In the long, hot summer of 1989, Ben and Fab are best friends. Growing up in a small country town, they spend their days playing cricket, yabbying in local dams, wanting a pair of Nike Air Maxes and not talking about how Fab's dad hits him or how the sudden death of Ben's next-door neighbour unsettled him. Almost teenagers, they already know some things are better left unsaid. Then a newcomer arrived in the Wimmera. Fab reckoned he was a secret agent and he and Ben staked him out. Up close, the man's shoulders were wide and the veins in his arms stuck out, blue and green. His hands were enormous, red and knotty. He looked strong. Maybe even stronger than Fab's dad. Neither realised the shadow this man would cast over both their lives. Twenty years later, Fab is still stuck in town, going nowhere but hoping for somewhere better. Then a body is found in the river, and Fab can't ignore the past any more. WIMMERA is the 2016 Winner of the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger (UK).

A good read, but a disturbing subject. The friendship is brilliantly portrayed and you sort of know what‘s coming. The ending is sad and frustrating.
Thanks Carolyn 😘

CarolynM Glad you liked it. I agree with you about the end. I hated that I thought it was exactly what would have happened in the real world. 4y
BarbaraBB Sounds really interesting. I‘ve never heard of it somehow. 4y
Freespirit I haven't read this yet 4y
Suet624 @barbaraBb It‘s funny how many books there are that have won awards that I‘ve never heard of (edited) 4y

#weeklyforecast
As always, these are what I felt like today but who knows!
Starting tagged one this morning, hopefully get an hour or so before anyone else gets up 😁
Definitely in the need for some tales of gutsy women!
I have one more to read for #booked2019 but just don‘t fancy anything for it at the moment 🤷‍♀️

Cinfhen Which prompt is left??? 4y
erzascarletbookgasm My forecasts are like that too. I always have one or two impromptu reads slotted in! 4y
squirrelbrain Can we help with suggesting anything for your last prompt? This week looks good though.... 4y

TrishB @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain it‘s #pocmcparanormal I have a couple of suggested ones on the pile but they‘re just not calling me yet! Anyone feel free to offer anymore! 4y
TrishB @erzascarletbookgasm you have to allow a bit of flexibility 😁 4y
TrishB @Cinfhen in other news I am nearly there in top 10 of the decade! Might manage it before the next decade! 4y
squirrelbrain @TrishB - oof that‘s a difficult one! 🤷‍♀️ Probably not much I can help with there - I‘m not keen on paranormal.... 4y
Cinfhen Somebody recently posted their MCparanormal post and they loved their book...was it @gradcat ??? Did you check the hashtag, Trish??? You might scroll through and find a few suggestions 4y
Cinfhen Woohoo!!! I‘m looking forward to that DECADE LIST 4y
TrishB @Cinfhen just gone through hashtag and may go with this one ! The list is currently at 11.... 4y
Cinfhen It‘s good to have choices!!! Hopefully one sticks 🤞🏼🤞🏼 (edited) 4y
Cathythoughts Looking good 👍🏻❤️ 4y
Sace "...these are what I felt like today..." EXACTLY! That's my biggest challenge when planning my reading. What I feel like on Sunday could completely change in Monday. TBH it can change hourly! ? 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts 🤞🏻 I get some time! 4y
TrishB @Sace I hear you! I‘m already fancying something else 😁 4y
Sace And needless to say, spending time on Litsy does not help! 4y
MicheleinPhilly I LOVED Christodora. 4y
TrishB @Sace I set myself little targets- can‘t go back on Litsy until I‘ve read another 100 pages etc! 4y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly a great endorsement 👍🏻 4y
Sace Oh. That's brilliant. I may try to get myself into that habit as well! 4y
gradcat @Cinfhen & @TrishB I just finished the tagged book, which qualifies for POC Paranormal. I can‘t say it was my favorite book, but I think it‘s an important book from a first-time (pretty sure?) author. It‘s not bad, but it‘s not a nice book...there are very painful moments having to do with slavery and power struggles between classes. I tend to think it‘s almost necessary, definitely powerful...I hope that helps. ♥️ 4y
TrishB @gradcat I shall check it out 👍🏻😘 4y

Thank you Carolyn and Misty 😁😘 very kind of you and I look forward to reading both of these! Came yesterday but I only saw them when I got in late last night!
Carolyn - that picture in the card is amazing isn‘t it!?
Thanks again.

Cinfhen ❤️💕❤️💕 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m happy it made it!!! Enjoy ❤️❤️❤️ 5y
CarolynM I hope you enjoy the book. I think the photo is beautiful too, I always loved driving through that Forrest (it's not terribly far out of the city) but I haven't been there since the fires. I'm not sure what state it is in now. 5y

What a great read. I really enjoyed this one. I grew up not far from where this is set so the descriptions really brought home images of my childhood. Great characters and descriptions. Really looking forward to reading another Mark Brandi book.

Joanne1 You should try his second one. It‘s quite different. 4y

An easy, quick and engrossing read. Emotionally challenging though, due to the disturbing subject matter. Good debut #ozfiction #crimefiction

CarolynM I found the legal wash up the most emotionally challenging. I was quite cross with the book but it was really frustration because I think what happened was probably very realistic. 5y

An intriguing and unusual mystery centring on a #SmallTownBoy and his friend. #WanderingJune

BarbaraBB Sounds like a real good thriller! 5y
TrishB Stacked 👍🏻 with note to self that it has a different title here! 5y
CarolynM @TrishB I had thought you might like it. What is its UK title? 5y
See All 7 Comments
TrishB Into the River - do they think the original title is too Australian? 🤷‍♀️ 5y
CarolynM @TrishB I guess so, it's the name of a region in western Victoria so it conjures up a particular landscape and environment for Australians which it wouldn't for most other people. Into the River sort of fits, but it's a bit bland. 5y
gradcat I‘m stacking, too—it sounds really good—but does anyone know the US title? 😂 5y
Cinfhen I‘m intrigued too!!! 5y

Easy to read but not an easy read! I had worked out the plot but was not too sure how he would end it.
Great Aussie fiction. His description of the boys childhood took me back. Times of innocence and freedom.
@MrsMalaprop

Kaye Good review ! 5y
CarolynM I found myself getting really angry about the way they were dealt with by the law. It was probably fairly true to life, which makes me very sad. 5y

Should be tidying the house! 😊. But remembered the library was open! Top two books were on my list . Can‘t remember why I put them there. 🙃 . Both look like interesting reads. The other two were on the new books shelf and thought they looked interesting also. I love cats.😻. Anyone read any of these?

CarolynM I thought Wimmera was really good. Look forward to seeing your review🙂 5y

Atmospheric and intriguing mystery with strong central characters and an unexpected (at least by me) resolution.

A brilliant ominous and tragic story of a friendship between two young boys torn apart by a terrible secret. This gripped me from page 1 and if it wasn't for other life happenings I would have read it in a single sitting. A mystery more provocative and atmospheric than The Dry but with none of the hype. Highly, highly recommend!

CarolynM I wasn't sure whether to give this one a try but you've convinced me. Stacked. 6y
Joanne1 @CarolynM I should warn you it's pretty dark and there were one or two passages that were difficult to read. But most of the horrible stuff is implied rather than described. 6y
CarolynM Appreciate that, I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to the dark stuff. Still think I'll try it, though. 6y

Diving into this mystery set in the area I grew up in. I've heard great things so my expectations are high.... hopefully not too high.

#BooksAcrossOceans #day1 #AugustTBR I know I usually say "Uh Uh!" to tbr lists, but I'm running out of space in my TBR wall. That's 10 shelves. Double. Stacked.?I have to make plans to free up space or the hubby will finally catch on that I have way more books than I'm supposed to.These are at the top of my Must Read This Month pile.Although, I do have Bk2&3 of Ann Leckies series coming, plus all 3 bks in A Darker Shade Of Magic. And my Folios...

Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😱Time to devote more time to reading! 7y
