17 Carnations
17 Carnations: The Royals, the Nazis, and the Biggest Cover-Up in History | Andrew Morton
8 posts | 13 read | 27 to read
A meticulously researched historical tour de force about the secret ties among Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, the Duke of Windsor, and Adolf Hitler before, during, and after World War II. Andrew Morton tells the story of the feckless Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor, his American wife, Wallis Simpson, the bizarre wartime Nazi plot to make him a puppet king after the invasion of Britain, and the attempted cover-up by Churchill, General Eisenhower, and King George VI of the duke's relations with Hitler. From the alleged affair between Simpson and the German foreign minister to the discovery of top secret correspondence about the man dubbed "the traitor king" and the Nazi high command, this is a saga of intrigue, betrayal, and deception suffused with a heady aroma of sex and suspicion. For the first time, Morton reveals the full story behind the cover-up of those damning letters and diagrams: the daring heist ordered by King George VI, the smooth duplicity of a Soviet spy as well as the bitter rows and recriminations among the British and American diplomats, politicians, and academics. Drawing on FBI documents, exclusive pictures, and material from the German, Russian, and British royal archives, as well as the personal correspondence of Churchill, Eisenhower, and the Windsors themselves, 17 CARNATIONS is a dazzling historical drama, full of adventure, intrigue, and startling revelations, written by a master of the genre.

My best friend and I are making our way through a Crown-inspired reading list this year, kicking off with 17 Carnations. I am equal parts fascinated and horrified by David and Wallis, and so far
Morton's book is keeping both of those feelings alive and well! #NumberInTitle #JumpIntoJanuary #CurrentlyReading #RoyalRead
@Eggs

Eggs Ooo I‘m anxious to read all your crown-inspired reviews!!! There are photos of these 2 consorting with Hitler-this should be great reading! 3y
Cinfhen This sounds fascinating 3y

While I always enjoy reading about Wallis Simpson (and anyone who makes life difficult for the royal family), reading about her husband, the former King Edward VIII, just wasn't as interesting. He was pretty much just a whiny man-child who briefly relied on Hitler to help him find a way to reclaim the throne he gave up for the woman he loved.

Texreader Wow, telling it like it is! Excellent review! 4y

Hoping the American marrying into the Royal Family works out better than this one. Though to be fair -they certainly seemed to love each other.

CarolynM Not according to some contemporary reports, but they may have been biased - see 6y
TrishB @CarolynM interesting 👍🏻 6y
TheNextBook Her name is Meghan and I‘m super excited for her and Harry! Especially because Harry has always been the wild child and it‘s nice to see him so settled and happy. Meghan is from Los Angeles, like me, and I think they‘ll be fine. Kate didnt have any royal blood and she has done great. Can‘t wait to see what she is wearing! 6y

eanderson I definitely agree with you! 6y
Bookwomble Of the British public, 79% find it acceptable for a non-Briton to marry into the royal family; only 69% find it acceptable for a non-white person to marry in, and; only 44% would find a same-sex royal marriage acceptable. Seems we still have some work to do on letting other people live happy lives. https://yougov.co.uk/news/2017/11/29/5-charts-british-reaction-prince-harrys-eng... 6y
TrishB @TheNextBook I think she seems lovely 💕 6y
TheNextBook @Bookwomble exactly!!!!! But they look beautiful and happy!!!! Wishing them the absolute best! 6y
TrishB @Bookwomble agreed. Would be interesting to see the age split there. That probably is re-enacted across society unfortunately. 6y
TheNextBook @trishb I adore her and Kate!!!! I just don‘t see how Diana would have wanted anything more she did such a good job raising those two boys to be amazing men. 6y
Bookwomble As individuals, I wish them the same happiness I wish for every other couple starting out their lives together. 6y
Bookwomble @TrishB You can see the age split in the full report. Not surprisingly, the older the age bracket, the less tolerant of difference. 6y
TrishB @Bookwomble 😔 some hope for the future!! 6y
Cinfhen Meghan & Harry are adorable 💕 I hope they have a beautiful life together. Unlike Wallis & The Duke...horrible 😖 6y
TrishB @Cinfhen they were not a nice couple 😔 (Wallis and the Duke!) 6y

I never liked these two, but this part of the story makes me despise them. (Not enough to stop reading about them, though.) #17 #youknowimnogood #tuneintonovember #novemberbythenumbers

Laura317 I‘ve heard this. They aren‘t my favorite either. But since the royal family has quite a bit of German in the bloodline, I‘m not too surprised. I‘m glad he abdicated. 6y
OrangeMooseReads I haven‘t read anything about them yet. I have ‘That Woman‘ and hope to read it next year. I know a little about them though. 6y

Birdsong28 That woman is so good. All I knew about Wallis was about the Abdication crisis but its a real eye opener about her and her involvement in it. 📚📖 6y
rubyslippersreads @Birdsong28 I'll have to move it up my TBR list. 6y
Centique @Birdsong28 I loved That Woman too and yes wasn‘t it eye opening?! If he had been king WW2 might have gone very differently for England. 😳😳 6y
Birdsong28 @Centique Yes it would have been very different as she was trying to stop him from abdicating and even said she would give him up so he could stay king. So this book shows a competely different side to what is usually portrayed about her. I am currently reading Another women's husband by Gill Paul (fiction) that connects Princess Diana and her as two women that were a 'problem' for the royal family its really good. 📚📖 6y
Jess_Read_This If you want to follow up with a podcast on her. The History Chicks just did a two part podcast discussing Wallis Simpson and her life. So interesting!! 6y

I was geared up for a dishy book from the author of "Diana" but even though the story of Wallace & Edward doesn't lack in salacious details it gets mired up in the legalese of the plot of trying to cover up their affinity with the nazis. Give me sex! Give me family feuds! Give me ballsy broads!
