I just saw this on Audible. Congratulations to Bahni Turpin for 2016 NARRATOR OF THE YEAR! I've heard her on earlier productions. And she has set a standard in the audiobook industry. Her name on any audio title guarantees a stamp of approval. I was blown away by her German accent in "Sister of Mine." There's nothing she can't do! I must select a few of her other projects. Ladies and gentlemen, Narrator of the Year, Bahni Turpin.
so-soWaldfogel is a graceful and skillful writer. I was pleased at detailed discussions regarding the business aspects of running a plantation. SoM offers a unique perspective of the Civil War, slavery, and reconstruction. The "romantic relationship" was the exception -- not the rule. The original title, "Slave and Sister" is at the top of my TBR. The moment it arrives, whatever I'm reading gets bumped. THEN I'll compare "Sister of Mine" to it.
SENSITIVE EDITORIAL EYE?
I wonder about the publisher's intended audience. Unsuspecting readers will be of the erroneous notion that master/slave romance -- not rape -- was the reason for slave children of white masters. I know not all slaves were mistreated. But most weren't favored as in this novel. http://www.sabrawaldfogel.com/books
Having said that, I like the story but not the plot. Awaiting arrival of the original edition. #quote
The voice of Bahni Turpin catapults an audiobook to must-read status. In "Sister of Mine," she so seamlessly morphs between toddler, German slaveholder and speculator, Jewish textile merchant, field slave, house slave, and Confederate captain that you forget there's only one narrator. Turpin's delivery includes the element of emotion. I think that's what sets her apart. I wonder how my reading of the print copy will be influenced by her voice.
The 1864 bookcase was just as treasured as our packed shelves, ereaders, and tablets of today.
"The smallest room had another rocking chair with Rachel's mending basket next to it, filled with clothes to mend. One disadvantage of audiobooks is that if you don't clip a passage when you hear it, finding it can be frustrating. I won't waste any more time trying to find this one. Here's a reasonable paraphrase. I slapped the steering wheel and guffawed when I heard the slave sister tell the holder sister during a heated argument: "You so useless! If you were a slave, yo' own mama woulda sold you!" Now that's pretty useless.

The audio of this title is very good. "Sister of Mine" is now on my TBB (to be bought) list. I am descended from North Georgia slaves; and I recognize the names of counties and towns from my genealogical research. I'll buy the print copy to absorb more of the content. As far as the narration, two words -- Bahni Turpin. I still have 17 hours of listening to go which will make this week's commute go well. ??
