#tob crew, I am ambling through the current and former brackets and need help understanding the zombie picks 😫
How are these chosen? I see it is a poll… does everyone who participates in the poll pick their favorite from among the shortlist, and the two with the highest votes that were also eliminated in previous rounds make a comeback in the quarterfinals?
I don‘t remember those who tob, so consider yourself tagged if you like, and thanks!

BkClubCare Hello! @ruthiella is more an expert than I but will attempt to answer: The zombies are a poll and offered very early in the process. Yes, it does seem like a popularity poll. I rarely have enough read to make even an educated guess so I have been known to skip it, sadly. Many try to consider that”best” or favorite that might get not do well in the bracket. Ah! It is all gambling! Anything can happen. So, as a book fails to advance its _ 2/3 (edited) 1y
BkClubCare _ its bracket, they consider the highest zombie vote getter that could still end up for the zombie rounds. Ask away, if this doesn‘t make sense. I voted for Tomorrow as my zombie this year; I didn‘t vote last year. 1y
Ruthiella You got it @BkClubCare ! I‘m no expert. 😅It usually is a popularity contest in that the zombie poll is so early and I can‘t imagine anyone having read all the shortlist by then. I voted for Mouth to Mouth only because so many on Litsy really liked it. I hadn‘t yet read it. 1y

BkClubCare @Ruthiella - thx for chiming in! AND… I always tell everyone that the whole point of the TOB absolutely is the ridiculousness of attempting to “March Madness” books in a play off!!! It probably most-decidedly shouldn‘t be taken seriously and is all a nutty time to have amazing book discussion. Do not get seduced by any book being better than another. It is the fun of the digging, the analyzing, the thing you hadn‘t thought of. 1y
Larkken @BkClubCare @Ruthiella excellent. Thanks!! That does make sense - it‘s a way for folks to give another shot to the book they are secretly rooting for! Ha, love it. It means I can use it in my own bracket as a “second chance” for my own faves 😉 since my own bracket is all for fun anyway (edited) 1y
Larkken I agree entirely @BkClubCare - I‘ll never be able to keep up with the current tob list, but I love getting the opportunity to compare each book as I read it with everyone else‘s thoughts, even if I read them way after the competition! I was ready to discount Mouth to Mouth as fine but maybe a bit meh but others‘ comments really made me look at the narrative structure in a new way and one which brought more to my analysis of the story 👍🏻 1y
BkClubCare @Larkken - I find it to be one of the best lit discussion corners of the universe. We will have to see what/how Discord/Disqus changes it, tho. Change is inevitable 1y

repost for @BarbaraBB

With the announcement of the #ToB23 shortlist, the zombie vote and the brackets already (!) it is time to think about our alternative tournament as well. We‘ll read the shortlisted books (or most of them) and vote among our group for the same brackets as the real ToB to come up with our own winner. Who wants to join? I am tagging Littens who participated in earlier editions but everyone is welcome to join!

BarbaraBB Thanks for sharing! 1y

Here‘s my #ToB22 #TBR revised for the shortlist. I‘ll probably still read more of the longlist, but these are moving to the front burner.

JuniperWilde What is ToB22? Thx 2y
Ruthiella I‘m currently reading The Echo Wife then Copland Cane...gotta juggle those holds! 😬 2y

@Ruthiella Thanks for the heads-up for the Tournament of Books longlist! Here‘s my updated TBR from the list!!! I won‘t read them all (I‘ll wait for the short list). But, it‘s a great excuse to dive into these!!! #ToB22

https://themorningnews.org/article/the-year-in-fiction-2021

Suet624 So many great choices this year. 2y
Ruthiella Love it! I will definitely read the Laura Lippmann was even if it doesn‘t make the shortlist. 2y
BkClubCare I somehow, in my search for library availability, managed to get 3 books to hit TODAY. I am overwhelmed!! But decided to commit and am almost 20% in on The Promise. 2y
BarbaraBB Love this too! And like @Ruthiella I‘m definitely going to read the Lippmann. 2y
Well-ReadNeck @BkClubCare Me, too! Just picked up three today!!! Beginning with 2y

I've been a big #TOB fan for a while. Maybe not 16 years, but close. So I am pretty excited about the #SuperRooster which starts Wed. I've read 12/16 of the #TOB winners. I really, really, really love 3 of them, and kind of love a couple more. I have no idea what book will win! My early prediction is Cloud Atlas or Oscar Wao. My heart is rooting for The Accidental or Goon Squad. I'm hoping it's not Wolf Hall.
Regardless, it will be fun to follow!

Ruthiella I‘m also looking forward to the ultimate rooster showdown! 🐓 I only started following it in 2013. 4y
BarbaraBB Me too! It‘s the best in choosing books I‘d never would have considered otherwise. 4y
BarbaraBB Based on the brackets I think Cloud Atlas can be in the finals against The Underground Railroad. There are 3 I haven‘t read! 4y
See All 14 Comments
BarbaraBB Also, did I miss voting for the zombies or couldn‘t we vote? 4y
merelybookish @Ruthiella I'm started the year Wolf Hall won. Not sure what year that was. 4y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Oh, that's a good guess for final two! I don't know if there are was a zombie vote. If there was, I obviously missed it. 😄 I might try to read Morrison's A Mercy since it's short and Im happy to read her. But otherwise am okay not reading the others (which I don't think will win eg. The Sellout). 4y
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB @merelybookish There‘s no zombie vote for the Super Rooster. Instead, the books will be pitted in the zombie round against the book they won against originally in the finals. So, for example, The Underground Railroads would be up against Homegoing. 4y
BarbaraBB I haven‘t read A Mercy either 4y
merelybookish @Ruthiella Wow! So a book that isn't even in the initial tournament could win it all! Now that would be an upset. 🧟 4y
Ruthiella @merelybookish I KNOW! I love it when there‘s an upset! 🧟‍♀️ 🐓❤️ 4y
merelybookish @Ruthiella Jonathan Franzen's Freedom better not come back and win it all!! 😳 4y
Ruthiella @merelybookish As we both know, anything can happen in the TOB. It‘s a blood sport! 🤪 4y
merelybookish @Ruthiella I will still be pissed! 🤣 But I don't think Franzen is viewed as quite the wunderkind he was 10ish years ago. 4y
Ruthiella @merelybookish Nah, he doesn‘t have a chance. 4y

For the first time ever, I filled out the brackets. I don't think Normal People will actually win, but I *want* it to. 🙂
Hoping to see The Testaments go down in 🔥🔥🔥 tomorrow!
#tob #tob20

Cathythoughts I‘m with you on both counts 👍🏻❤️❤️❤️ 4y
BarbaraBB I‘m with you on The Testaments. I filled the brackets in too and think Girl Woman Other will win - even though it‘s not my favorite. Fortunately the judges are always unpredictable 😀💕 4y
merelybookish @Cathythoughts You have excellent taste! 😉 4y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB I think GWO also has a good chance of winning it all. Not my favorite either but a winner I could respect. (As opposed to The Testaments...) 4y
BarbaraBB Indeed! 😘 4y

merelybookish Initial observation. A lot of short story collections! 4y
mklong I am looking forward to spending some time with the list tonight. There are several on that are new to me, and while I love rooting for my favorites, it‘s finding those new gems that is my favorite part of this comp. (edited) 4y
See All 27 Comments
merelybookish @mklong Agreed! And as usual I haven't read that many on the list! 4y
Cinfhen Waiting to hear what @BarbaraBB thinks!!! Lots of short stories and a few NEVER heard of titles. Happy to see 4y
BarbaraBB I‘ve only read three any have another four on my shelves! Of many I‘ve never even heard. And many short stories indeed. But I‘ve already noticed some I am going to stack! Love it! 4y
Ruthiella I‘ve only read 5 of the 60+. I just put Ducks, Newburyport on hold at the library. I have a feeling it will make the shortlist plus I am super curious about it myself!😀 4y
merelybookish @Cinfhen That's been on my TBR for a while! 4y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB I've read 8. And don't plan to read The Testaments or the Marlon James. But that leaves plenty of options! 4y
merelybookish @Ruthiella I ordered it from the library a while ago but was in no mood to tackle it once it showed up! 🤣 But I might give it another go, maybe over the Xmas holidays. I agree that it seems short-list material. 4y
BarbaraBB What do you think @Cinfhen ? (edited) 4y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish Eight, that‘s good! I am going to read the ones I own and then wait for the shortlist before buying any new books 😉 4y
Emilymdxn Im on 11 plus I‘m currently half way through listening to the water dancer! I‘d love to read all of them cause I love reading lists and comparing them with people but holy budget batman. Home remedies and we cast a shadow are on my library ebook service so I‘ll definitely be able to read those and should be able to track down a couple of others! 4y
merelybookish @Emilymdxn I think I can access most of them through the library but there's always a few obscure titles that are elusive. 4y
Emilymdxn @merelybookish because of my work hours I can almost never get to the library physically, I use library ebooks and audiobooks a lot but that limits my choice a lot more than reading paper books :( 4y
LauraJ That‘s a long list! I‘ve only read two so far. 4y
batsy Haha, well played! And thank you for sharing, going to peruse the list in detail 🧐 4y
Redwritinghood I can‘t believe it‘s out already! It seems like we just finished last year‘s. 4y
Cinfhen I‘ve read 12 @BarbaraBB @merelybookish of the 12 I‘d only like to see 3 continue On Earth, Girl/Woman and Childrens Archive. I own 5 more ( but not sure if I‘ll read MJ or Ducks yet) but will try to get to the other 3: Nickel Boys, Trust Exorcise, Golden State. There are a few I wanted to read regardless but I‘m not planning on buying books just from this long list. BTW: How gorgeous are those field notebooks featuring the National Parks?!?! 4y
BarbaraBB Wow, 12!! I was checking out the reviews of the books and had noticed how many you read but 12 is incredible! On Earth and the Children are faves of mine too. I have a copy of girl/woman and am looking forward to it. I am looking forward to True Exercise and Golden State too, among others. I have stacked many more but am trying to buy no more books this year 🙀 @Cinfhen (edited) 4y
batsy So that list is really interesting. I've read one so far 🤣 I'm worried about all of us who haven't read Ducks... How will we have time for the rest of the books 😅🦆 4y
Zelma I haven‘t read any of them yet, but that‘s not unusual. I love the ToB even when I haven‘t read anything on it. I am just here for the commentary. 🥰 4y
Zelma Slightly disappointed The Testments is on the list but not surprised. I like seeing more obscure titles so I hope it stays off the short list. 4y
merelybookish @Cinfhen That is impressive and makes me want to read Girl, Woman, Other even more. (As opposed to The Testaments..😒) And yes, those field notes are goegeous! 4y
merelybookish @batsy Ducks is a beast! But I'm trapped errr staying with family on a remote island over Xmas. A gigantic book might fit the bill! 4y
merelybookish @Zelma I agree! The commentaries are so nuanced that you don't need to have read the books to appreciate the conversation. 4y
thebluestocking I‘ve read 5, which is more than usual, and am almost done with Fleishman and just started Girl Woman Other. Lots I have never heard of, but I‘m optimistic about the short list. 💙 4y

BkClubCare So, do we know when Super Rooster is going to be? 4y
thebluestocking I cannot wait!!!! 💙💙 4y
merelybookish @BkClubCare I don't know! What is the super rooster? 4y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Thank you! I couldn't remember all the #tobers on her. 4y
merelybookish @Emilymdxn Yes,.it's always a great list of popular, obscure, and in-between! 4y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish the Super Rooster is a bonus ToB composed of all 16 previous winners. It will take place after the regular ToB I read somewhere @BkClubCare 💕 4y
Reggie Me too!!!! 4y
Zelma I can‘t wait for Super Rooster! 😃😍 4y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB @zelma Wow! That is exciting!! (Early prediction. Cloud Atlas wins it all! 😉) 4y
BarbaraBB That‘s quite a prediction! I have to check out who those 16 were!! But I did love Cloud Atlas 😀 4y
Zelma @merelybookish @BarbaraBB I think I am going with a sleeper. Fever Dream to won and shocks everyone. 4y
BkClubCare @merelybookish - I have 3 yet to read (and revisit a few that I DNF‘d) for #SuperRooster. I have no predictions but I will be such fun! I think my favorite is The Good Lord Bird but I have many favorites. Might have to reread Cloud Atlas. 4y

The Morning News released the long list for the 2019 Tournament of Books today! The field has been narrowed 76 books, which will further be narrowed to the final 16. I‘m still working through the list. I‘ve read a handful at least! #tob #therooster #tob2019

merelybookish I've read 6. 😯 Lots left to tackle! 5y
thebluestocking @merelybookish I think my total is just five. But every time I try to read off of the long list, I choose wrong! (edited) 5y
