatja you chose a random number & it corresponded to this book on my TBR list 🙂. And it‘s ok that I didn‘t love it. I just HAD to get out of my slump. And I HAVE to whittle down my owned TBR. This helped with both. So thanks for playing 😉 4y
Kalalalatja Ah, now I remember! 😄 glad it helped get you out of your slump ☺️ 4y

Pickpick

So much realness. A real life married couple pronounced “writer and writer” makes for an FASCINATING emotional, whirlwind of a book. Interesting World War II bits of history that just don‘t make it into most mainstream productions.
A true JEWEL to be experienced. Beware; lots of other treasured books are mentioned throughout the novel. A novel based on one of the most “volatile and intoxicatingly real-life love affairs of the twentieth century”

Started this on one of my train journeys last week- got about 1/3 of the way in and just lost interest - so have bailed for now! May return....

Cathythoughts Yes ! That just happens sometimes, doesn‘t it !!! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Kalalalatja I really don‘t get the fascination with Hemingway and all his ladies, tbh 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Cinfhen Too bad, it sounds promising 6y

Mdargusch I agree @Kalalalatja but people kept recommending Paris Wife so I did finally read that one and I liked it. But I haven‘t been compelled to read about his other wives. 6y
sammisho I chose this book for my Kindle firsts pick...Hemingway sounds like an ass. Never been able to read any of his books because I don't think he was a nice person. 6y
TrishB @Kalalalatja @Mdargusch totally agree! This was a freebie and I thought I‘d give it a go. He definitely sounds like an arse.... so no more!! 6y
TrishB @sammisho agreed 👍🏻 6y

This is the 2nd book I‘ve read about Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn, an author that he met in Key West. It‘s interesting to see how two different authors have written a historical novel about a real life couple.

Booksnchill I read Paula McClain‘s as well- thought about reading this so will await what you have to say! 6y
rustoryhuf @Booksnchill so far I‘m liking this one better, as I find myself more involved with the story. The characters seem more evolved. 6y
Theshadedbuffalo I have that mug, too!! 6y
rustoryhuf @Theshadedbuffalo Mother‘s Day gift from the woman child. Still trying to figure out her message 6y
Theshadedbuffalo @rustoryhuf 😆 it was a Mother‘s Day gift for me too! About 5 years ago. It was a joke, because at that point I never did anything for myself, and my husband would jokingly call me a diva. 6y

Starting this book today and I can't stop reading it now. It's about the relationship between Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway and I'm completely obsessed! At one point they said #idoidoido #AbbainAugust

emilyhaldi Ooohhh I loved Mrs. Hemingway and have been meaning to read The Paris Wife for so long!! Adding this to my tbr too 😉 (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola There‘s another new book about them I think that I want to read. (edited) 6y
Lidia I want to read Love and ruin too! I just loved The Paris wife and Circling the sun @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi 6y
Cinfhen I just read Love & Ruin ~ it was good but a bit too much detail for me, it kind of overpowered the story in a way. I‘d be curious to compare the two books, it was definitely an exciting time in history 6y

I've never turned down multiple free books before and today seems like a bad time to start.

TrishB In a real sulk this isn‘t available in UK!! Very unfair 😔 6y
ErikaB @TrishB If it makes you feel any better, I've got a bunch of ebooks and digital music that I want from Amazon UK that the site will never let me buy! 😉 Sometimes it's a long wait until they make it here, if at all. 6y
TrishB It works both ways I guess! 6y
