I‘m going to be sad to leave today. It was wonderful to be in a place with limited Internet and limited people. The perfect pandemic getaway. Unfortunately, it‘s back to the real world today....

Extraordinary first novel. Innovative, charming, touching and wholly engrossing. Highly recommended. Childhood will never be quite the same again.

Loving this. Inspired, weird, clever as hell. And the author is coming to talk at my bookshop on September 11!

Reed weaves vignettes together for an imaginative narrative told in a unique way. I finished it in two sittings, and highly recommend it. @Tin_House

A Key to Treehouse Living is a magical, often humorous, insightful and beautiful book. I loved the play on reference text & that it didn‘t impede movement through narrative. Something that could have been gimmicky instead felt genuine, full of heart & curiosity. It took a couple tries for me to get into it & there are some aspects which gave me pause to fully endorsing it, but at the end I‘m left with fuzzy feelings & a desire to share this story.

The imagery is so damn fine! And the viewpoint of the 13-year old chronicling his world is charming.
Thank you to Book Riot for the ARC.

It‘s official: I‘m giving up on ARCs. I do know the incredible difficulty and vulnerability that comes with writing, but if a book sucks, I‘m just not going to finish it!

With advance copies, though, I feel all prickly with guilt. The books stare at me from the mantel, the table, the desk as they migrate around my house while I avoid them.

Would I read these as manuscripts to edit them? Heck yes! Will I read them for leisure? No, thanks.

LeahBergen I hear you. I‘ve read some (shhh!) pretty crappy ARCs and I‘ve all but given up on them. I still enter the odd giveaway on Goodreads for authors I‘ve heard of or read before, though. 6y
saresmoore @LeahBergen I think your approach is very smart. Reading isn‘t actually my job so I‘d prefer to enjoy it! 6y
readordierachel Good for you! I have so many half-read digital arcs. So many. They can be very hit or miss and I feel you about the guilt. I guess the benefit of digital is that you can't see them. 6y

saresmoore @ReadOrDieRachel So true! I‘ve been feeling such an obligation to review all of the books I read, but mostly I don‘t want to. Life is just too damn short. 6y
Zelma Good decision. I think bookish social media has affected people‘s reading too much with the pressure to read and review more. Arcs are fine but not necessary as there are so many books in the world to read and enjoy. I grab some at conferences but have no compunction to read them quickly. I also barely review anything anymore, sometimes only logging a date and star rating for a book on GR. 6y
Suet624 So did you try these and not like them? Or are you avoiding them preemptively? 6y
saresmoore @Suet624 I tried both of them and didn‘t like them. They both had good writing moments, but I couldn‘t get into the style of either one. 6y
saresmoore @Zelma Same here! I do love to share a great book on Litsy, but often, I quote it or blurb about it a few times and then don‘t really feel the need to leave a formal review. 6y
Zelma @saresmoore I‘m finding it a tough habit to break, but I keep reminding myself that I never reviewed books before GR existed and my reading was just as rich and satisfying. I have started toying with the idea of quitting logging and rating books altogether. But I don‘t know if i can do that quite yet. 😬 6y
saresmoore @Zelma I feel the same way! I worry that I would lose track of my reading and forget what I‘ve already read. But I lived for most of my life having to read 20 pages of a book before I figured out if I‘d already read it or not and it wasn‘t a big deal. 😆 6y
Zelma @saresmoore great point. My life will not be affected negatively if I can‘t recall every single title I‘ve ever read or looked at. I find I keep falling prey to this idea that something is less relevant or important if I don‘t post about it. Not so much in FB but about reviewing or talking about a title. I have 2 books I haven‘t reviewed here recently and I keep dwelling on it. 6y
saresmoore @Zelma It sounds like we are both due for a mindset shift! I‘m thinking I‘ll revisit a favorite Brene Brown book for inspiration and NOT post about it. 🙃 6y

Tiny Book Tuesday! I got this for free and absolutely loved it! It was written with alphabetic words about a boy living in the outside world. Very poignant and great writing. 5 stars

saresmoore In my defense, a puppy would cut down on my reading time significantly! I‘m just not ready for that kind of commitment. @Moray_Reads 6y
