#LitsySciFiBookClub I read an article about this book a couple of years ago and thought it sounded interesting, so I added it to my Audible library. Three months in a row I nominated it for this buddy read. Now I‘ve listened to the first two chapters and I‘m finding it extremely depressing, even disturbing. This is not a review. I‘m not bailing. I plan to listen to the entire book. Because I haven‘t even gotten to the science fiction part yet.

RamsFan1963 @CatLass007 Yeah the first part didn't seem like sci-fi to me either, but it gets there eventually 1d
CatLass007 @RamsFan1963 Thank you. I believe it will get there eventually but I didn‘t realize I was going to have to wade through the other stuff to get there. 1d
Bookwomble It took me about 50 pages to get into it. It does get more engaging, though I'm not 100% sold yet. 1d
CatLass007 @Bookwomble Thank you. Maybe if I were reading it in print instead of listening to it on audio I wouldn‘t find it so disturbing. But I don‘t know. 1d

#ReadAway2024 This is the book I chose for April‘s #TBRTarot prompt, “Choose a book which has become a TV show or movie.” My favorite adaptation of Frankenstein is a miniseries from the 1970s called “Frankenstein: The True Story.” Frankenstein is widely acknowledged as the first science fiction book. I‘m not sure what I expected but this was a pleasant surprise. Mary Shelley‘s writing is lovely. Victor, the so-called hero, wanted to (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 play God but as soon as he saw his creation come to life, he rejected and abandoned the creature, providing him with no education or any kind of guidance. Victor‘s arrogance and cowardice caused anguish and death for the people he claimed to love. (edited) 3d

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 Okay! Now I know what all the fuss is about. This was a very entertaining story. Most of this series is currently free on Audible (Yay for excellent free stuff.) This security droid calling itself Murderbot has attained free will. But rather than murdering anyone, it would much rather watch soap operas. I‘ll continue this series and I highly recommend that all science fiction fans start reading or listening.

TheSpineView Loved this series! 🌞 4d

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 The first book in this series didn‘t contain a single murder, an interesting choice to start off a mystery series. This, the second book in the series, made up for that absence by providing us with multiple victims. I enjoy Amelia‘s character and the way she takes charge of every situation. And she has met her match 💯 in Emerson. And Ramses is simply marvelous!!

#Nonfiction2024 #BingoChallenge #ReadAway2024 This year‘s nonfiction challenge provides a list of books, mostly nonfiction, that have been banned for some reason. The challenge is to read a book of nonfiction about a similar topic. In this book teenagers at boarding school drink, smoke, cuss, and have sex. This book isn‘t about any of these things. It is about friendship, found family, death, grief, and survivors guilt. This is exactly (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 the type of literature that young people should read, books that feature people just like them coping with issues that people of all ages everywhere encounter. Recommend!! 4d
Prairiegirl_reading I read this last summer because it has been banned and I feel the same way about it! 4d
CatLass007 @Prairiegirl_reading This is supposed to be a prompt to read nonfiction but how can I read nonfiction without knowing what the book prompt is about? I think a Banned Book Club on Litsy would be a great idea. I tried cohosting the #BakerStreetIrregulars but it proved to be more than I could manage and my cohost was hosting so many buddy reads that she got overwhelmed. Good idea, just poor timing. 4d

#NationalEggMonthChallenge @TieDyeDude Thanks for the tag!! 1) Tag a favorite mystery you‘ve read: This is the first book in the brilliant Armand Gamache/Three Pines series. Her writing is so poetic! 2) What is your favorite way to prepare eggs? If I‘m eating out, I enjoy Eggs Benedict or a good omelette. I‘ve been using Libby to borrow audiobooks from my local library. Someone on here mentioned that they use Hoopla to borrow from their local library so I thought I‘d check it out. If both apps are using the same source library, why don‘t they carry the same books? My library is closed for a couple of weeks for some maintenance, or I‘d call them. Is anyone able to enlighten me?

Librarybelle Ebooks and eaudiobooks in libraries are complicated…very, very complicated. Depending upon the platform and the library budget, eaudiobooks may not be offered by the same library in Libby and Hoopla. The buying models are different on each platform, but essentially the library, per publishing guidelines, buys or rents one copy per title, much like a physical item. If the library wants multiple copies of the same title, they have to buy more, ⬇️ 1mo
Librarybelle ⬆️ like physical books. It‘s not a blanket license for purchasing e-products. And, the costs per copy are extreme, again based on publishers. Some publishers also have a checkout limit or a purchase length of time on the item, meaning that after a certain amount of checkouts or after “owning” the copy for a certain amount of years, if the library wants a copy to stay on their platform, they have to repurchase it. Hoopla‘s model is different too ⬇️ 1mo
CatLass007 @Librarybelle Thank you! 1mo
See All 9 Comments
Librarybelle ⬆️ in that the library essentially rents the title and pays for how many times a patron checks it out. That‘s a really, really basic way of explaining that. It‘s more complicated than that, but it‘s at least basic. Hope this helps! Most library users have no idea how ebooks and eaudiobooks are so much more than consumers pay or have restrictions placed on them by publishers. An ebook copy of a James Patterson is over 80.00 per copy for libraries. 1mo
Librarybelle Sorry - I worked with educating the public and staff for years when I worked in a library. Call it a passion statement. Stepping down from my soapbox now! 😂 1mo
CatLass007 @Librarybelle No need to apologize. I had no idea how things worked. Call me educated. 1mo
IndoorDame I was confused by this when I started using Hoopla too. Someone explained to me that your source library chooses which individual licenses to buy each year for their own catalog and distribute through an app like Libby, but Hoopla is more like a second source library that your library can subscribe to at different tiers which decide how much access it‘s patrons will have to Hoopla‘s materials, but not actually which materials. 1mo

CatLass007 @Cupcake12 I‘ve been seeing articles about them recently and when I found out that one meets at a nearby coffeehouse, I thought I‘d check it out. #NancyDrew #NancyDrewBR As I was unpacking a box of old books I found four old Nancy Drew books. The copyright is 1959 but I have no idea when these were released. My parents gave them to me as a Christmas gift in the early 1970s. My brother suggested that I try to sell them on eBay in stead of donating them to the Humane Society‘s thrift store. If anyone sells them on eBay it will be my brother. Does anyone know if they have any financial value?

#ReadAway2024 When I first started this book, I found the teenage characters annoying. But they were just behaving like teenagers and by the end of this very enjoyable book Felix and his friends had grown up more than just a little. Felix is a 17-year-old trans boy who knows he‘s not a girl but is not quite sure he‘s a boy. As he questions his gender identity, an even bigger question becomes apparent: does he deserve to be loved? It‘s a (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 sad question for anyone to ask and we probably all feel this way from time to time. But Felix seems to believe that, for whatever reason, the answer to the question is, “No.” He spends a lot of mental energy questioning if he deserves anything good at all. But during the course of the book he learns to not take responsibility for everything painful that happens to others or is inflicted on him by others. It reminded me of what it was like (cont)⬇️ 2mo

#ReadAway2024 Based on a true story, this was a wonderful book. It takes place in London during WWII when thousands of people who lost their homes to the Blitz lived in an unfinished Tube station. In Bethnal Green the library was destroyed on the first night of the Blitz and the Head Librarian is killed. Clara is the head of the library built in the Tube station. In spite of the sad things that happened, some things are happy. The author (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 interviewed 100 librarians in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1922 opening of the Bethnal Green Library. The quotes from these librarians that open each chapter are bittersweet to me. In England there is a statute that requires free libraries to be opened. The love of reading and respect for librarians doesn‘t seem to exist in the US anymore, if it ever did. There were many characters and the resolutions of their stories may (cont)⬇️ 2mo
CatLass007 have been dragged out a little but that‘s a minor issue. The love of reading is such a strong presence in this book that I still give the book 5 stars out of 5. 2mo

#BakerStreetIrregulars #ReadAway2024 And I‘m going to add #SeriesLove2024 because I suspect it‘s the beginning of a new series. I enjoyed this very much. There‘s so much of the background of the three title characters and Helene left to learn. And of course, mysteries to solve.

I am in Audible time-out. I didn‘t know there was such a thing until this morning. I‘m not allowed to return anything for six months. I‘ve been participating in multiple buddy reads. Sometimes what I buy is not enjoyable to me. #HailTheBail I guess that, starting today, any books I don‘t like will have to wait for six months before I can return them. That might be a lot to return all at once. I think this might be a good thing (cont) ⬇️

CatLass007 because I‘m focusing on audiobooks that I check out via Libby, books that already are in my Audible library, or print books that I already own. I guess they think I‘m trying to pull something or whatever. The thing is, they already have my money. But I will have to be much more selective about which buddy reads I participate in. (edited) 2mo

CatLass007 @AnnCrystal Audible sells downloadable audiobooks. They also provide podcasts. I can‘t read ebooks because of my eyes. 2mo

#ReadAway2024 #LitsySciFiBookClub #HailTheBail I‘m learning to go with my first opinion about many things. When we read one of Ursula K. LeGuin‘s books for the #ClassicLSFBC (and I guess you can figure out that it wasn‘t my cup of tea because I can‘t remember the title) it was a reread for me. The first time I didn‘t like it but I wanted to give it another chance because it‘s been a while since high school. I still didn‘t like it. When (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 the movie of The Man Who Fell To Earth starring David Bowie was released in 1976, I read the book. I didn‘t care for it then and I didn‘t like it this time either. The first time around I finished the books. Since then I‘ve learned that my book time is valuable and I didn‘t push myself to finish something I wasn‘t enjoying. #HailTheBail 2mo
TheSpineView I am finding this one hard to read too. 2mo

RamsFan1963 I just started it, only about 50 pages in, but it's okay so far. It does seem very sad, and I'm sure it will get more so. I've never seen the Bowie movie version, but I can't help thinking of him while I'm reading this. 2mo

CatLass007 @RamsFan1963 I‘ve never seen the movie either. I didn‘t want to see it after I read the book. It was the whole “the book is better than the movie” thing. (edited) 2mo

#readAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 I enjoyed the relationships in this book, maybe because there are no developing relationships in Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes tales. I did have difficulty following Charlotte‘s train of thought in the deductions she made, which is pretty much the way I feel about the original Holmes.

CatLass007 @DieAReader The first three books are free on Audible right now. We read the first one for #PemberLittens #JaneAdjacent, so that was my motivation for reading it finally and then I had to see what happened next. When I finish the next book I‘ll have to start making decisions about buying the next book. 2mo

Karisa Ooo, thank you! 2mo
CatLass007 @Karisa You‘re welcome. I had two very different reading goals for the year: read more science fiction and read more nonfiction. 2mo
Karisa @CatLass007 I listened to The Light We Carry (M. Obama) on audiobook recently. Positivity in a bottle! I‘m also going to start Supercommunicators soon at the recommendation of a friend. I find that I like nonfiction more on audio. Definitely lots to peruse from this list of sci-fi too! Good luck to you with your goals! 2mo

CatLass007 I listened to Becoming last year and I‘m about halfway through The Light We Carry. She also had podcasts that ran concurrently with the publication of her books and I‘ve listened to all of The Michelle Obama Podcast and about half of The Light Podcast. I love listening to her tell about the way she has grown over the years. I‘ll look into Supercommunicators. Thank you! @Karisa (edited) 2mo
TheSpineView I have seen the list. To be honest I didn't pay much attention. I may need to revisit it when I get in a mood to read something on it. 2mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView We read The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz for #LitsySciFiBookClub last year and it is a nominee for Novel. I think that‘s pretty cool. I‘m interested in reading more of the nominees. 2mo

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 I‘m still enjoying this entertaining and theologically unsound series after seven books. My favorite cookie is peanut butter just like it‘s Daisy‘s. Unlike Daisy, I don‘t have a friend like June to bake for me. Fun scene: teaching the angels how to speak Southern.

CatLass007 @DieAReader @LiseWorks @TheSpineView I‘ll be interested to see what the quality of the stories will be as the series progresses. There are 71 books in total, 59 novels and a dozen novellas. 2mo
