The Man Who Wouldn't Stand Up
The Man Who Wouldn't Stand Up | Jacob M. Appel
6 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
"Arnold Brinkmann is a timid, ultra-liberal botanist living in New York. He loves his plants, not his country. But when he accidentally insults the whole of America at a baseball game, he is drawn into an absurdist nightmare of press, preachers and pushy patriots. And it's only going to get worse if he won't apologise..."-- Page [4] of cover.

I love Jacob's short stories and finally read a novel of his! I enjoyed this book very much however the ending was left wide open and disappointing. The story is about a man who refused to stand up at a baseball game and got in trouble with the law because of it. From there his life just spiraled downward to where he was naked in NY covered with poo (don't ask!). I needed more answers for the ending. 3 stars.

Thanks to LibraryThing for this fun book. The MC refuses to stand as God Bless America is sung during the 7th inning stretch of a baseball game. His image is captured on a screen at the stadium and it proceeds to become a viral sensation. The response to his action is swift and true to life. The second half of the book goes off the rails a bit, but I enjoyed the humor and the questions the author asks you to consider.

BestDogDad I go to a lot of MLB games and it drives me nuts that fans are asked to stand for God Bless America on Sundays during the 7th inning. It‘s not the National Anthem. Leave the 7th inning stretch to Take Me out to the Ballgame . 5y
Suet624 @BestDogDad I know! That‘s what was so fun about the beginning of this book. This song isn‘t even the National Anthem and yet there‘s an expectation that it should be treated reverentially and patriotically. I actually like the song and I‘m happy it was written by a woman, but come on! And I prefer Sweet Caroline at my baseball stadium. 😂😂 5y
Aimeesue Sweet Caroline! Spoken like a true New Englander! 😄 5y
Suet624 @Aimeesue Yes indeed! I love my Boston sports teams. 😀 5y

I just received this, and am thrilled! Briefing through, it looks fantastic.....a man takes the son of his wife's sister to a baseball game. He decided to not stand for the National Anthem. He didn't realize he was being televised.
I love Appels storytelling, plot and pace.

JennyM Something along these lines has been playing out in the news over here in Australia. A little girl refused to stand for the national anthem at school, and was told she had to. This will be a fascinating read. Look forward to your review x 6y
