Hothouse Flower
Hothouse Flower | Lucinda Riley
Note to readers: Outside of the UK, this book is published under the title The Orchid House A heart-rending page turner which sweeps from war-torn Europe to Thailand and back again . . . As a child Julia Forrester spent many idyllic hours in the hothouse of Wharton Park estate, where her grandfather tended the exotic flowers. So when a family tragedy strikes, Julia returns to the tranquility of Wharton Park and its hothouse. Recently inherited by charismatic Kit Crawford, the estate is undergoing renovation. This leads to the discovery of an old diary, prompting the pair to seek out Julia's grandmother to learn the truth behind a love affair that almost destroyed Wharton Park. Julia is taken back to the 1940s where the fortunes of young couple Olivia and Harry Crawford will have terrible consequences on generations to come. For as war breaks out Olivia and Harry are cruelly separated . . .

Pickpick

I'm a big fan of Riley's and this book was yet another enjoyable read. I didnt quite settle into the atmosphere of this book as I have with others of hers, and I also didn't champion any of the characters either, I'm not really sure why. It tells a story of romantic and familial love and overcoming trauma through the clever device of an old family diary that overlaps the colourful world of post war Bangkok with an English Manor House.

It was not just a book but a journey to the lives of many inspirable people related to Wharton Park. This book definitely won my heart and unexpectedly easy to read.
It teaches a lot: how to overcome tough times and start all over; how to star great human with a kind hard when you did not receive it in reverse; it explains the concept of true pure love and betrayal and even touches the topic of unconditional love. ❤

1. Taken yesterday. Visiting San Jose, CA and just had to get some boba milk tea😚
2. 1 fiction & 5 non-fiction (academic related)
3. Nope. Our A.C. is still on. In the morning it's nippy but in the afternoon it's still fairly warm.
4. Yes I'd be blind without them.
5. Tagged. It's not that I didn't like it. It was just Harry's character that vexed me and I would try to read fast when he's on the scene.

10 week old Mia Rose chose my next book for me. It could be a tough one emotionally, as a couple of chapters in I think part of the plot will take place in Changi Gaol where my Grandad was a POW.

I enjoyed the story as a whole and it was a true page-turner and of course I loved the twist and turns, but sadly Harry's character annoyed me.

"We are sharing a moment in time. Like the universe, there is no beginning or end. We just are."

This book was too cheesy for me. "Spanning from the 1930s to the present day, from the Wharton Park estate in England to Thailand, this sweeping novel tells the tale of a concert pianist and the aristocratic Crawford family, whose shocking secrets are revealed, leading to devastating consequences." This wasn't terrible, I just felt she threw in one too many "twists". As the book went on, they stopped shocking me & instead made me laugh out loud, not the intention. If you don't mind suspending a little disbelief, it's not too bad.

I think I need a choice in between pick and so so. I liked this book but it is not one that I would rush out to recommend. It is two stories within the same family, one present day and one a few generations earlier. 3/5

A neat book for my vacation so far! But why am I on page 91 and still have no idea how Julia's husband and child died? "Seven months ago..."

Bookworm84 You will have to wait a lot longer than that, and also put up with a plot hole the size of Nebraska and some overly trite and convieeeeenent plot points in order to tie everything up in a neat bow at the end. I finished it because the historical part of the story was interesting, but t 8y
Bookworm84 But it is headed for the Goodwill pile. 8y
