Every-Day Dress-Up | Selina Alko
post image
Pickpick

Instead of turning into a princess, when this little girl opens her dress up box she becomes a different woman from stories her mom tells her & pictures her mom shows her of real women who‘ve made a stamp on history. The way this is written invites you to play with it. For readers tell their own stories to listeners, to look up names they don‘t know together & find new ones, to dress up the paper dolls included at the end… #BBRCPictureBookLetterE

LibrarianRyan This looks like fun. You inspired me at lunch to look through some of my lists and start placing holds. My ILL guy is probably ready to kill me. 2y
IndoorDame @LibrarianRyan glad I could be inspiring. That sounds like an excellent reason to have someone cross with you😆 2y

I had the privilege of attending one of Justice Sotomayor‘s confirmation hearings. She is an amazing woman. Her story is one to admire.

I took a few days off and I decided it would be a Book Shopping Vacation. I accumulated these from indie bookstores, the Women‘s Hall of Fame gift shop, and the Women‘s Rights Historic National Park gift shop. The Sotomayor and Colvin books are author signed. A good vacation haul. #bookhaul

I admire Sotomayor's memoir. Such humble beginnings, yet her perseverance is astounding. She said if she could bottle up whatever she had to every kid so they wouldn't fall to the pitfalls of poverty, she would. Diabetes, alcoholic father, extreme poverty, but she overcame it all. So inspiring!!!

Tales of Famous Heroes is a (B) by Peter and Connie Roop and Illustrated by Rebecca Zomchek. The Tales of Famous is about the biography of 25 heroes and their achievements. The biography is from the heroes of today and history. This book is terrific for independent reading (IR) because it allows the students to explore heroes they might know about and learn about heroes from our history. #UCFLAE3414SP21

StephanyNunez The UDL principle for the biography and source is 7.1 (Optimize individual choice and autonomy). The source beneath will provide teachers with strategies to support students' independent reading. http://www.readwritethink.org/professional-development/strategy-guidessupporting... Adodd1 Using these books for an IR would be great, especially if they may use this book for resources for research! The link you provided showing the different strategies to support students is very helpful as well! 3y
DrSpalding This is a picture book biography, anthology. You can dip in and dip out of this book to read about significant men and women during social studies instruction. The English learner strategy is actually 28 rather than eight. 3y

The first Latina named to the Supreme Court swore in the first woman and first Black person to be elected Vice President.

Justice Sotomayor is an author too: https://apple.news/Ar0gY1MJCRWeH-qMtgj3Nsw

JamieArc I really enjoyed her memoir. 3y

Finished off this short readathon with 10 hours read since I missed the first day. I included all my reading with my students this week which includes these picture books. We were wrapping up our Hispanic heritage month books and Peter Brown reads this week before we get into spooky/Halloween books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has never been intimidated by challenges. She‘s a badass. This is her life story up until her appointment to the Federal District Court. I like that she stopped there, and hope that one day she, or a biographer, will tell the rest. I had the immense pleasure of meeting her last fall at the Southern Festival of Books. She‘s gracious, warm and funny. PS. The picture book is wonderful for young readers.

krayoncolorz Let me tag along the next time you go to the festival 😄 5y
britt_brooke @krayoncolorz For sure! Last year was my first time there and I was super unprepared for the long signing lines, but it was great. Hoping to go this year on whichever day Ottessa Moshfegh is there. 🤞🏻 They announced a few authors tonight but will add more. I love her! 5y
krayoncolorz When is it? I‘ll have to figure out how squeeze it in between soccer. I‘ve never been. 5y

britt_brooke @krayoncolorz This year it‘s oct 11-13. It‘s tricky for me because it‘s the weekend at the end of fall break. Sometimes we‘re still on a trip, but we don‘t have anything booked yet. Last year, I only went on Saturday, but it was fun! (edited) 5y
krayoncolorz Oh I may be free that saturday! I think we have a game on Sunday 😄 keep me posted! 💗 5y
