This has so many romance tropes in it, I love it. #Romantsy #Romance #YA #WeNeedDiverseBooks #audiobook #AwesomeAudiobooks

This was a super fun friends to lovers #romance #audiobook! I was iffy on a woman character who's "one of the guys" and doesn't have any women friends (I know those women exist, I just find it hard to identify w/). But Millie's emotional intimacy issues & history with unresolved trauma/grief from her mom's death made the situation very believable. I liked how this gender-reversed the usual "woman teaches man how to get in touch with his emotions."

sammisho I feel the same way about that kind of character! How can you not like other women? We are effing awesome! 5d
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @sammisho Yeah exactly! For this character it did made sense, though, because she had such a hard time opening herself up emotionally and it'd be hard to sustain female friendships without that! 4d

I liked this even better than the first book! Felicity Montague reminded me of Hermione Granger. She really wants to be a doctor, she's asexual, there are dragon sea monsters, and there's a queer Muslim girl character (Sim) who I also loved. I really liked how the book investigated how "smart girls" like Felicity can fall into sexism when they associate femininity with a lack of intelligence and the intersections of early science and colonialism.

suzisteffen WOW I want these books! Sounds amazing. 1w

This was a great #romance #audiobook! I really liked the dynamic between the couple: an icy Slytherin no-beating-around-the-bush theatre critic and a bubbly optimistic Hufflepuff actress. The romance wasn't the only or even most important plot: discovering an old family secret, a Jane Austen mashup audience collaborative play, how Freddie is going to learn to stand up to her dad/business manager, and how Griff is going to save his family estate.

"A crowd of women around me doing the ocean of women's work that never subsided and never changed and always swallowed whatever time you gave it and wanted more, another hungry body of water. I submerged into it like a ritual bath and let it close over my head gladly." #audiobook #AwesomeAudiobooks

I LOVED this. I was a little worried it wouldn't live up to how much I'd adored The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and tbh I didn't love this one quite as much (I think it's maybe only possible for me to love queer books that much??) but it's still the best book I've read this year. Fabulous, complex characterization of 70s rockstars with amazing #audiobook acting. A beautiful, very different kind of love story. It made me cry. #AwesomeAudiobooks

"Gay stories were the ones that traditionally ended in death and tragedy but for me heterosexual love seemed far more doomed."
