TorieStorieS
Treasure Island | Robert Louis Stevenson

Pickpick

I listened to the audio performance and though some of the action scenes were a little too chaotic for me and made me wish that it wasn‘t a performance style audio, I still overall enjoyed this version of the classic pirate story. It has been a long time since I last read it, so I liked having my memory refreshed and to see how this has influenced modern pirate stories. I am also counting it as my #Seychelles pick for #ReadAroundTheWorld!

TorieStorieS Though my reason for including this for the challenge has less to do with the actual location of the island and more because I saw this book listed as being set there- though I don‘t think this is a likely location for the actual titular island… 13mo
Currey @TorieStorieS Evidently the Seychelles were noted safe harbors for pirates so there is a possibility…Loved this story as a kid. “You mightn‘t happen to have a piece of cheese about you, now?” 13mo
TorieStorieS @Currey It‘s a loose counting, but is what inspired me to get this off my audio #TBR! Hahahaha- I wondered why I had to have a cheese and tomato sandwich for lunch today! It wasn‘t even a conscious thought! 🤣 13mo

#readaroundtheworld #seychelles I‘m not a fan of short stories but this was so much better than Seychelles Idyll I was delighted. Many of the vignettes are simply the author reminiscing about some of the events, lore and characters on the islands where he lived for 20 years. The islands themselves with their beautiful and dangerous lagoons are the main character. The stories were uneven but I did learn a lot about the culture and history.

#ReadAroundTheWorld #Seychelles Written by a London policeman who was seconded to the then Crown Colony of the Seychelles right before their independence. It is supposed to be fiction but it is written as if it was notes taken on his trip: beautiful beaches, odd characters, mating giant turtles, and many British career civil servants with much drinking. I think I better find another option for the month. Has anyone else found anything good?

rockpools I couldn‘t find anything by a local author, so I‘m reading Island to Island by Sally Mills. She and her husband have both worked for the RSPB in the UK for many years, setting up bird sanctuaries. They take up a post on Aride in the Seychelles, running a nature reserve on a remote island. So far it‘s well/written but not thrilling. 14mo
Currey @rockpools I will look for that. Thank you 14mo
BookwormM Haven‘t started mine yet couldn‘t get native so went with someone who lived there a while 14mo

My friend, knowing about the #ReadingAfrica2022 project, let me know about this Harlequin romance set in the #Seychelles

A Nigerian princess manages to escape her father for one night only to end up pregnant by the richest man in the country. Can she find freedom, love, and mend his broken heart? She can, but it involves traveling to his luxurious estate is the Seychelles to do it.

Not deep literature, but a great way to spend a rainy Sunday.

Librarybelle What an interesting find! And yes…perfect reading on this dreary day 2y
BarbaraBB Sounds perfect indeed. How nice from your friend! 2y

I haven‘t posted an update on my progress for the #readingafrica2022 challenge for a month. I last posted about a month ago on this same book so it‘s easy to see my progress. About 8-9 countries to go (depending on if you count Reunion as a country, and I read an essay on Mozambique but I‘m not sure whether I‘ll count it). I‘m currently reading books for #Guinea and #Seychelles. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

In 1956, Brit William Travers went to the #Seychelles to hunt green snail and here details his quest. He has little regard for sustainability (plus casual racism), but overall this is an interesting story told in a compelling way. I certainly learned a lot about the islands and their waters. A second book, Shark for Sale, about his shark fishing endeavors, is also included.

Librarybelle At least you learned a lot about the islands! Not too crazy over the negatives you mentioned. 2y
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle He has very much of a 1950s attitude, though his racism isn‘t as bad as I was expecting. He certainly respects the men he works with and mentions that one of them is the finest human being he has ever met. And the racism isn‘t pervasive, it just crops up here and there. 2y
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle Actually, I should rephrase. The typical 1950s attitude is way worse. His is more like casual racism you might see today. Not ok, but not as horrifying as it was then. 2y
