#ShardlakeSeriesBR @dabbe
In book 6 of this series, Shardlake navigates the treacherous religious and political landscape of 1546, during the final days of King Henry VIII‘s reign. Tasked with recovering Queen Catherine Parr‘s stolen, heretical manuscript, Lamentation of a Sinner, Shardlake becomes entangled in court intrigue, murder, and sectarian violence. ⬇️

dabbe Sansom‘s meticulous research shines, vividly recreating Tudor London—from the stench of its streets to the opulence of Whitehall Palace. The novel captures the paranoia of an era where religious dissent could mean execution, and even the queen‘s life hangs in the balance.

I finished my reread of this book, and although I thoroughly enjoyed it, it‘s not one of my favorites of the series. Part of what keeps me invested in these stories is the dynamic between the characters, and I felt some of that was missing here. I did find the mysteries intriguing, and, as always, the depiction of Tudor England was fantastic.

Butterfinger I think I will Google to see if a second season is a go. I really enjoyed the first season, and I will read the books. 1w

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

lil1inblue The only thing I suspect is that the 3 missing men in the Lamentation case have something to do with the murder of the printer. But I don't have a why or a how. 😂 I'm utterly flummoxed. 3w
AnneCecilie Hopefully everything will be wrapped up nicely 3w

Chapters 1-26

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

OutsmartYourShelf I once thought being a Tudor queen like Elizabeth would be ok, until I learned that even monarchs had very little privacy. I need my alone time! I read a book this month about the history of privacy & how life was so much more communal in Medieval England. Even in Tudor times, anyone wanting privacy was thought of as having something to hide rather than just enjoying their own company. (edited) 3w
lil1inblue And Henry had pursued her so relentlessly to begin with! Now she walks on eggshells for fear of losing his favor. H VIII really embodies everything I despise about the patriarchy. 3w
AnneCecilie I feel sorry for the Queen. Even as a Queen she doesn‘t have much power, and never knowing what is going to happen to you. After all your husband have had several of his previous wives killed. And also the King is way older than her 3w

dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf @lil1inblue @AnneCecilie I just can't imagine how she was able to get up everyday and live her life. To live in such turmoil for your life every ... single ... day. And she had to grovel before the king in the presence of Gardiner and Wriothesely--beyond horrific. Henry was beyond heinous. How dumb are we humans throughout history to give one man such power. Ugh! 😩 3w
LiseWorks I can't believe how family with money manipulated everyone, including the king. We all blame Henry for what was done, but there were whispering in his ear at all times. You have to have an heir. You have to get rid of your wife. You must go to war. There is no money, so start taxing. On and on. Destroy the monastery. Kill so and so because he is declaring normal people can't read the Bible. 3w
dabbe @LiseWorks All excellent points. Ultimately, though, the buck stopped with him. And he'd listen to you one day and have your head cut off the next--talking to you, Cromwell. 3w
Deblovestoread I saw Six The Musical last month and I keep reminding myself she survives. lol 3w
dabbe @Deblovestoread At least by Harry's horrendous hand! 🤣 3w
