Cinderella Ate My Daughter
Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture | Peggy Orenstein
19 posts | 43 read | 78 to read
The rise of the girlie-girl, warns Peggy Orenstein, is no innocent phenomenon. Following her acclaimed books Flux, Schoolgirls, and the provocative New York Times bestseller Waiting for Daisy, Orensteins Cinderella Ate My Daughter offers a radical, timely wake-up call for parents, revealing the dark side of a pretty and pink culture confronting girls at every turn as they grow into adults.

There were a lot of statistics in this book, most of them were no surprise if you‘re even remotely familiar with the topic. But I would have liked more research (maybe it just hasn‘t been done) on ways to counteract the negative impacts of this Disney Princess pink explosion culture the book focuses on. I thought the author had a limited view of feminism or maybe it‘s changed that much since publication. I liked the personal sections the best.

1. The tagged book. I literally threw it across the room while reading it.

2. Spare, or anything else by or about current royals.

RaeLovesToRead Haven't heard of the Cinderella one, but it sounds awful! 1y
TieDyeDude I don't understand the fascination with the royals. The queen's death was barely a blip on my radar, and I couldn't care less about the rest. 1y
Sharpeipup I Second Spare. Nil desire to read even reviews of it … even less so to spend any time on the book itself. 1y

OrangeMooseReads @TieDyeDude I‘ll read stuff about Queen Elizabeth cause she was kind of a badass lol and I‘ll read about those from history but the young royals no thanks it‘s just drama. 1y
OrangeMooseReads @Sharpeipup I have only seen the humor reviews about it. 1y

I was hoping to find out why millennials like Disney so much; instead, I read a book by a Gen X mother that doesn‘t understand why her Gen Z daughter likes pink and is so good at the Internet.

Unlike Peggy‘s other books, there aren‘t a lot of solutions here, perhaps because she is talking about her own daughter!!

Anyway, I just found it to be an exercise in enumerating the ways Gens X and Z differ. 2.5⭐️

Interesting look at pink princess culture and how aggressively it‘s marketed to girls.

🎙While it's great to see girls represented more on the movie screen and in the toy aisles, do you ever wonder how a princess-saturated culture impacts girls? In CINDERELLA ATE MY DAUGHTER, Peggy Orenstein basically makes a pros and cons list to determine if too much princess actually undermines girl's empowerment. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I liked this one a lot. Need to read more of her stuff! 7y
Char I have seen a few different shirt sayings lately that focus on "forget princess I would rather be an astrophycist". Ideas like this and promoting the STEM activies will help with the push back on princess overload. 7y

I can't. Nope. She is clearly not in any way, shape, or form a knowledgeable scholarly person. Her writing and "insights" come of as ignorant. And I don't know what crap censored version of Grimm Fairy Tales she was reading but they sure as hell did leave the sex bits in the tales. And damnit Cinderella wanted a dress and to go to the ball she didn't ask to attract the prince! It is a "girl power" story.

OrangeMooseReads And yes I did throw it. 7y
SpiderCrafts I wondered if hearing this book out may have had fair positives, while I'm sensing the views are over-worried. Positives I look for in these, are a reasonable, wise and strong way about it, while never being 'at fault' for negatives of an outside force. Hopefully some self-rescuing Star Wars to princess empowerment for the better. 🛡 7y
DogMomIrene Oh no. How disappointing! Thanks for the heads up, though. 7y
AWahle I'm happy to see I wasn't the only one. I wrote a long review on Goodreads 3 years ago. I couldn't take "research" from a woman who said Hera was Wonder Woman's mother... 7y
OrangeMooseReads @AWahle I didn't get that far. I couldn't tell where she did any research at all. I know she is a journalist and not a academic writer but still some of the things she wrote were way off and face palm worthy. 7y

Princess culture is complicated, so I am happy to find a well-researched book that dissects it, identifies problems, and proposes solutions. Some notes:
-Princesses perpetuate patriarchal constructs they supposedly combat, don't encourage female friendship
-Division of genders widens gap between them
-Girls are encouraged to define themselves by appearance
-Death of mothers in movies = normalizes a lack of female role models in girl‘s lives

Lise Sounds great! Can also recommend Susan Ostrov Weisser's (edited) 7y
autumnprivett @Lise Excellent. Thanks! 7y

I also read in my car when I'm waiting to pick up Man Cub, but I wasn't going back outside to take a picture of the inside of my car, it's cold out there.

I think I'm going to have to make a change to my #litsyatoz 'The Crimson Petal and the White' is just pissing me off. Perhaps I will come back to it at a less militant/staunch feminist time when I can better allow my mind to accept that it was a different time. Until that time I'm replacing my letter C with this book.

My fav August read(s)? Well, Litsy obvs., but I signed up a fortnight ago, so before that there was this must-read. The reach and speed with which Disney princess culture has gained traction is alarming and damaging. The insidiousness of what I've decided to term 'pedestal culture' is creating a revolution no one signed up for - girls are constantly fed the msg to sparkle, shine and be admired rather than engage and interact. Review continued ...

EnidBiteEm Orenstein makes the point that the Disney franchise is bigger than McDonalds (and The Gruen Transfer points out that the golden M is now more recognisable than the Christian cross.) A huge spike in eating disorders and body image and mental health issues have followed, and no wonder ... this book is a must read for anyone charged with the care of a young person. Now, to check out Orenstein's other books ... 😀 8y
BookishFeminist I really enjoyed her newest book earlier this year- it was a tad alarmist at points but the research was really thorough & empathetically done. I've been recommending it to so many people so I may as well include you, too. 🙃 8y
EnidBiteEm @BookishFeminist thanks. I read a review of that yesterday,by a 17 y o, who thanked Orenstein for writing it and understanding the pressures. I will definitely read it. And yes, alarmism needs to be balanced - I also took notes from CAMD on what msgs/practices are helpful when raising/educating teenagers - there was a lot less of this, but there was still some there 😀 8y

Yes, oh my goodness, yes. While this book is a must read for everyone, it's especially so for people with daughters or granddaughters. Learn how much marketing changes the way we view femininity and girls expressing it. I want to hand this out at every baby shower I attend. 👏🏽👸🏽 | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Yossarian I don't know. Cinderella definitely ate my 2-year-old, but had vomited her back up by four or five. Now, she running for President of her high school Feminism Club. 8y
Yossarian And I mean literally. I'd come home from work and her sneaker would be by the front door. I'd have to pick it up, finding her hopping around in one sneaker, and prove the other sneaker for before we could move on with our evening. 8y
mllemay I found this super interesting (and frustrating). I really want to read her new one now. 8y

Even though none of the observations in this book surprised me, it still stirred up some anger at how our society defines and constrains women (and the reality that going against the mold is often a painful experience). Read it to understand what is, and get a glimpse of what could be.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I enjoyed this book a lot too. Pink LEGOs infuriate me. 8y
