Love in English
Love in English | Maria E. Andreu

A fresh, breakout YA novel that is layered with themes of immigration, cultural identity, and finding your voice in any language. Sixteen-year-old Ana is a poet and a lover of language. Except that since she moved to New Jersey from Argentina, she can barely find the words to express how she feels. At first Ana just wants to return home. Then she meets Harrison, the very cute, very American boy in her math class, and discovers the universal language of racing hearts. But when she begins spending time with Neo, the Greek Cypriot boy from ESL, Ana wonders how figuring out what her heart wants can be even more confusing than the grammar they're both trying to master. After all, the rules of English may be confounding, but there are no rules when it comes to love. With playful and poetic breakouts exploring the idiosyncrasies of the English language, Love in English is witty and effervescent, while telling a beautifully observed story about what it means to become "American."

This was clearly written by someone who‘s as nerdy about language as I am. I enjoy books that are about how ridiculous English is (bc lol). But then, all languages are weird, funny, painful, creative, & beautiful bc, well, they‘re made by people. & the author captures those feelings beautifully through excellent prose. But the plot was predictable & boring, & the characters were weak — besides the MC, everyone felt like cardboard cutouts. ★★★☆☆.

This one was super cute YA romance. Ana has just moved to the US from Argentina. As she grapples to learn the language, she also gets caught in a love triangle. Will she go for the All-American boy from her math class, or the playful Greek boy she meets in ESL? I really liked how the author handled the language barrier. Blocks of dialogue are replaced with “wah wah” noises when there are words Ana doesn‘t understand. 👇

MandaMT Further along there are noticeably fewer word replacements as Ana‘s English improves. I also really liked the supporting characters in this. Ana‘s best friend is an American, but also Latinx in this predominantly white community. As a fashionista and beauty blogger, she makes a splash in their town. Ana‘s relationship with her parents is complicated and beautifully written. (edited) 3y

A story about learning a new language & learning to fit into a new place. Based partially on the author's own life, moving from Argentina to the US. Main character, Ana, struggles to understand the culture & what everyone is saying. Through omission, the reader also experiences a bit of the confusion Ana is feeling. Part coming of age story, part immigration story, Love in English enthralls the reader with it's poetry, heart, and moments of humor.

This charming YA story is based on the author‘s own experiences as a new immigrant learning English after coming to America. High school is difficult enough but for Ana it‘s even more challenging—she doesn‘t speak English, has a lot to learn about America & often feels like an outsider. On the plus side there‘s the cute boy in math class...oh, & the cute boy in her ESL class too. I enjoyed this fun, engaging read. On sale 2/2/21.
