Oldham Athletic
Oldham Athletic: A Pictorial History | Tony Bugby
7 posts
Latics were founded as Pine Villa FC in 1895, but four years later rivals Oldham County folded and Villa moved to their stadium, the Athletics Ground, to become Oldham Athletic. A meteoric rise saw them elected to the Football League in 1907, quickly promoted and runners-up in the First Division in 1914/15. They were relegated in 1923, and it would take sixty-eight years and many traumas before they finally regained their top-flight status. In a highly successful period under Joe Royle, Latics reached the 1990 League Cup final, won the Second Division title in 1991, and a year after that became founder members of the new Premier League. Division One has brought much drama, including a period in administration in 2003/04. Tony Bugby, having watched the Latics for the last forty years as a fan, newspaper reporter during the good times under Joe Royle and as a club website editor, gives us a potted history of the club from founding to the present day.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor. #SitDown #RedRoseSeptember @Cinfhen

arlenefinnigan For context, Oldham Athletic are currently 21st in the 4th division, and sacked yet another head coach yesterday (and unveiled the new one 16 minutes later, which is a bit unpleasant). Not that it matters cos the club owner and his brother pick the team, seemingly with the intention of showcasing players they've brought in who aren't good enough (they're both former agents), for reasons we can only guess at. Grim times. 5y

Cinfhen Awwwww, I admire your dedication though 💕 5y
arlenefinnigan @Cinfhen alas, we haven't renewed our season tickets this year. I'm not prepared to give money to an owner who isn't paying the bills, isn't pay the employees pension contributions, and treats the staff terribly. 5y
Cinfhen I think your making a moral decision, as hard as it might be. What a terrible ownership 5y
TrishB Shocking going‘s on ☹️ 5y

Not the #BestDay for our own Great Dane in goal, Daniel Iversen, but a great effort to come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 #SeptemberDanes @Kalalalatja @Cinfhen

arlenefinnigan @Mdargusch it's niche, I admit 😉 6y

#DontStopBelievin #RockInMay
Never give up. Not even in the 95th minute against a Premiership team. (Sorry, couldn't resist going football related for this.)
@Cinfhen

Cinfhen Your definitely a devoted fan❤️⚽️😊 7y
arlenefinnigan @Cinfhen it's moments like this that make sitting through us getting beaten by Lincoln City worthwhile. 7y

DeborahSmall ⚽️💚 7y
arlenefinnigan @DeborahSmall I met my husband after this game. Weirdly, his ex girlfriend introduced us (she was a mutual friend). I like to joke that he ended up marrying me and not her because she had a Rangers shirt as a teenager (cos she fancied Ally McCoist 😝) whereas I've always been a Tim 💚 7y
DeborahSmall @arlenefinnigan I fancied Ally too 😜 although I never wore a rangers shirt. About 10 years ago when my Celtic crazy sister lived here, we went to a bar on the Falls Rd part of Belfast, to watch an old firm game. I wore one of Eileen's Celtic tops and of course we got a photo to send dad 😂 7y
arlenefinnigan @DeborahSmall hehehehe. I'm sure he appreciated it 😉 7y
DeborahSmall I'm looking through FB for it now. I'm sure I was blootered 7y
