What I Leave Behind | Alison McGhee

Work has been too much, I've taken ill, so what I leave behind for #startreksummerjune is the posts I missed. However, I feel like the crew of Deep Space Nine would accept this failure.

I've said it before, but DS9 is my favorite Trek. It is my fictional home more than any other fake location. It's beautiful and flawed and I'm very glad it exists. I'm glad I can go there and hang with these weirdos. I can always come home.

The end of DS9 was probably one of the best episodes of not only the series, but also the best of any of the Star Trek series. It had an end, but also a new beginning for characters like O'Brien (who somehow didn't get killed by the end of the series), Bashir & Ezri, Garak and Worf. Only part I didn't like was Odo rejoining the Founders.

I love this quote.

#TheChangingFaceofEvil episode is okay, but only in parts, I don't think it's all that compelling overall. Kai Winn is such a horrible person, I'm glad I know she gets her comeuppance before this is over.

Garak is probably one of the most interesting characters on DS9. You never knew where you stood with him, his motivations were always his own, a mystery to others. He could be a hero one moment, then a back stabbing villain the next.

Megabooks Garak is so interesting! He‘s been a favorite DS9 character. 3w

DS9 7.25 &26 #AllYouLeaveBehind The best Star Trek finale so far. What a show! Concludes the series beautifully. Read the novelization! Both leave ample room for further stories. The documentary What We Left Behind explores one of the narrative possibilities. I won't spoil what they want to happen. It's shocking, but it works. #startreksummerjune

Thank you to @megabooks for this run. It was fun! Perhaps we can do TOS at a later date. 😘 😘 😘

DS9 7.20 #TheChangingFaceofEvil, or at least the changing face of Gul Dukat. Creeper's gonna creep, this time by banging the Kai. Number 4 of the final 9 episodes of the series, it's difficult to take on its own. Both the station and Starfleet Headquarters on Earth take dramatic damage; Golden Gate bridge is destroyed (How many times has it been destroyed on tv and film? Less than Paris or Venice, but still) #startreksummerjune

DS9 #3.21 #TheDieIsCast, part 2 of Improbable Cause. Titled for the transliteration of Julius Ceasar's “Alea jacta est“. A great episode, terrible to watch, where Garak tortures Odo in order to gratiate himself to Enabran Tain, whom we deduce is his father. He regrets it. Why this does not affect Odo's relationship with Garak in future episodes is an oversight. I avoid watching it, it's too hard. #startreksummerjune

Sunraven This is making me want to rewatch the series. I‘ve only seen it once all the way through because I was avoiding it for some silly reason, and now it‘s my favorite Star Trek. I will never get over how much I like DS9 Cardassians — okay, Gul Dukat and Garak specifically. Me and my fondness for snarky, complicated characters who weird other people out... 3w
tournevis @Sunraven I get you! It's on most steaming services, in Canada at least. I think Netflix in the US? 3w
Sunraven In fact, the first and only time I‘ve seen it so far was on Netflix. 😁 We binge-watched all the Star Treks (minus the ones not on Netflix, so no Discovery) back to back last year, which was really interesting for comparison purposes. 3w

tournevis @Sunraven Space has daily Star Trek (TOS Mondays 😊) so I'm rewatching the first five series constantly. And it's remakable how badly TNG (Tuesdays) holds up compared to DS9 (Thurdays), but ENT (Fridays) has the fewest good episodes over all. 3w
Sunraven Seeeeriously, I used to think TNG was my favorite, but I realized last year that it was mostly because of the actors (Patrick Stewart can, after all, literally say nonsense words and make it sound reasonable) and the goofy episodes. It was funny seeing that some of TNG makes way less sense than some of TOS, and yet I remembered TOS as being wacky and nonsensical. Admittedly that was a decades-old menory. 😆 3w
tournevis @Sunraven The actors in all ST series are fabulous (yes, even Will Wheaton) but the writing, sometimes, in TNG (season two 🙄) was uneven. There was Inner Light (glorious, amazing) but there was also Hollow Pursuits (cringe). 3w
tournevis @Sunraven Talking about decades old memories, Netflix had the old timey French dub tracks of TOS and I often rewatch them, just for the childhood nostalgia. Same with TAS. 3w
Sunraven Lack of sleep is totally catching up with me; I didn‘t even notice until just now that I typed “menory.” 🤪 (Makes me think of the Harper Hall novels...)

My least favorite thing about TNG might be the recurring megalomaniacal/suicidal scientists and amoral “brilliant” people who apparently don‘t understand critical thinking or logic. 😣 Or maybe the bullying antagonists who set up arbitrary moral conflicts, or ... No, I shouldn‘t rant. 😆
3w
Sunraven Though I will note that I can also never get over how Riker is constantly standing awkwardly (to fit into the shot? Jonathan Frakes is rather tall). And I happily admit that the ending of TNG was unexpectedly satisfying for me, so at least it wrapped up decently.

Oh, have you read the novel that (I think) Andrew Robinson wrote about Garak? I downloaded a sample and it didn‘t look too terrible...
3w
tournevis @Sunraven The book is GOOD! And as queer as Robinson wanted Garak to be on screen and Berman wouldn't have it. A delight. 3w
tournevis @Sunraven 😂😂😂We agree! 3w
Sunraven Cheers for agreement, and cheers for a good Garak novel, then! That‘s going on the definite to-read list ... Garak is one of my favorite ST characters of all time. 💖

And now I‘m about to fall asleep so I‘ll stop spamming your feed for now. 😆

Obviously I knew Charlie slept with Julian and caught HIV. What an #indiscretion! I couldn‘t imagine all that Fiona and many, many gay men went through in the early eighties. Terrible. And lots of kids today don‘t even bother with condoms and casual sex. Pisses me off. (I‘m a righteous ace, lol!) It‘s hard for me to believe that as a child of late 80s early 90s sex education. #StarTrekSummerJune

Oh Al Franken and your #Indiscrestion(s)! My friend from college is married to his daughter, so I feel bad for them (his family), but we can‘t hold republicans to one standard and dems to another. For a perspective on the funniest part of the episode, see @tournevis ‘s post!

#StarTrekSummerJune I‘m not really in a place where I can continue Star Trek Summer. I‘m sorry to the people whose posts I have enjoyed. 💙

Ha ha ha!! I love a bad pun 🤣🤣🤣🤣

This episode was pretty good overall, but I don't care for efforts to try to make Gul Dukat a sympathetic character in any way. I prefer him cold and reptilian, a monster who will stab friend or foe to get what he wants.
