What the Best College Teachers Do
What the Best College Teachers Do | Ken Bain

Winner of the Virginia and Warren Stone Prize awarded annually by Harvard University Press for an outstanding book on education and society What makes a great teacher great? Who are the professors students remember long after graduation? This book, the conclusion of a fifteen-year study of nearly one hundred college teachers in a wide variety of fields and universities, offers valuable answers for all educators. The short answer isit's not what teachers do, it's what they understand. Lesson plans and lecture notes matter less than the special way teachers comprehend the subject and value human learning. Whether historians or physicists, in El Paso or St. Paul, the best teachers know their subjects inside and outbut they also know how to engage and challenge students and to provoke impassioned responses. Most of all, they believe two things fervently: that teaching matters and that students can learn.

“The most effective teachers help students keep the larger questions of the course constantly at the forefront. Donald Saari... invokes the principle of what he calls “WGAD”—“Who gives a damn?” ...He tells his students that they are free to ask him this question on any day during the course, at any moment in class. He will stop and explain... why the material... is important, and how it relates to the larger questions and issues of the course.”

Is there an app y'all recommend to catalog your books so that you can loan them out to friends and keep track of who has what?

Alright guys, tell me what course topics I should teach this fall! I just officially accepted a job as an assistant professor at the University of Virginia. I'm teaching freshman composition (which I love, weirdly enough). UVA's comp courses have fun topics like the one I taught two years ago, "Reading In A Digital Age," so I'm looking forward to creating some new courses this summer! But for now...celebrating. ❤️

BooksForEmpathy This is such fabulous news!! Congratulations!! I know nothing about teaching freshman composition, but I really hope you share what you come up with 😊. (edited) 7y

LectricSheep @BooksForEmpathy @Jas16 @saresmoore @mabell Thanks! I'm so glad to have an excuse to read even more! ?"it's for a course!" 7y
emtobiasz Congrats! My undergrad did something similar. My class was on the history of language, and I later TA'd a really great one about cities and urban development. 7y
LectricSheep @drokka I really enjoyed teaching it. It needs to be updated for the most recent developments-- it focused on the effect technology has on us as readers and writers. Clive Thompson was an important (and fun) source for the class, if you're interested! 7y
LectricSheep @emtobiasz Thanks! A course on the history of language sounds 🙌🏻! Especially if you could do something on emoji! I'm fascinated by the way emoji works. 7y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk My brother's favorite professor in film school taught a class called "Telling Stories in the Ruins of America". I always thought that was a cool class name. 7y
LectricSheep @TobeyTheScavengerMonk That is a totally awesome course name! Oh man. I'd love to find a way to use that. 👍🏻 7y

LauraBrook Congratulations! One of my fave college courses was books and movies. (Can't remember the name, sorry.) But we'd read the book over the weekend (ace homework!), discuss it in class on Monday, our "lab" on Wednesday was watching the movie adaptation, and then on Thursday we'd discuss the movie & how it compared to the book. It was great, and I found some of my fave books & movies through that class! Also: buy yourself some books as a present!?? 7y

UwannaPublishme How cool is that! Congrats! 🎉👏🏻 7y
Jinjer Awesome! Congrats! What are some of the other topics to choose from? 7y
LectricSheep @Jinjer Thanks! It's actually very flexible: I get to design my own courses. I just have to get them approved! I was just looking at one I designed (but never taught) called "God, Guts, and Glory: Christianity in the Hero's Quest," looking at Beowulf, the Inferno, Frankenstein, and 1984. But other people do classes on environmentalism, music-- anything goes. 7y
batsy Congratulations! 🎉 7y
