Sometimes at the lowest points in your life, fate will slip you a gift. Ken Follett meets Jodi Picoult in a stunning new novel from Jane Johnson. Kate Fordham, escaping terrible trauma, has fled to the beautiful sunlit city of Granada, the ancient capital of the Moors in Spain, where she is scraping by with an unfulfilling job in a busy bar. One day in the glorious gardens of the Alhambra, once home to Sultan Abu Abdullah Mohammed, also known as Boabdil, Kate finds a scrap of paper hidden in one of the ancient walls. Upon it, in strange symbols, has been inscribed a message from another age. It has lain undiscovered since before the Fall of Granada in 1492, when the city was surrendered to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Born of love, in a time of danger and desperation, the fragment will be the catalyst that changes Kate's life forever. An epic saga of romance and redemption, Court of Lions brings one of the great hinge-points in human history to life, telling the stories of a modern woman and the last Moorish sultan of Granada, as they both move towards their cataclysmic destinies.

4.5⭐ I'm giving an extra half star because of the setting of this book. The Alhambra sounds amazing, a place I'd love to see. The story of Kate who runs to Granada to escape cruelty. The story weaves between present and past, 1490s when the last of the Sultans reign in Granada. Recommend for the description of the beauty of that palace.

Next up! Not sure how quickly I'll get through this as I'm going away tomorrow, my daughters having surgery Monday. I'll be gone a few days. Of course I'll have my book and my kindle. Just don't know how much reading I'll get done.

Addison_Reads Safe travels and well wishes to your daughter for a quick recovery. 💚 5y

#backpackeurope travelogue *fictional*
Country 52: Spain! My first time here, I am spending most of my time in Granada, where I fully explored the Alahambra, a fortress/palace from 889 AD. *LANDMARK ALERT* It is so beautiful! I've wanted to go here since I read about it in A Little Life.
I quite liked this book, set past and present around the Alhambra. I preferred Kate's story to Blessings' story, but can understand why the latter was needed. 4/5

First page transported me right into the gardens of the Alhambra for #BackpackEurope
Meant to post this when I first read it, but life got in the way 🤗
This book was filled with so much beautiful imagery, I just wish I could have enjoyed it more this time around 😊

pinkpygmypuffs I went on a two week trip through Spain and Portugal with my students and the Alhambra was one of my favorite places! 6y

I feel like I'm rating this book too harshly because it just wasn't what I was in the mood for at the time. I did enjoy it, don't get me wrong; the imagery was beautiful and the story line was intriguing. I'll definately come back to it in the future. 💛

So after walking through the Alhambra, and travelling back in time with Blessings, it's time for a change of pace and some new scenery... 🧡

First #24in48 update: just a quick check in before I head for the bus. Just over 4 hours down so far 😊 thought I'd have got more reading in today but not a bad start. I'll be carrying on with Graceling on the bus which should help 😁 #24in48July2018 @24in48

This was a surprise hit for me. Alternating between past and present, we follow the story of two people living in Granada. Both aspects are heart wrenching. I think this is the first time I‘ve read a book from the perspective of those defeated by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.

Time for the final stretch today with this little monster purring next to me. Catlife is hard! 😹😻 I'm starting to get really annoyed by the contemporary chapters though; a shame because the historical storyline is really interesting. 😕

yvo_about_books @MrBook Lila says thanks! 😸 It's great having a reading buddy again since my other cat Jasmine is a true outside cat and almost never graces me with her presence (that's how she sees it; I'm mostly her personal food slave and nothing more). 😂 7y

Trying to catch the last daylight while eating a bowl of delicious granola with fruits, nuts and yogurt and continuing with Court Of Lions. Will be doing a reading marathon until I finish it because the ARC deadline is this Thursday! 😅 And yes our dog is still wearing the cone of shame...

Started a new ARC yesterday: an historical fiction story called Court Of Lions by Jane Johnson. Partly set in the present, partly in the 15th century and takes place in the wonderful Granada. Brings back great memories of that city! 😍 I was really enjoying it up until the adult content made its appearance... Fingers crossed this didn't set the tone for the rest of the story.

nickimags @yvo_about_books that would put me off too 😕 7y
yvo_about_books @nickimags the adult scene kind of came out of the blue, but so far luckily wasn't repeated... Fingers crossed it stays that way. 😉 7y
