The Engagement
The Engagement: A Novel | Chloe Hooper
7 posts | 4 read
From the author of the highly acclaimed A Childs Book of True Crime, a brilliant, seductive, and unnerving first novel of sexual betrayal (O, The Oprah Magazine), comes a dazzling, intense, and erotic second novel set in an isolated mansion in the country. Liese Campbell has an engagement for the weekend: to stay with Alexander Colquhoun, the handsome, well-mannered heir of an Australian pastoral dynasty, at his country seat some hours from Melbourne. Liese is English. Shes come to Australia to work at her uncles real-estate business and pay off her debts. Alexander has been looking for a place in the city. The luxury apartments Liese shows him have become sets for a relationship that satisfies their fantasiesand her financial problems. Both players understand the rules. Or so she thinks. Across the ancient landscape they drive at dusk to his grand decaying mansion. Here Liese senses a change in Alexander and realizes that a different game has begun. Chloe Hoopers riveting and provocative new novel is a psychological thriller for the modern age, an exploration of the snares of money and love and the dark side of erotic imagination. A trap has been set, but how and why? And for whom?

I had high hopes for this one when I started out. The writing is mysterious and will keep the reader engrossed. Hooper knows how to set a mood in the story that evokes a certain eroticism mixed with fear. The descriptions of nature and the habits of animals and them becoming prey and subsequently meals add to the gothic horror feeling. But Hooper lets her work down tremendously in part 3 with an ending that makes no sense. Terribly disappointing!

A psychological thriller that if it hadn‘t have been well written would have been a dud. It certainly kept me wondering but in the end it seems it was a game and unfortunately the woman was the one being played with. It was definitely a story I hadn‘t heard before. ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌛from me.

Jbakesmcgee3 Here is the excerpt he highlighted: ‘We are going to be the best of friends,‘ said Gilbert, ju- bilantly. ‘We were born to be good friends, Anne. You‘ve thwarted destiny enough. I know we can help each other in many ways. You are going to keep up your studies, aren‘t you? So am I. Come, I‘m going to walk home with you.‘ 9mo

Here‘s the second sign I made! Everyone at the engagement party will sign it with love. ♥️

julesG Is it still wedding season in your part of the world, or do you do this professionally? 13mo
Clwojick @julesG wedding season is normally may to September. And I was thinking about doing it professionally, but I need some practice first, so I‘m helping to plan for our friends party. 13mo
julesG You should really consider doing it professionally. What I've seen so far is very good. 13mo
Clwojick @julesG Thanks! 😻 13mo

I spent the evening listening to my audiobook, and doing some crafting for our friends engagement party. Here‘s one of the canvases I made tonight. I love my cricut! It made this so easy to DIY!

My first non-book related post is one of my engagement pictures that I just got. I don‘t usually read or like romances, but getting these pictures made me feel so lovey-dovey that I may just start one. Sorry for the shameless engagement photo, but I do love this one of us so wanted to share. 😬😉😘

This weekend was crazy and I literally got no reading done. However it was because I threw an Up themed going away party for my best friend AND she ended up surprising all of us at it because she announced her engagement! I am so happy for her so it was worth getting behind in my reading for the month. #bestfriends #noreadingweekend #surpriseengagement
