Bella Winter is a young single mother with a scarred face in this haunting retelling of the Grimm‘s fairytale. Really good. Look forward to reading more Comyns in the future.

Mehso-so

Bella, overcoming various obstacles, has finally built a stable, quiet, happy life for herself and her daughter. Enter a rich couple that befriends her and after tragedy, life goes off the rails.

I‘m torn. I really enjoyed the first half but as more conflict was introduced, the main character‘s behavior became implausible. Since it‘s a retelling of the Grimm brothers fairytale by the same name, I feel Comyns tried to force this one. #nyrb

I wanted to love this, but it didn‘t quite do it for me. I thought it worked as a modern retelling of the Juniper Tree, and I liked the distanced voice of the narrator (gave it a very fairy tale feel), but there was too much to sift through to get to the climax and it lost a bit of its cohesion at the end.

So I'm getting in on the #BookSpin action! Here's my list for March. My first list had the tagged book on it but I wanted to get a book in by the end of Feb so I had my husband do my own "spin." A new book added and here's March. @TheAromaofBooks

Also, because I'm a nerd ? I broke down my selection stats: 4 #classics , 4 #Europaeditions 3 #NYRB , 3 #nonfiction , 3 #shortstories and 1 #southernlit .

TheAromaofBooks Great list!! And I like the way you broke it down lol 4y

@MicrobeMom Thank you so, so, SO much for my #HappilyEverAfterSwap package. I love everything! I have never heard of The Juniper Tree and The Robber Bride has been on my wish list foreverrrr! Ironically, I received Hazel Wood in a package last fall, but I took it to my high school where it promptly “grew legs” and walked away!!! I‘m so glad to have another copy that I can get to read! 😂

Readergrrl @microbemom I‘ve just started bullet journaling too so that, the Kisses, and the socks really rounded the whole package out! Thank you very much!! 5y

Readergrrl @microbemom and I‘ve finally come to the conclusion that if one of my books makes someone so happy that it “walks away” with them, then that makes me happy too!! 5y

melissajayne The Robber Bride was my first Margaret Atwood book that I read. Read it when I was 15/16. 5y
Readergrrl @microbemom And this notecards are lovely! The embossed art reminds me of the purple Jacaranda trees near where my grandmother lived in Florida. Beautiful! 5y
BookishTrish I got The Robber Bride too!!! 5y
Chrissyreadit The Juniper Tree sounds foreboding. I can‘t wait to hear about it. 5y
MicrobeMom Yay! I am glad you enjoyed it. I hope the books are good! 5y
Readergrrl @MicrobeMom I really do! I wore the socks to work today and showed them off to my seniors who promptly reminded me that I am officially the biggest book nerd they‘ve ever known. Tomorrow is my stay at home and read day, so I‘m quite excited! Thanks again!!! 5y

Pickpick

My first Comyns. Her writing is beautiful and haunting. Hard to describe. Bella is a single mom And finds a job in an antique shop, her life becomes intertwined with a couple that comes into the shop. She and her daughter spend more and more time with them with many unintended consequences. Filled with troubled characters, and some deep friendships, it also had a magical quality. #fairytaleretelling #booked2019

Blaire I normally dislike fairy tale retellings. This one worked for me. I think it helped that I wasn‘t familiar with the fairy tale. I Wikipediad the gruesome original part way through this book. 5y
Cinfhen Never heard of this fairytale either! Cool cover and great choice🧚🏼‍♂️🧚🏻‍♀️🧚🏼‍♂️ 5y

It‘s Sunday morning and I am miraculously the only one awake. Time to make the coffee and perhaps start this #fairytaleretelling. It‘s either this one or sweetness at the bottom of the pie this morning - to be determined by mood.

Jee_HookedOnBookz I love fairytale retellings! Would love to know what you thought of this! 5y
Tamra This one sounds good! 5y
Leftcoastzen I love reading when everyone else is still snoozing. That is the sweetness at the bottom of the the pie! 5y

Just started this beauty. Loved Comyns‘ “The Vet‘s Daughter” when I read it years ago.

Heard about this one on the All the Books podcast and thought of you @Victoria_Clyne

Victoria_Clyne @Joanne1 what made you think of me? 6y
Joanne1 It's kind of a retelling of a Grimm's fairytale. For some reason that made me think you'd be into it. 6y
