I came to know of The Lady Chablis thanks to the southern scandel in Savannah, GA (‘Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil‘). In this memoir, I got to know her a little better. She had quite a life and was never afraid to live her truth.

Mama got the name Chablis off a wine bottle. She didn‘t think it up for me though. It was supposed to be for my sister. Mama got pregnant when I was sixteen, and she wanted a little girl. She was gonna name her La Quinta Chablis. But then she had a miscarriage, and I said, ‘Oooh Chablis. That‘s nice. I like that name.‘ And mama said, ‘Then take it, baby. Call yourself Chablis from now on.‘ So ever since then, I‘ve been Chablis.
Got the house clean yesterday and finished this before work today! After reading Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, I needed some more Lady Chablis. She “Pours the tea” and tells all about her eclectic life as a show girl and transie. She had quite the life! I loved that she added her vocab to the end, some southern recipes and a “phone book” of who‘s who.
This library book is an oldie!
#DancingQueen | The Lady Chablis didn‘t consider herself a drag queen, but more accurately, a transgendered night club star. She was best known for her role in John Berendt‘s book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and also played herself in the film. I haven‘t read this memoir yet, but I want to.

#Internationalwomensday I loved Lady Chablis from John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. "The Doll [me!] may be a heterosexual white Woman in mind, but her black body and soul belong to Miss Rosa Parks, Girl......"

I did a Goodreads search of the books I have read for "candy" for today's photo prompt. This is the book that came up. Ha! If you read In the Garden of Good and Evil she was a drag performer who was one of the very flamboyant people in it. After she became known through that book, she wrote a book of her own. I was surprised to see that she died of pneumonia this year at age 59. #candycanes #12DaysofXmasPhoto
