Casualty of War: A Bess Crawford Mystery
Casualty of War: A Bess Crawford Mystery | Charles Todd
10 posts | 9 read | 17 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Charles Todd comes a haunting tale that explores the impact of World War I on all who witnessed it--officers, soldiers, doctors, and battlefield nurses like Bess Crawford.Though the Great War is nearing its end, the fighting rages on. While waiting for transport back to her post, Bess Crawford meets Captain Alan Travis from the island of Barbados. Later, when he's brought into her forward aid station disoriented from a head wound, Bess is alarmed that he believes his distant English cousin, Lieutenant James Travis, shot him. Then the Captain is brought back to the aid station with a more severe wound, once more angrily denouncing the Lieutenant as a killer. But when it appears that James Travis couldn't have shot him, the Captain's sanity is questioned. Still, Bess wonders how such an experienced officer could be so wrong. On leave in England, Bess finds the Captain strapped to his bed in a clinic for brain injuries. Horrified by his condition, Bess and Sergeant Major Simon Brandon travel to James Travis's home in Suffolk, to learn more about the baffling relationship between these two cousins. Her search will lead this smart, capable, and compassionate young woman into unexpected danger, and bring her face to face with the visible and invisible wounds of war that not even the much-longed for peace can heal.

I'm all caught up now with the Bess Crawford mysteries. This one is a strong addition, despite the lack of wartime nursing description. In fact, the war is over for most of the book, and Bess is on leave in England. Of course she feels it her duty to resolve a mystery for a former patient, and prove that he is not mad. There are also some tantalizing glimpses of what may be in store for Bess now that the Great War is over.

I'm now caught up with Bess Crawford. The series revolves around the fact that Bess is a nurse during WWI, many of her "cases" she takes on are of mysteries surrounding soldiers and their families. Now with WWI drawing to a close, I'm left wondering how it all will go next. Will she continue nursing? What about Simon? Will we still get to hear the Kookabura call from my favorite Aussie? It's definitely a precipice time for the series to be sure.

I‘m a big fan of Bess Crawford and am a bit concerned about her in a post-war world. This was a delight as usual and definitely made me realize how much I was shipping a particular pairing.

Library Haul ... lovely books. Not sure I can get these done in 2 weeks

Sace Oooo. They were just talking about the Comfort Food Diaries on one of the Book Riot podcasts. I want to read that one. 7y
Bookquilter @RestlessFickleBookSlut I am almost sure that podcast is how it ended up on my hold list at the library. Podcasts and Litsy are dangerous to my TBR list. 7y

#TBRtemptation post 3! Released soon. This is the 9th installment in the Bess Crawford series. WWI is coming to a close. Bess meets Capt. Alan Travis who comes to her first aid station with a head wound. He blames his cousin for it. He returns to the station again later even worse off, adamantly blaming his cousin. Bess & a sgt. major head to the cousin's home for answers. What they'll find will be heavy indeed. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Melissa_J I can't wait to read that one. Love the series! 7y
