I savored each and every story in this anthology. I love speculation fiction, I'm super picky about sci-fi, I don't have much success with fantasy. But I can't think of a single story that didn't delight. All of them were fantastic and fierce. These stories are incredibly diverse in perspective, imagination, and style. Best of all, I ended up with a slew of new-to-me writers to keep an eye on! Don't miss out on this one. #ownvoices #translit #sff

Complex, diverse queer characters, dystopia, time travel, resistance. This novel was super disconcerting because you get social commentary as a natural part of the world-building (so many parallels!). This novel is transfeminist, intersectional, and anti-capitalist. It calls out TERFs, SWERFs, people who tokenize marginalized friends, and more. Lovely writing, quick pace, exciting storyline. A #selfpublished gem! #ownvoices #translit #transgender

Almost Perfect | Brian Katcher

Panpan

So many issues with this book. Transphobia, homophobia, fat-shaming... And that's just to start. I hated this one.
If you have time for it, I posted a longer, more detailed review here: https://bennilovesbooks.wordpress.com/2017/08/11/review-almost-perfect-by-brian-...
I recommend reading If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo instead. It handles this topic MUCH better.

Lily and Dunkin | Donna Gephart
Panpan

NOPE. Lily's transition centers cis feelings, and the author doesn't differentiate between gender expression and gender identity. Once Lily confides in Dunkin, his narrative (not dialogue, yet) should have changed. But he didn't refer to her as Lily until the END, when she shows up at the school dance in a dress, wearing makeup. This reinforces the harmful idea that you have to look a certain way before others will see you as "really truly trans."

lovelybookshelf I chose "pan" instead of "bail" because of the bipolar representation. Dunkin's story was moving, and I learned a lot. 2y
Bibliogeekery I really appreciate your review. I haven't read this one yet but it's definitely been on my list. #transbooks 2y
lovelybookshelf @Bibliogeekery I was super disappointed because I'd seen it on tons of #translit lists, and once in a while a cis author gets it right but sadly, not here. 😐 I'm going to write a fuller review on my blog soon. 2y

Peddler410 Thank you for your review. In Duncan‘s defense, it is Lily who tells him to use the name Tim. Maybe the author was wrong to write it that way? I‘m not sure. 14mo
lovelybookshelf @Peddler410 The narrative should have used Lily once Lily came out to Duncan. The dialogue is a different story, because Lily didn't want to be outed to others yet. But the way this (cis) author went about it felt wrong because she reinforces the idea that you have to appear a certain way before your transness is valid. 😞 This is an ongoing problem trans and nonbinary people face with cis people and it has very harmful repercussions. 14mo
Peddler410 Thanks @lovelybookshelf I understand the point you were making more clearly now. As a cis reader, I agree with what you are saying though I did not pick up on it as I was reading. Thank you for educating me, sincerely. 14mo
lovelybookshelf @Peddler410 you're very welcome! 💜 14mo

Long Black Veil | Jennifer Finney Boylan
Pickpick

I love how JFB tells a story, the way she allows it to unfold in its own time. LONG BLACK VEIL contains elements of a thriller, a mystery, a hint of paranormal, but is still a wonderfully character-driven piece of literary fiction. The theme of a trans person living in stealth was profound. I think those of us who are younger, who've always had online community, can't fully grasp how isolating this was. Great read. #ownvoices #translit

Reese_Pearly.Pages I'm reading an arc of this now. It's definitely a little spooky so far. 2y

I loved this book so much. It is a wonderful coming if age book. To witness Luna's transformation through Regan's eyes was both heartwarming and at times heartbreaking. We all need a sister like Regan. This gem is a solid 4 stars ⭐️⭐⭐⭐ 🏳️‍🌈#translit #transbooks

Bibliogeekery Loved it too! 😍 2y
Avidreader6 Such a great book. I remember reading it when I was a teenage and crying over Luna and how beautiful the writing was. 2y

Just heard Cat Fitzpatrick from Topside Press give the most amazing recommendation for this book at the #translit panel at #AWP17. From the back cover: "This is what happens when Aunt Jemima becomes Rambo."
