The author of the critically acclaimed A Cupboard Full of Coats makes her hardcover debut with a provocative and timely novel about an emotionally devastated mothers struggle to understand her teenage sons death, and her search for meaning and hope in the wake of incomprehensible loss. The unimaginable has happened to Marcia Williams. Her bright and beautiful sixteen-year-old son, Ryan, has been brutally murdered. Consumed by grief and rage, she must bridle her dark feelings and endure something no mother should ever have to experience: she must go to court for the trial of the killeranother teenage boyaccused of taking her sons life. How could her son be dead? Ryan should have been safehe wasnt the kind of boy to find himself on the wrong end of a knife carried by a dangerous young man like Tyson Manley. But as the trial proceeds, Marcia finds her beliefs and assumptions challenged as she learns more about Ryans death and Tysons life, including his dysfunctional family. She also discovers troubling truths about her own. As the strain of Ryans death tests their marriage, Lloydie, her husband, pulls farther away, hiding behind a wall of secrets that masks his grief, while Marcia draws closer to her sister, who is becoming her prime confidant. One person seems to hold the answersand the hopeMarcia needs: Tysons scared young girlfriend, Sweetie. But as this anguished mother has learned, nothing in life is certain. Not anymore. A beautiful, engrossing novel that illuminates some of the most important and troubling issues of our time, The Motheris a moving portrait of love, tragedy, and survivaland the aftershocks from a momentary act of cruel violence that transforms the lives of everyone it touches.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I went into this novel thinking it was a thriller but quickly realized it was a courtroom drama. I was disappointed but was quickly surprised at how well written and paced this book was. The story is heartbreaking but also hopeful. There were important topics included like race and social gaps. Told from the perspective of “the mother” observing the trial, I found this book really moving.

A parent‘s nightmare: their 16 years old kid was murdered. After seven months of grief and estrangement the trial against the boy who is accused of the murder starts.
A sad read but it didn‘t touch me as much as A Cupboard Full of Coats did.

AbigailDays That looks far more like a gothic cathedral than any of the temples I've seen. Thank you for sharing another beautiful picture! 5y
Freespirit Wonderful picture😍 5y
BarbaraBB @AbigailDays @Freespirit Thank you, you‘re so kind! It was special to see this Temple after reading a book about the Mormons of whom I knew next to nothing. 5y

JaclynW How did you like Temple Square? Did you go into any of the buildings to get more of the history? I can recommend lots more books about LDS culture (nonfiction and fiction) if you are curious. 5y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW We had a tour around Temple Square. Quite interesting. There was a free performance at the Tabernacle! 5y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Oh nice! The performances are cool. And yes, it is quite interesting. 5y

Holds list, why you gotta do me like that? Two from today, one on Saturday, five last week; I'm swimming in library books. My last library let you suspend holds which was the greatest thing ever. But alas, my new library here in Minnesota doesn't have such lifesaving technology.

Kathrin Why no suspended holds??? Yikes!! 8y
