🤘“In the end, METAL is a lot of things - it‘s about those moments when you find yourself face-to-face with the worst versions of yourself, moments when all looks like doom - but at its heart it‘s a love letter to comic book storytelling at its most lunatic...” - from the introduction by the author🤘

Well, this book was full-on cuckoo nuts. An army of evil Batmans try to conquer the Multiverse! I loved every bonkers moment!

🤘#SummerOfShort3🤘

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Plus the brutal origin of DC‘s immortal hero, Bobo the Detective Chimp! And a cameo by the Ultima Thule, Superjudge Nix Uotan‘s multiversal ship that‘s piloted by music! This book was INSANE, yo. 4y

Actual Sentences In This Book aka Why I Love Comics:

“I realized back at the Oblivion Bar that the coordinates for the Dark Multiverse are not far from the Phantom Zone.”

“Now the egg will power the reversed cannon and its beam will darken the core of the Earth, then, through this, the very mace you recovered, the Earth will be guided down through the portal and into the dark, once and for all.”

TobeyTheScavengerMonk “I think I have an idea. That baby universe is rich with cosmic potential, pulled straight from the World Forge. If we can free it, it‘ll stop the Carrier in it‘s tracks. And all that positive energy might set the Multiverse back on the right track” #SummerOfShort3 4y

I am a grown man, but I still squeal internally when Neil Gaiman‘s Sandman characters show up in the DC Universe proper.

It is easy to forget that Gaiman‘s masterwork is rooted in the DCU, but Dream stops by Justice League headquarters in the early issues and there‘s even a Martian Manhunter/Oreo cookie gag.

Plus Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne show up at the Wake.

So cool that Daniel/Dream got to play a part in METAL.

ChasingOm 🤯🤯🤯 4y
NotCool I always wondered if Batman had a cameo in Wake or if it was someone dreaming they were Batman. 4y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @NotCool Gaiman has actually said that the panel was originally going to be bigger, with Clark‘s cape peeking out of the bottom of his suit because he would always be scared in dreams that people would figure out his identity. I always liked the detail that when Clark dreams he‘s Clark, but when Bruce dreams he‘s Batman. 4y

Finally!

In every single one of the last, jeez, 11 or 12 volumes of my chronological read-through of the DC Universe someone mentions that some kind of multiversal cataclysm is imminent.

It‘s all been leading up to 2017‘s METAL event, and here we are. After I read these 3 books, I‘m going to take a break from DC and work on some other comics for awhile.

I was expecting another big clunky crossover "event", guaranteed to change everything until the next event came along, but this was actually good. Snyder has been writing Batman for awhile now, and seems to have him down pat. The artwork was dicey in places, but overall it was bright, exciting and easy to tell who's punching who. 3 ??? 1/2 out of 5.

TieDyeDude I enjoyed this event, but I think I liked the tie-in collections more! 5y

I often judge superhero comics by whether they're accessible to new readers. They should either scan well if you know little to nothing about the universe OR they should be a gateway that makes you really, really want to learn what led to all this.

I'm not a DC neophyte anymore, but I still felt like Metal was targeted at people who know EVERYTHING. I found a few flashes of cool, but mostly I was bored. Recced for old timers only. #caseyplusbooks

mcipher I tried this one and it was way over my head. I‘ve not read any other DC comics so I think I was definitely not the intended audience! 5y
xicanti @mcipher I've read enough DC stuff now that I usually recognize things, but it felt like this one pulled on all sorts of emotional cues I'd never encountered elsewhere. Even with the prequel volume under my belt, I wasn't engaged enough to enjoy the wild twists everyone raves about. Sadness. (edited) 5y

This DC comic event was epic! I read the four collected editions in one day, which was a lot to take in. I almost liked the tie-ins between than the main story.

GrilledCheeseSamurai The tie ins for this series are awesome and I love how Metal has changed the entire DC universe going forward! Great stuff! 👍 6y

This was a crazy ride into the DC multi-verse! I'm going to have to go back and read the entire Scott Snyder run of Batman now. He made me enjoy DC comics again! Greg Capullo's art is mind-blowing! I have to agree with @cobwebmoth I hear Kevin Conroy's voice as I read this book. He is Batman.
#CBBR #WeveGotissues @GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails

GrilledCheeseSamurai The stuff that Snyder is doing with Justice League right now is awesome too. And it spirals right out of this story. 👌 6y

Mehso-so

Having never read a DC comic before or seen the new movies I realized going into this it would probably be al lot. But it was a lot, a lot. Lol, I felt a little exhausted like the people at this dinner party. “Can we just have some down time?” Maybe it was just not my jam. I did love Wonder Woman‘s unfailing hope/optimism/power of friendship. Looking forward to the next month‘s pick. #wevegotissues

Suet624 It‘s always nice to find a character who is unfailing optimistic. 6y

SQUEE!! Okay, so I am sure there‘s a lot of stuff I didn‘t understand because I‘ve only read one DC comic before, and that was a Wonder Woman reboot. BUT, I thoroughly enjoyed this. The art was great and the story was compelling. Great pick @GrilledCheeseSamurai 👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻👍🏻👊🏻

GrilledCheeseSamurai Yaaaay! Glad you liked it. The repercussions of this series are having great effect on the titles in the DC universe going forward. There's a mini series called Justice League: No Justice that just finished off (not sure when the Tpb is out) that is a great epilogue for metal. It's only 4 issues so quick to read. 6y

“‘Lost to history is a story...‘ Those were his opening lines. About a tale you hoped was long forgotten. The story of a dark god, a lord of nightmare. But as you can now see, as I unwrap your ancient eyes... The Birdman lied.”

What is real? Who can be trusted? What happens when everyone is trying to #manipulate the story for their own ends?

Fun story and fantastic artwork for #cbbr #WeveGotIssues

I was disappointed when @GrilledCheeseSamurai posted this as the next pick for #CBBR #wevegotissues because it wasn‘t available on Hoopla. I‘m still 7th in line at my library for a physical copy, because it is still “on order”. Then, just a few minutes ago, I received an email from Hoopla saying this was now available! It‘s like they knew I needed a break from the other book I‘m reading. #HappyDance #EveningPlans

emtobiasz Ooh! Just curious, since I use hoopla a lot: why did they email you about it? Did you ask to add it, or are you signed up for a new release notification? 6y
DGRachel @emtobiasz I must be signed up to get “what‘s trending in comics” emails from them and it just happened to be a nice coincidence that the one I needed for this buddy read was featured. 😊 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Niiiice! I thought maybe it would be a bit tough(er) for people to get this book since it was so new...but at the same time wanted to celebrate its release. Glad you were able to get a copy. 🤘 6y
DGRachel @GrilledCheeseSamurai Me, too! I‘m enjoying it so far. 😊 6y

Dark Nights Metal came out in stores today and @TricksyTails & I are super pumped to offer up this CRAZY Batman story as our #WeveGotIssues #CBBR pick this month! 🤘

I originally read this as monthly single issues as it was released and trust me when I tell ya its a bonkers Batman story that effect the entire DC universe moving forward.

Eyelit Do you have to have any previous knowledge of Batman story lines to read this one? I think I‘ve read a few like forever ago, but nothing recently 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Eyelit From the writer: "You always try to take into consideration that there's going to be a good number of people who have never read the book before or read any DC comic before. When you get to Metal, the idea is that if you've read nothing else, you'll still be okay." 6y
See All 17 Comments
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Eyelit That said...it would certainly help? I'm not sure how someone that hasn't read any Batman in the past 5 years or so would fare. 6y
Eyelit Awesome - thanks!! I‘ve put it on hold at my library 😁 6y
Eyelit Do you have any recs of other Batman stories I can read in the meantime for prep? 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Eyelit If you decide to join in on this one I'd be more than happy to answer any questions as you read. 😁 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Eyelit yes. The New 52 Batman series by the same writer and author. 6y
DGRachel Not on Hoopla, but I‘m #7 on the library wait list for print. 🤞🏻 6y
Eyelit Cool - I‘ll check out the court of owls and following two vols. Thanks! 6y
mcipher Just put it on hold at library -hopefully the wait time won‘t be too long! 6y

InLibrisVeritas I haven't picked up a DC comic in such a long time! I'll have to see where I can get it 6y
rekahlee How did I not know about this until now?! I read the issues as they came out but it‘d be so fun to read them all together! 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @rekahlee that's exactly what I did! It was worth the re-visit and all at 'onceness' 6y
