The best kind of What the Fu**kery

Looking back on this it is a much deeper book than it appeared on first reading, there is a distinct feminist message along with a cast of fully diverse characters including representatives with physical and psychology conditions who tend to be under represented in fiction.

If there was a twist it was so clearly sign posted it didn‘t work for me. When the characters finally got to the revelation I was like hallelujah.

Gay couple & their adopted daughter are enjoying a holiday in a cabin with no mobile phone coverage (alarm bells ringing?) suddenly 4 strangers turn up (alarm siren yet?)strangers believe that the couple have a role to play in saving the world (never ends well does it)

A tense novel & I could see it being made in to a fim & that ending is perfect. Yes in some ways I hated it but in other ways to try & clear things up would have been a let down.

I enjoyed Groff‘s writing & found the development of the Abbey fascinating. Loved how quick witted Marie is & how she managed 2 outsmart everyone who attempted to challenge her authority. The secondary characters were great to & it was interesting to see what Groff imagined life in an all-female enclave would look like.

Not sure why this book needed to be as long as it was the actual point of the story could have been covered in a few hundred pages of you got rid of the meandering and the debating you would have a nice concise book about what is means to be a good person and how cultures influence that.

This felt like a cheat for Malta as only a small part is set in Malta but that bit is based on the author‘s experience. Spoiler alert it wasn‘t good.

This is actually a sweeping history of the last 100 or so years told from the POV of an ageing gay novelist with very British snark and humour.

Loved the way all the threads come together with that shocking reveal at the end.

Love the reading stats on my new Kobo ❤️

An interesting Novella that turns the concept of the traditional detective story on its head. In this no one is what they appear to be and all have hidden motivation.

The remote setting is very much a part of this story as well. Time and place are very important and give additional insights.

mandarchy I was curious about Kobo. When you rate the book or review it from that prompt does it update to a Kobo site? Will it update another site like goodreads? The stats are pretty cool. 1mo
BookwormM @mandarchy it updates direct to Kobo site not seen anywhere to link other accounts so guess as Goodreads is owned by Amazon that wouldn‘t happen 1mo
mandarchy @BookwormM that makes sense. It really irks me how Amazon bought goodreads and now Facebook owns Instagram. Makes me appreciate Litsy even more. Knock on wood... 1mo
BookwormM @mandarchy I still haven‘t forgiven Amazon for buying Shelfari and then closing it. Shelfari was far superior to GR when it came to discussion and reading groups 1mo

Wow – this book is so detailed it almost feels like you are right there at the scene of the crime.

This provides a fascinating insight into the early days of policing and criminology. Especially fascinating was the idea of what could and couldn‘t be used as evidence and how this affected the ultimate outcome of the trial.

I will be going with the tagged chunkster for this months read.

I could not find a book by a Maltese author so I have settled for a book set in Malta based on the author‘s experience there. After reading A Clockwork Orange years ago I am intrigued to see where this book goes.

rockpools I haven‘t found a book for Malta yet! And I haven‘t reviewed my Brunei 🇧🇳 book- but I enjoyed it 😊 🐍 2mo
Currey Going with Kappillan of Malta which is a “meandering” historical novel set during WWII….I don‘t particularly enjoy war stories and I am a bit too crazed at this time of year for “meandering” but it was the only book I could find that took place in Malta and it has some good reviews on GR. #Readaroundtheworld (edited) 2mo

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. At over 1000 pages I was thinking this was going to be a look at minute details of Tom‘s life, instead we have 18 books which begin with a discourse about the nature of fiction writing and what is good & bad.

The main story about Tom I would classify as a romance. Many years are skipped over until we get to Tom‘s womanising and his love affair.

Later life is summed up in a few words.

I can see why this won. Really enjoyed this almost simplistic tale of family, friendship and grief.

This starts out as a road trip to scatter a mates ashes as per his last request it starts out fairly light hearted and then as the story progresses we see the history between these men the good, the bad and the ugly.

These characters really stole my heart luckily I kept my cash close.

#Audio

The narrator sounded just like Hilary Clinton which was probably a deliberate decision however it gave the book the air of an extended rant against anyone who had offended her when she was in office. Added to this was the fact that the other characters were thinly disguised caricatures of world leaders somewhat spoilt the book for me.

The story itself was OK but it felt waaay longer than necessary

The best way I can sum this book up is GWTW Northern Irish style. We replace the American civil war with The Troubles & Scarlet with Mary a modest girl from a poor family whose one mistake at 16 defines the rest of her life including the fact that she is so blinded by what could have been that she fails to see what it is she actually has.
