Sex and the City and Us: How Four Single Women Changed the Way We Think, Live, and Love | Jennifer Keishin Armstrong
9 posts | 5 read | 24 to read
By the bestselling author of Seinfeldia, a fascinating retrospective of the iconic and award-winning television series, Sex and the City, to coincide with the shows twentieth anniversary. When Candace Bushnell started writing her Sex and the City column for the New York Observer, she didnt think anyone beyond the Upper East Side would care about her adventures among the Hamptons-hopping media elite. But her struggles with singlehood struck a chord, making her a citywideand soon nationwidesensation. Beverly Hills, 90210 creator Darren Star brought Bushnells vision to an even wider audience when he adapted the column for an HBO series. His four main characters: Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha, forever branded the actresses that took on the roles, redefined womens relationship to sex, and elevated the perception of singlehood. With their fashion-forward lifestyle, they launched a barrage of trends, from fabric flower accessories to Manolo Blahnik shoes to Cosmopolitan cocktails. Sex and the City and Us is the story of how a columnist, two gay menDarren Star and fellow executive producer Michael Patrick Kingand a writers room full of women used their own poignant, hilarious, and humiliating stories to launch a cultural phenomenon, pushing the boundaries of television and ignited a national conversation about single women and sex in the process. While the shows feminist merits continue to fuel debate, it taught viewersmale and female, gay and straightabout sex, and demonstrated that single women could support each other through lifes tribulations, even as men came and went. Featuring exclusive new interviews with the cast and writers, including star Sarah Jessica Parker, creator Darren Star, executive producer Michael Patrick King, and author Candace Bushnell, Sex and the City and Us brings us behind-the-scenes for a nostalgic look at a TV series that changed the way women everywhere see themselves.

I can‘t sleep. 😩 I‘ve given up. Do the dew.

But I did finish this audiobook reread, which was fantastic. SATC came on during my college years and was appointment television. (I‘m a Miranda.) It‘s good to hear the behind-the-scenes, often unsung history of the writers and producers. Definitely a must-read for series fans! 4⭐️🎧

Andrew65 Similar issue myself last night! Well done on another book finish. 👏👏👏 4y
Megabooks @Andrew65 I eventually fell asleep around 4 am and got a few hours. I‘m sorry you had that problem too! (edited) 4y

I really loved this book. If you love the writing of, costumes on, and cultural impact of the show, definitely pick this up. If you‘re looking for lots of interviews with the girls, you‘ll be disappointed. There are so many behind-the-scenes stories about iconic moments. The audiobook is great, but you‘ll miss out on the bonus pictures. 5⭐️

5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stars - I LOVED every single page in this book. If you are #SATC fan, interested in how iconic shows like this one get made, or even if you enjoyed the show half as much as I did—this is the book for you! 💗🍸Now all I want to do is rewatch the series! #jpbookreview #thegreeneyedreader

🗯 Which SATC character do you most relate to?🍸I think I am a mixture of Carrie and Miranda, but I always adored Charlotte and admired Samantha!

This was an #ARC
✅ Great research
✅ Doesn‘t assume you‘ve seen the show - plot points are described to make sure you understand
✅ Addresses weaknesses of the show along with how influential it was to the promotion of women and singles

Only reason I didn‘t give it five stars is because I didn‘t LOVE it. Can‘t put my finger on why...maybe because it‘s not the type of book you would re-read.

Christine11 I can‘t wait to read this one! 😊 (edited) 6y
keys_on_fire @Christine11 It‘s great! I will probably buy the print version when it comes out. Such an easy read, and it made me want to watch the show again to see the things that were talked about. 😊😊 6y
Christine11 @keys_on_fire I‘m glad you enjoyed it! I‘m definitely going to have to buy it as soon as it‘s out! 😊 6y
