Usher's Passing
Usher's Passing | Robert R. McCammon

Poes classic tale lives on in this gothic novel of ancestral madness in the mountains of modern-day North Carolina, from a New York Timesbestselling author. Ever since Edgar Allan Poe looted a familys ignoble secret history for his classic story The Fall of the House of Usher, living in the shadow of that sick dynasty has been an inescapable scourge for generations of Usher descendants. But not for horror novelist Rix Usher. Years ago, he fled the isolated family estate of Usherland in the menacing North Carolina hills to pursue his writing career. He promised never to return. But his fathers impending death has brought Rix back home to assume the role of Usher patriarchand face his worst fears. His arrival forces him to confront a devious and impassive family and his vulnerable sisters slow descent into insanity. Stirring memories of the grim folktales born out of the surrounding Briartop Mountains and the terrifying legends of missing children, Rix knows that in the dark, twisted corridors of Usherland, that dreadful something he saw as a young boy is still there. Its waiting for him, as decayed and undying as the Usher heritage, and more depraved than anything Poe could have imagined. This eerie novel by the Bram Stoker Awardwinning author of Swan Song and Boys Life is a frightening pleasure and a worthy tribute to the master who inspired it (St. Louis Post-Dispatch).

McCammon is one of my favourite authors, so naturally I thought I'd like this one; I'm disappointed though as this one wasn't my cup of tea.

It has a weird disjointed plot line and none of the characters were likeable.

I just didn't care for any of it, I've loved every book I've read by this author so it came as a surprise that I didn't dig this one; it just dragged on forever.

Not up to the standard of his other works.

Addison_Reads Sorry you didn't like this one. It's not my favorite by him, but I still enjoyed it. 2y

Did anyone take advantage of the buy 2 get 1 free sale at Target last week? I bought Night Shift, The Rust Maidens, and December Park. Then ordered one book from amazon. Then I made the mistake of browsing eBay where I found a signed copy of Usher‘s Passing. Now I seriously have to put myself on a book buying ban. 😬

amywithbooks I just read December Park and LOVED it!! 3y

This book follows the fate of the descendants of Poe's #gothic tale, The Fall of the House of Usher.

Another great read by McCammon.

This was a creepy, wild ride. The story is a fictitious look into the Usher family that inspired Poe's Fall of the House of Usher.

McCammon delivers page turning thrills involving a haunted house, witches, a family torn apart by their secrets, and a scary urban legend about a creature in the woods who eats children.
