Hide the Elephant
Hide the Elephant | Jonathan Dunne
25 posts | 10 read | 48 to read
Forcefully-retired zoo-keeper Mick Munroe is hiding two BIG things: Alzheimers and a 42 year-old Indian elephant called Sinbad.
Mick and his elephant become overnight on-the-run, anti-hero legends when Mick, an old rebel with a cause, takes matters into his own hands.
The Alzheimer's brings Mick something very special: an adventure he never thought possible with his dear old friend, Sinbad.

I‘ve been updating my 2019 book journal. I finished #litsyatoz back in August, but I want to keep adding the books I‘m reading in 2019. Books starting with “H” have been a big success this year! #letterH

I saw here on Litsy that Jonathan Dunne's books were free on Amazon so I got them and hoped that I would be able to give a good review since @JonathanDunne is on here! Readers, I am happy to report that I can honestly give this book a solid thumbs up.
Quirky, funny, sad. All the feels for this story. I even welled up a bit in the last few pages.
Looking forward to reading the other titles I picked up by Dunne.

This is a completely wacky, totally heartwarming fun and short read about a zookeeper with Alzheimer‘s who steals and then must hide an elephant. If you followed my quotes from the book here on Litsy you‘ll note it has heartbreaking insight into knowingly losing oneself over time to Alzheimer‘s. Recommended to break a reading slump in record time.

JonathanDunne 👌Glad you liked the book. 5mo

Sorry for all the quotes but oh how I love how the author (a fellow Litten) describes things!

“It‘s like being on all seven continents at once.”

Brilliant!!

Dang! This book feels so insightful about what anticipating full-blown Alzheimer‘s must feel like.

The MC has lost his job because of Alzheimer‘s & now faces forced retirement. The MC is such a sympathetic character. This quote has all the feels: “I feel home-sick again: sick of being at home.”

This book is helping me out of a slump: a quick page-turner. Alas, it has some un-PC language that gives me pause because I can‘t tell if it‘s meant to be the narrator‘s personality or something else. But I do want to know what happens to the elephant!

JonathanDunne IT'S Micks un-PC CHARACTER. You must bear in mind that Mick is something of a rebel without knowing it and is old-school. PC means Police Constable as far as Mick is concerned 😁 5mo
Texreader @JonathanDunne I didn‘t expect a response from the author! 😉 Thank you! I figured I‘d sort it out sooner or later. 5mo

“But what‘s more terrifying is that I forget myself, but I continue being Mick Munroe to everybody else; they will see my decline until I am a stranger. They will know me when I don‘t know me. That idea is unnerving.”

Wow! I‘ve never thought about Alzheimer‘s from this perspective. Frightening.

GingerAntics That is terrifying. That‘s heart breaking. 💔 5mo

I had to stop and consider how I was viewing this house. It's been overcast in my real world, so the weather situation in the book is similar to my current reality. I've never pondered this before. If the author doesn't provide all the little details, what goes on in your head?

Lacythebookworm 🙌😊 You should check out 3y
MMenefee @Lacythebookworm Thanks for the suggestion! That sounds like a fascinating read. 3y

Cinfhen Not yet...I know the author is here on Litsy, I'm just waiting to make a dent in my TBR! My daughter has an obsession with elephants, so I was drawn to the silhouette immediately 🙂 3y

Well, that was a fun little read! Quirky and funny, at times sad, but mostly happy. I particularly like how you, the reader, are a character. This wouldn't work in every book, but it works here. Such a delightfully weird journey!

Survey:

Should an author narrate their own audiobook? Examples of good author narrators V bad narrators?

The table is yours...

CherylDeFranceschi Yes. Author narrated books are a good thing. 3y
melbeautyandbooks I like author narrated books that are memoirs or story collections. They are literally telling you their life story. 3y
Alfoster I'm not sure. I don't really do audio books. I've heard several authors at book signings read excerpts and I wasn't impressed (Connelly). And I LOVE his books! 3y
See All 17 Comments
JonathanDunne @Alfoster I agree with you. 3y
JonathanDunne @melbeautyandbooks I think you're right about non-fiction. But just because somebody authored the book does not necessarily mean that they can narrate the book. 3y
readinginthedark There are a couple that haven't worked for me, but most authors I've heard narrating their own books did a really good job. I think they have a natural feel for the flow of their own writing. 3y
KarenUK Non fiction I always prefer the author... Fiction, I think is hit and miss with authors.... though love Donna Tartt reading Secret History, and Collin McCann reading Thirteen Ways of looking.... 3y
Karkar I like it when the author reads their own books as long as the are easy to understand and are not monotone. With audiobooks the narrator can make or break the book. 3y
Megabooks Bad Lauren Conrad. Good Shonda Rimes and Libba Bray! 3y
moranadatter Good: Jenny Lawson 3y
PurpleyPumpkin I find that non-fiction books/autobiographies are usually narrated by the author. So far, I've enjoyed the books I've listened to and I felt more connected to the story and the writer. 3y

My 4th novel 'Hide the Elephant' has just been added to the Litsy database, by God. Pretty please, take it into consideration when looking for that next book.
PS It's on SALE right now @ ,99c as all my ebooks are to celebrate the launch of Lighthouse Jive.
