The Captives: A Novel | Debra Jo Immergut

The riveting story of a woman convicted of a brutal crime, the prison psychologist who recognizes her as his high-school crushand the charged reunion that sets off an astonishing chain of events with dangerous consequences for both As an inmate psychologist at a state prison, Frank Lundquist has had his fair share of surprises. But nothing could possibly prepare him for the day in which his high school object of desire, Miranda Greene, walks into his office for an appointment. Still reeling from the scandal that cost him his Manhattan private practice and landed him in his unglamorous job at Milford Basin Correctional Facility in the first place, Frank knows he has an ethical duty to reassign Mirandas case. But Miranda is just as beguiling as ever, and hes insatiably curious: how did a beautiful high school sprinter and the promising daughter of a congressman end up incarcerated for a shocking crime? Even more compelling: though Frank remembers every word Miranda ever spoke to him, she gives no indication of having any idea who he is. Inside the prison walls, Miranda is desperate and despairing, haunted by memories of a childhood tragedy, grappling with a family legacy of dodgy moral and political choices, and still trying to unwind the disastrous love that led to her downfall. And yet she is also grittily determined to retain some control over her fate. Frank quickly becomes a potent hope for her absolutionand maybe even her escape. Propulsive and psychologically astute, The Captives is an intimate and gripping meditation on freedom and risk, male and female power, and the urges toward both corruption and redemption that dwell in us all.

Got some pickups from the library ❣️ I decided that I should try and pair fast paced books with the nonfiction to help me work through both simultaneously. I'll see how it goes 😅 I think it's going to be tough for me to put down the quick reads and be more deliberate about getting through the nonfiction. Wish me luck! 😂

I found it really interesting that the paperback and the kindle version of this book have different covers. I'm used to seeing it in various editions. Too bad this wouldn't count for the changing cover in the middle of the series for #MiddleGradeMadeEasy lol. #BBRC @LibrarianRyan

LibrarianRyan I‘ve been slowly making a list of books with cover changes in the middle of the series. I‘m at 34 and some of them I barely remember. 5mo

Another dud. It sounds good, but the chemistry between characters is not there for the premise of the book.

Pickpick

I found the book enjoyable overall, despite my frustration with Frank through most of the second half. It's an interesting meditation on obsession, freedom, and choice.

Una storia che scorre veloce e che cattura, nonostante non sia propriamente il thriller che mi ero immaginata dalla trama.
Ve ne parlo sul blog, ma:
a voi incuriosisce? 😉

This book was not for me. I didn‘t even want to finish it. I liked the writing style but the story was so drawn out. I couldn‘t tell where it was going and it took forever to get to the point. Maybe it‘s just me, but I just wasn‘t feeling it.

Was hoping for a more modern Alias Grace kinda vibe but 😕.

I went to B&N for the first time in a LONG time and I saw some books that sounded interesting. I wanted to share them and see if anyone has read these or heard of them.
