A Lesson in Dying
A Lesson in Dying | Ann Cleeves
8 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
Who hanged the headmaster in the playground on the night of the school Hallowe'en Party? Almost everyone in Heppleburn either hated or feared the viper-tongued Harold Medburn. Inspector Ramsay is convinced it was the headmaster's enigmatic wife but Jack Robson, school governor and caretaker, is determined to prove her innocence. With the help of his restless enthusiastic daughter, Patty, Jack digs into the secrets of Heppleburn, and uncovers a cesspit - of lies, adultery, blackmail and madness.

Initially,I was unsure as to how I felt about this book, wondering was it because of its slow pace? But then I realized it was for me,a new way of experiencing the reading of a murder mystery. The story is narrated through the eyes of the villagers,& of two in particular, who took it upon themselves to try and solve the murder. Inspector Ramsey was just at the periphery of the story, rather than its main protagonist & driving force of the plot.

willaful Sounds interesting. 3w

Woke around 5:30. Had coffee on my porch- it was sweat shirt weather. Sun wasn‘t totally up yet over the trees. Quiet except for bird song. Two hummingbirds flitted through my bee balm. One flew up on the porch, sipped some geranium nectar, then flitted back to a feeder & flower pot on a Shepard s hook. I did not read; just sat taking my surroundings in while sipping my coffee. Bliss.

I love Ann Cleeves, but Inspector Ramsey was new to me. The tone of the book is definitely a bit dated, but the mystery is fast-paced and interesting, with Cleeves‘ usual key insights into human nature. She has such a masterful way of imparting a sense of place, with such evocative language, it really is impressive and always a good read. I wouldn‘t say I loved this book, but I did enjoy it. Soft pick.

First book in an older series by Ann Cleeves, the Inspector Ramsay Series. This was written in 1990 and was much shorter than her more modern series.
You could certainly see the talent developing in these books and it was an enjoyable read.

First published 1990, now reissued with fancy new cover, bought in kindle sale. Police procedural set in a NE town that felt a bit ploddy and dated.
Think I'll stick to her new ones!

myellenbee I haven't heard of that one. But speaking of new Ann Cleeves books, today at the library I got "The Long Call" the first of a new series. I'm very excited to read it. 6y
charl08 I am 55 in the queue for it! 6y
myellenbee Wow, I guess I lucked out! It was just on the new large print book shelf. Which I'm finding sadly much easier to read these day. 6y
charl08 @myellenbee love it when that happens! 6y

Wow, that was a fast read! The first book in a series, introducing Inspector Ramsey. Everything happened fast in this book and it felt like it was over before it started. The headmaster is murdered, and it turns out no one really liked him. But, who murdered him? I will continue with the series hoping that the series will get better and the characters having more depth. 3+ stars.
