#Read2025 #MonthlyNonFiction

I‘m behind on reviews & discussion but I finished this for April‘s #Naturalitsy #BuddyRead I borrowed an ebook copy from the library & it‘s a quick & interesting book of essays about the Owens Valley & Mohave Desert in California. Written in 1903, it‘s wonderful nature writing & while my version may have suffered for lack of photos, the writing was descriptive enough to make me see it in my mind. While reading & ⬇️

DebinHawaii …stopping to Google more details, I found out/realized that From 1942 to 1945, during World War II, the first Japanese American Internment camp operated in the Owens valley at Manzanar. Maybe it‘s only interesting to me because I grew up reading & rereading the book tagged below but I like when I can tie books together. A enjoyable read overall, I would buy a print copy (hopefully with pictures) for my shelves. (edited) 4d

This week‘s joys are all from Malice Domestic 37.
1. Gigi Pandian was the toastmaster. She remembered me from last year, and we had a nice chat.
2. She‘s here being interviewed by next year‘s toastmaster, Ellen Byron. I got a free signed copy of the tagged book at the closing tea.
3. I reconnected with the team behind the website cozymystery.com who I met last year.
4. I registered for Malice Domestic 38. ⬇️

Susanita 5. I was able to spend time with my local friend Clair who‘s a book editor and knows some of the authors. 4d

julieclair Didn‘t get to this one this month, but want to. Too many books… too little time… 4d
TheBookHippie I learned a lot from this read and I had the photography book of this- HUGE BOOK - so you could read and almost jump in the picture. I did read it in bits and I think that‘s the best way. Librarian said it was dry but I didn‘t feel that way. I found it informative. 2d
TheBookHippie lol look at the questions - I always found desert BORING and now I can see beauty- like I said having the massive pictures made you live in the photo and is brilliant way of understanding the author. Does the author like people? Maybe not. I don‘t think it matters. 🙃 could be me reading in it‘s been a bit much here in life. 2d
AllDebooks @julieclair I hear you x 1d
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie I bet the photos made a huge difference. I agree with your librarian. I read it in one sitting and got a little bored. Would be a better read by dipping in and out. I loved the botanical sections. 1d
TheBookHippie @AllDebooks Oh for sure the dipping in and out. Some of the photographs are just amazing my grandson and I read through it over 4 weeks I don‘t think it‘s meant to be a sit and read book. Then I agree it‘s a bit no thx 1d

And again, today‘s trip is Hilo but with coworkers so the reading will only happen on the plane. Hoping to finish this one today for #Naturalitsy.

AllDebooks I loved it. 😍 7d

Glamorous Notions had some fascinating historical details, especially about the hidden recordings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima and the use of X-ray sheets for music. But overall, the plot didn‘t go anywhere and failed to keep me engaged. I found it more interesting in parts than as a whole.

This book got on my radar bc it was Amazon‘s book of the year. I think the story is award worthy but it wasn‘t as engaging as I‘d hoped. I wanted more about the players and less football play by play. It‘s still worth reading!

This was my #BookSpin for April

ImperfectCJ My spouse's cousin and her husband work at this school, and per them, the publicity seems to be a mixed bag. The interest in the team is awesome, but I get the impression that the cousin and husband would prefer if that translated to more awareness of the other challenges the school faces (which are similar to those faced by many schools---funding, staff/faculty burnout, under-involved parents---but dialed up given the student population). 2w
MallenNC @ImperfectCJ I‘m not surprised to hear that, unfortunately. Publicity can be a mixed bag even in the best of circumstances (I work in PR), and athletics often gets more funding while other needs are ignored. 2w

It‘s been a minute since I‘ve participated in #weekendreads but hoping to get back into it. Generally I‘m not a big non-fiction reader but both my weekend reads are. Still following the Babitz rabbit hole and a local interest title.

TheBookHippie I like this Babitz! 2w
mrp27 @TheBookHippie I recently finished Eve‘s Hollywood and I liked it. So far I‘m enjoying his one too. 2w
TheBookHippie @mrp27 I like both too. I do love all of her writing, some more than others. These two are in the top. 2w
