The Lakotas and the Black Hills
The Lakotas and the Black Hills: The Struggle for Sacred Ground | Jeffrey Ostler
5 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
The story of the Lakota Sioux's loss of their spiritual homelands and their remarkable legal battle to regain it The Lakota Indians counted among their number some of the most famous Native Americans, including Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. Their homeland was in the magnificent Black Hills in South Dakota, where they found plentiful game and held religious ceremonies at charged locations like Devil's Tower. Bullied by settlers and the U. S. Army, they refused to relinquish the land without a fight, most famously bringing down Custer at Little Bighorn. In 1873, though, on the brink of starvation, the Lakotas surrendered the Hills. But the story does not end there. Over the next hundred years, the Lakotas waged a remarkable campaign to recover the Black Hills, this time using the weapons of the law. In The Lakotas and the Black Hills, the latest addition to the Penguin Library of American Indian History, Jeffrey Ostler moves with ease from battlefields to reservations to the Supreme Court, capturing the enduring spiritual strength that bore the Lakotas through the worst times and kept alive the dream of reclaiming their cherished homeland.

Well it took me until the last ten minutes of the #BigGame to get in bed with my book...busy putting the hyped up minis to bed and then microwaving some truffle mac n cheese for dinner. My knee hurts, so I deserve bed and poptarts! #LitsyPartyOfOne

JazzFeathers This book looks interesting. Is it good? 5y
mrsmarch @JazzFeathers It is SO good. I do caution that if you don‘t have a very light familiarity with the geography of the Dakotas/Wyoming/Montana and some basic players (Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse), it‘s going to be a lot to adjust to. 5y

4. Thickly overcast, slightly humid, comfortably warm, with a cool breeze, summer afternoon. Or a cooling summer evening on the porch under a lightbulb.
5. I started the tagged book last night and though I‘m only 46 pages in, it has been one of the most beautiful nonfiction reads I‘ve encountered in a long time. So many childhood memories.

Do you think litsy would be a good place for an “unswap” if I had book lists for schools on the reservation? People could send books directly to the source and share the book sent? Source for info on Rez is in link. I have volunteered there in past. Would this be ok as an event? https://www.re-member.org/pine-ridge-reservation.aspx

MallenNC I would absolutely be interested in doing this. 6y
Captivatedbybooks I like this idea 6y
BibliophileMomma Sounds like a good idea! 6y

cathysaid I would be interested as well. You said you volunteered there? So you feel confident that the books truly stay there (aren't sold to make money) and are used by the kids? If so, I think the Litsy community would rock this Unswap! 6y
Cinfhen I‘d be happy to participate 6y
Betty Good question @cathysaid 6y
CrowCAH Sounds like a good cause; go ahead and coordinate the event! 6y
Readergrrl I would be interested in joining too!! 6y
Chrissyreadit @cathysaid yes- I am confident if I work directly through the schools and Re-Member it will go directly into the hands of the children and adults living on the Reservation. Re-Member is an amazing organization that works with members of the tribe to support the tribe. (edited) 6y
Chrissyreadit Yay! I will make phone calls this week! I may need advice on how to post and share from more experienced Littens. 6y
cathysaid @Betty It's a sad reality, but here in ATL, sometimes the parents will take the book a kid gets through a charitable program and sell it. But when you need to feed a hungry family, it's hard to judge. Now if we donate, we make sure they are less popular books that are less likely to be sold. 6y
cathysaid @Chrissyreadit Sounds great! Thanks for the explanation and reassurance. I look forward it. 6y
Betty @Chrissyreadit check to see if we can mail books there and not necessarily order via their Amazon link 6y
Chrissyreadit @Betty I am thinking to contact the schools directly for booklists and using them to get into the hands of students. I am going to ask ReMember to distribute to adults if anyone would like to send for them and for infants and toddlers through the visiting nurse. Also I am hoping to form a reciprocal relationship with a teacher getting on Litsy and sharing books reflecting their history and culture and authors. 6y
JoeStalksBeck Sure! 6y
MrBook Ooh, that's interesting. Go for it! 😁👏🏻 6y
LeahBergen This sounds like a great idea! 👏🏻👏🏻 6y
Chrissyreadit @Tiffy_Reads @Cinfhen @CrowCAH @JoeStalksBeck @MrBook @LeahBergen or anyone with swap experience- would anyone be willing to email with me and answer questions? I have all the info and a rep from ReMember has joined litsy to share books from Native sources/perspective. I want to make sure I set up and link effectively. Pretty please? 6y
LeahBergen I don‘t really have swap experience but @MrBook @JoeStalksBeck and @Tiffy_Reads are awesome at this sort of thing (and reaching a big number of Litsy followers, too). 6y
Cinfhen Same! I‘ve never hosted a swap & my computer skills are lacking😩I think @LeahBergen has given u some solid leads...you could ask @Avanders too!!! 6y
IamIamIam This is a wonderful idea!!! I tagged @LitsyHappenings as well so you can have it blasted out there! 6y
Chrissyreadit @IamIamIam Thank you!!!! 6y
teebe It‘s a good idea but I have some questions: How involved are the Oglala in Re-Member? Particularly, is the Tribal Council involved? And is the organization at all religious, because I noticed quite a few churches seem to be volunteering through them? 6y
Avanders 🤗🤗 6y
Chrissyreadit @Re-memberProgramManager is new to Litsy and may have more info. When I volunteered the members of the Rez were very involved, teaching us, having dinner with us and one night selling crafts. I know it is meant to be a partnership. While churches go to do work, there was no indication of proselytizing while I was there. Does that help at all? @teebe (edited) 6y
teebe Thanks for the reply. Maybe @Re-memberProgramManager will have more info on this but I mean involved operationally. Does the organization employ people from the Rez? Does Tribal Council have a say in the organization? (e.g., it‘d make sense for an organization operating on rez to have a board member from Tribal Council). I ask because I grew up on-rez and an organization that operates on any reserve w.o that level of cooperation is extremely odd. 6y
teebe @Chrissyreadit @Re-memberProgramManager and I‘d be uncomfortable donating to any third-party organization that doesn‘t have that level of involvement from community or leadership. (edited) 6y
Chrissyreadit @teebe I will try to reach Olivia today so she responds. In my involvement it was a partnership, and meant to develop a mutual relationship. There were very few paid positions but at the time they were members of the Reservation. The main goal stressed to outsides is that placement of the Reservation was purposeful by the US govt. to create an unsustainable community. I know there were leaders who were not always working to benefit the reservation 6y
Chrissyreadit @teebe as well as leaders who put everything into the reservation. I appreciate your caution because corruption has historically been rampant. I can only tell you I want to get Books into the hand of Kids, teens and adults, and I witnessed first hand that this organization works to distribute help, resources and supports with respect and care for the well being of many. You may have a lot of input I would benefit from on how to support this 6y
Chrissyreadit @teebe endeavor- and I would greatly appreciate it, as well as your diligence to ensure the members of the reservation are benefitting. Thank you for that! 6y

Oops. I did me a shop. The top one is for me, the middle one is for my dad for Christmas, and the bottom one is for my #secretsantagoespostal #wintersolsticebookexchange. I didn‘t expect I‘d find one of the books I was looking for at a discount book place in an outlet mall!
