My first Moreno-Garcia and I enjoyed it! I‘m a sucker for a vampire story, and this one incorporates plenty of interesting mythology. I wish she‘d delved deeper into the psyche of her MCs and into the race-class narrative she skirts around. And I wouldn‘t mind about half as much romance. Even so, it‘s short and reads fast. Worth a try if you like fantasy!

Dr. Jen Gunther, MD is my new chief explainer of women‘s health. Her upcoming book is brilliant. It‘s an utterly necessary addition to every 35+ woman‘s bookshelf. Gunther balances evidence-based medical advice with feminist observations about menopause and women‘s health. Every topic women in their 40s and 50s wonder about is covered here. A definite must-buy!

Just when I wish I could go to the movies, Lindy West watches a LOT of old (ish) movies and writes her blow-by-blow commentary. All judged against the “perfect” movie, The Fugitive. I laughed often and loud. But sometimes her snark, combined with love of all caps and copious exclamation points got a little old. Still, it‘s good to read something light. Pub: 10/20/20

Held this review for #caturday because it‘s a perfect book for animal lovers. Maizes balances themes like loneliness, abandonment, and obligation with endearing characters and the pets factor. MC La La (short for Louise) is an animal empath / veterinary student whose dad gets arrested at work because he‘s a burglar. It‘s a feel-good novel that‘s never schmaltzy.

Smith crafted a another group of stunning essays in his new book, which publishes in Sept. 2020. They‘re so spot on and relevant to current events as to be fully prescient. When in fact, they‘re discussing complex conditions that have existed for a ridiculously long time. If #diversevoices and social justice matter to you, please pre-order it.

Need a break from the news? This nurturing, peaceful book with plenty of soul might be a good antidote. I love Nepo‘s work and this one has short (but quite deep) chapters with a journal question and a second question to discuss. I could easily go back now that my review is done and read once more slowly. There‘s just that much to think about and reflect upon.

I saw @Kappadeemom reading this and, since it‘s my old stomping grounds, I requested it. And then somehow, put it off for a few months. Turns out it‘s a fascinating social and cultural history of South Florida. How it was first settled, and how it became a playground for the rich. The reality of today‘s income disparity there is ignored, though. Not on topic, I guess.

The subtitle says it all: this is a blueprint for ambitious political change. It‘s about making the U.S. fairer for everyone, not just wealthy white people. The authors started the grassroots organization Indivisible and some of that story is here. They also name check a thousand other books I want to read. If you‘re politically inclined, read it. It will inspire you!

Second in a series set in English countryside, both current day and (by time travel) the 17th century. Xanthe is a quirky and dithering heroine who also sings in pubs. She‘s trying to save her 17th century sweetie. This one had many mentions of chocolate, which has me in a bad place, given the pandemic quarantine. Wanted to love it more than I did.
