"What we have here is a bad case of stripes. One of the worst I've ever seen!" Camilla Cream loves lima beans, but she never eats them. Why? Because the other kids in her school don't like them. And Camilla Cream is very, very worried about what other people think of her. In fact, she's so worried that she's about to break out in...a bad case of stripes!

“Camilla was always very worried about what other people thought of her”. This quote will probably connect with a lot of children, as many of them are insecure and this could be an easy way to bond with this book.

Quite honestly, this book spooked me and many other people I know as a child. The illustrations are very vivid and bizarre. I would not read this book to a group of children for the sake of not scaring them.

Review: This book is about a girl named Camilla and she loves lima beans. Camilla becomes so worried about what other children will think of her if they find out she likes lima beans that she breaks out into a bad case of stripes. This book chronicles Camilla as she learns that not everyone likes or dislikes the same things and gradually results in her not caring if the other children know she likes lima beans.

This book has such a great meaning for kids. It gives them the message to not let others actions change you because you could end up hurting yourself. The illustrations in this book are just awesome. They‘re so detailed and full of color.

I would use this modern fantasy picture book in my classroom as a read aloud. Camilla Cream, a closeted lover or Lima beans, and a worrier about others‘ opinions of her, wakes up on the first day of school completely covered in stripes. If the stripes weren‘t bad enough, her skin begins to develop everything people suggest she has. The story raises the question of whether or not it is important to care about what people think of you. #lae3414sp19

SofiaRoselli The website I found gives great discussion questions as well as guidelines for discussion. With the various discussing questions, I can guide information processing, UDL strategy 3.3, in students. ESOL strategy 1, teach questioning for clarification, would also come out of the discussion questions.

caldwellalex95 @SofiaRoselli I used to hate this book when I was younger, but now I absolutely adore it. Isn't that funny?! I love the link you provided for us to check out; I used "Teaching Children Philosophy's" website in plenty of my posts, too. It's important for students to be provided discussion questions so they confirm their understanding of the text. Anyway, great post! This book is so colorful and entertaining! 7mo

This book was about a girl who was overly concerned about what others thought. Even though she loves Lima beans she pretends she hates them because others don‘t like them. This leads to her literally changing for others. She has a case of the stripes! After a lady comes to help her she is forced to admit she loves Lima beans and learns to be herself.

David Shannon has written and illustrated a wonderful F book that goes deeper than the average elementary school story. Camilla Cream develops the worst case of stripes that was ever seen, and all because she worried that others would laugh at her love for lima beans! The desire to be accepted is an ongoing issue in schools today! Use this as a RA during the first week of school to help with all of the nerves! #LAE3414sp19

melindamcmullen84 UDL strategy 8.3 and 9.3 would work great with this book. ESOL 2 and 10 would be great for literature response groups to explore issues of common interest. 9mo
kkimmelman This is a great book for a lesson on acceptance. I remember reading this book in elementary school. I really like how you included a lesson plan for the two age groups, I think that was a wonderful addition. @melindamcmullen84 (edited) 9mo
DrSpalding I like that you added to resources that show that this picture book could be used in multiple grade levels. Picture books are meant to be read aloud to all elementary students. Students in the upper grades need to hear a proficient reader, read aloud! Excellent alignment. This was a dollar book recently on Scholastic! 9mo
alexandracarpenter I loved this book when I was a child! Definitely a fun read. I loved how you provided two separate lesson plans for younger and older kids~ awesome resources! 8mo

bookishkris I don‘t understand not wanting to “waste” money on books (the excuses I used to hear about why parents didn‘t get books from Scholastic). They‘re so cheap if you order them. My Favorite story as a child! It was read to me in a read aloud in the classroom and was later bought for independent reading (IR) in the house, strategies that are useful for students. This fantasy(f) picture book is about a young girl who just wants to fit in, but finds in horror how different she is when she wakes up with a bad case of stripes. Great story that won multiple awards and teachers children about peer-pressure.

I loved this book, this is a low fantasy fiction book winner of the Black Eyed Susan Award, and is great for teaching kids to be unique. This book is about a girl who lets the opinions of others literally dictate how she looks, she goes through many transformations before learning that it‘s okay to be different and she should embrace it. #ucflae3414sp18

This hilarious F book is a fun read for students. It would be grade as a PR, IR, and RA. This story is about a girl who loves lima beans but she was afraid to let people know how much she truly loved them. She was worried her peers would make fun of her but little did she know what would happen if she stopped eating them. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bad-Case-of-Stripes-Descriptive-Writ...

amyqualk The website takes you to teachers pay teachers website. Although it does cost money it could give you great ideas for your own lesson plans. I would use UDL 1.1 customize the display and ESOL 1 teach questioning for clarification. These strategies can be used to help students understand what is happening in the story. #UCFLAE3414F17 2y
CaseyL I love the theme of being true to yourself! Although it could be a perfect RA, I read it to my VPK students this past summer and a lot of the children were scared of the way the girl looked as the story went on. A lot of the children never wanted to see the book again and the message of being yourself was lost on them. :( I still love this story! Great post! 2y

This book was one of my favorites growing up as I tend to be shy and concerned what others think. This F can be a short IR or RA. It is a story about being true to yourself no matter what others think, as long as you‘re happy, even if it means you eat Lima beans and other kids don‘t! This story meets UDL 6.1 guide appropriate goal setting as you could set goals for kids through the year both personal and school related.

Susancruz It also meets EL 3 encourage self-talk (positive thinking) as it shows to be positive about yourself and be yourself! The link takes you right to scholastic where there is a lesson plan for the book and even tells you to talk to your students about what worries them about starting school and that is so important! https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/bad-case-strip... 2y

This Low Fantasy book is a crazy story about a girl named Camilla who loves lima beans, but will never admit it in fear of being teased. So, she develops a bad case of stripes! This eccentric tale would make for a cute RA with a class of first to third graders! Though it‘s a silly story, it also tells a good lesson to be yourself, and accept diversity in others.

MorganH Because of the subtle lesson in the story, EL 15 should be used, reinforcing the idea of acceptance over and over again, both for the benefit of EL‘s, and the entire class in general. http://thepicturebookteachersedition.blogspot.com/2012/09/a-bad-case-of-stripes-... provides an ample amount of ideas to incoorporate this book into different lessons such as point of view, cause and effect, sequencing, and more. 2y
MorganH UDL 9.3 ‘Develop self-assessmemt and reflection‘ could be used to help students think about what they have that makes themselves unique, and celebrate as a class each others‘ differences! #UCFLAE3414F17 2y
