Brief Histories of Everyday Objects
Brief Histories of Everyday Objects | Andy Warner
13 posts | 8 read | 59 to read
Hilarious, entertaining, and illustrated histories behind some of life's most common and underappreciated objects - from the paperclip and the toothbrush to the sports bra and roller skates In the tradition of A Cartoon History of the Universe and, most recent, Randall Munroe's What If? comes Brief Histories of Everyday Objects, a graphic tour through the unusual creation of some of the mundane items that surround us in our daily lives. Chapters are peppered with ballpoint pen riots, cowboy wars, and really bad Victorian practical jokes. Structured around the different locations in our home and daily lifethe kitchen, the bathroom, the office, and the grocery storeaward-nominated illustrator Andy Warner traces the often surprising and sometimes complex histories behind the items we often take for granted. Readers learn how Velcro was created after a Swiss engineer took his dog for a walk; how a naval engineer invented the Slinky; a German housewife, the coffee filter; and a radical feminist and anti-capitalist, the game Monopoly. This is both a book of histories and a book about histories. It explores how lies become legends, trade routes spring up, and empires rise and fallall from the perspective of your toothbrush or toilet.

Great collection of stories of the origins of everyday objects! It includes little substories about the objects.

Amusing little snapshots of histories of everyday objects... it's not quite a pick for me because I didn't really learn a whole lot - but it was a fun, fast read.
One thing I did learn about were the moonlight towers. I didn't know the city I live in is home to the only remaining towers. But it totally makes a certain sort of sense. 😆 #atx #keepaustinweird #iguess

Itchyfeetreader We did the bus tour when visiting Austin last year and they talked about this then. I thought it was fascinating - as far as I know we did not have them ever in the U.K. 7y
Sarahreadstoomuch Ha! All I can think of is the movie 'Dazed and Confused' and they party (and climb) the moon tower. I didn't know that was really a thing! 7y
Zelma @Sarahreadstoomuch "Party at the moon tower" ❤️ that movie! 7y

An entertaining graphic non-fiction collection of trivia, full of puns, running jokes, snark, and jabs at racist and patriarchal institutions. I had several LOL moments and learned a few things, too! This would be a great present for trivia nerds in your life.

saresmoore Lemurs are pretty great. They jump sideways! 7y

Read comics AND learn history? YES PLEASE.

Sandra Misread at first glance as "Written and Drawn by Andy Warhol". Probably would have been a completely different book ? 8y
read_diverse_books Hah, I'd love to read this one. 😆 8y

Chessa Graphic histories are THE BEST!!! 8y
Verity Have you read A million years in a day @Liberty ? It's not an illustrated book but it is a really fun and informative history of daily life. (Although I have to try not to feel like a dunce when reading it as I was at uni (on the same history course!) as the author!) 8y
