A Free Library in this City
A Free Library in this City: The Illustrated History of the San Francisco Public Library | Peter Booth Wiley
5 posts
"Whereas, We, the citizens of San Francisco ... do most heartily approve of the project about to be inaugurated for the establishment of A Free Library in this City, and do pledge to the same our hearty and united support." With these words, an idea was born in San Francisco, an idea that eventually - well over a century later - achieved its apotheosis in the building of the New Main Public Library. This state-of-the-art cultural institution now stands as a tribute to all those who had the vision to conceive the idea and the energy to nourish this - through eras of triumph and tragedy. With masterful insight, Peter Booth Wiley narrates the fascinating story of this idea, tracing the concept of the library back to the origins of writing and human history itself, through the ages of antiquity to the first American libraries and beyond ... to San Francisco. Embroidered into the thread of the main narrative are 25 specially commissioned essays from the Bay Area's leading literary figures, accompanied by original artwork by noted local illustrators.

Day 19 of #RiotGrams is #librarycards and I have quite a few. Super handy for getting ebooks and accessing electronic resources. Did you know that in #california, you can get a #librarycard for most any public library as long as you are a CA resident? Not pictured is my Beverly Hills library card.

Last night there was a post on the local town Facebook page. Someone had driven by and loaded all the books from their Little Free Library into their car. They even took her guest book, 😡😡 I immediately grabbed a box of books and drove over there. While I was there two more cars drove up with donations. We book people stick together! While I was there, her husband was installing a new security camera. Hard to believe someone would do this.

Dolly My guess is this person was a vandal not a reader. 😕 6y
Avanders Aww ☹️ But good on all of you for helping! 6y
Librarybelle How horrible! But, also how uplifting that you and several others were able to restock it! ❤️ 6y

Kaye Pretty sad that someone would do that. I highly doubt it was someone who wanted them to read. Probably more just to cause problems so others can‘t enjoy something they like. Out of the bad comes good when others are willing to refill it. 6y
xicanti What an awful person! I'm glad people like you stepped in to help. 6y
My_novel_obsession That‘s horrible! I will never understand some people. Awesome that you guys pitched in to restock!! ❤️ 6y
AmyG Some people are jerks. And then there‘s you...to save he day! 🙌🏻 6y
RebelReader Book people are the best people for sure! 😍❤️ 6y
Captivatedbybooks Smh i cant with this world anymore! 6y
Reviewsbylola Wowwwww! That‘s awful. 😢 6y
tammysue That‘s terrible.. but thank goodness book lovers such as you are stepping up! 😍 6y
laurenlovesliterature Monsters!!!! Why the hell would anyone do that?! That was really nice of you and some other neighbors to donate books though. 6y
Tamra You are a good bookish person. 😊 6y
tracey38 That's awful! I just don't understand some people. I'm so happy so many are good and came to replenish the books. 💜📚 6y
RebL That‘s pretty low. I worked at a used bookstore. Most people traded books in and out because they were huge readers. Sometimes people would get really steamed if we couldn‘t take their books. Usually it was because they were trying to pay the light bill. Does not justify theft, but maybe stirs compassion. 6y
TEArificbooks Yes, I have heard of people doing this to sell the books, but I have also heard of people that do this to give the books to nursing homes or read to their blind relatives. I hope the books were taken for a good cause. 6y

tracey38 @Suzze nice! About the theft? 6y
Suzze @tracey38 Yes! And about how many donations she has received. And the fact that there are now security cameras. 6y
tracey38 @Suzze good! It will be nice for people to hear the good of those who brought more donations after the negativity of the theft. 💜 6y
Nerdgirl_Ms_Sorrells craziness ! 6y
Mdargusch That‘s crazy! And sad! 6y
LibrarianRyan A few years ago there was a bunch of LL vandals. Some were burnt down, some graffitied, and demolished in other ways. It was so sad and bad. 6y
Suzze @LibrarianRyan That‘s awful! Senseless. Just mean. 😡😡 6y
