It is the moment every twenty-something must confront: the time to grow up. Adulthood looms, with all it's numbing tranquility and stifling complacency. The end of prolonged adolescence is near. Laura and Tyler are two women whose twenties have been a blur of overstayed parties, a fondness for drugs that has shifted from cautious experimentation to catholic indulgence, and hangovers that don't relent until Monday morning. They've been best friends, partners in excess, for the last ten years. But things are changing: Laura is engaged to Jim, a classical pianist who has long since given up the carousing lifestyle. He disapproves of Tyler's reckless ways and of what he percieves to be her bad influence on Laura. Jim pulls Laura toward adulthood and responsibility, toward what society says she should be, but Tyler isn't ready to let her go. But what does Laura want for herself? And how can she choose between Tyler and Jim, between one life she loves and another she's "supposed" to love? Raw, uproarious, and deeply affecting, Animals speaks to an entire generation caught between late-adolescence and adulthood wondering what exactly they'll have to give up in order to grow up.

I got completely lost in it and finished it in 24 hours. You love to hate (and relate) to the main characters. The ending felt very rushed - I don‘t know what I wanted to happen but it felt a bit like I missed out on something, would be curious to know how others felt about how the story finished.

I was immediately drawn in by the humour in the first-person narrative, and then became horribly fascinated by the train wreck element in the friendship between Laura and Tyler, two women in their late twenties in Manchester. Was it time for Laura to grow out of blackout drinking and drugging? If so, what would happen to her bond with Tyler? The engaging #audiobook is read by Chloe Massey.

Blaire Nice review! You have such a nice sense of the book. #stacked 3y

One of the only times Jim had stayed at mine I‘d woken in the night and grabbed a glass of what I‘d thought was water, only to hear Jim shout, “Nooooo!” It was too late. I‘d drunk his contact lenses.

“Americans,” Marty said, watching her. “Don‘t you just adore them? They‘re like basking sharks, running at life with their mouths open.”

I‘ve been winding skeins into balls in preparation for my next knitting project. Perfect #audiocrafting activity.

LeahBergen What lovely colours! 3y
Lindy @LeahBergen Thanks. The yellows are all made from plants in my garden. I‘m making a tunic — it will be like wearing my garden. 😊 3y

Struggled between a pick & so-so. This book is an alcohol soaked and drug fueled adventure with engaged Laura and party girl Tyler. The moments between the two friends were strong and addicting to read (my liver hurt just reading it). A large part of this story centers around Laura and her square fiancé Jim, though, and their relationship is never anything that we get to root for. Great read, tho, especially for those of us in our 20's!

Just started this morning. So far it's like if Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 was British and the girls were more broke. Witty banter and female friendships (plus, I love anything on Europa). Looking forward to this!

BooksForEmpathy Oh I read this!! I loved it! Fast, juicy, dirty read 😍. 7y
Smangela Oooh I liked that show! 7y

Perhaps not the most artistic #bookface, but thematically appropriate given that it is National Margarita Day. #cheers #happyNationalMargaritaDay #riotgrams @bookriot #tbr #EuropaEditions

I think I liked this one - I'm not 100% sure since the characters aren't really likeable? The main character parties ALL THE TIME (5 drinks is her happy hour norm, before she even goes out for a night of partying) and I just can't relate to that I guess. But I like reading things about different lifestyles and relationships, and that's exactly what this was, so I'm calling it a pick 🤓

Lacythebookworm This one is on my TBR. Glad to read a favorable review! 7y

You could think that this is Broad City in England, in a book. And you wouldn't be far off. But Unsworth takes it deeper. For me, though, not enough. This is supposed to be a story about unapologetic female friendships. But it's hard to see what fuels this friendship beyond drugs.
I applaud the effort - it's not Beaches, or some other schmaltz. But if this is what modern female friendships ought to be, I'll just stay home with my books 📚

Yes, Elle-- taking shots is "an utterly triumphant ode to female friendship." Have to admit, love the cover and love the blurb!
