Overall I found this collection of stories interesting with the first couple and last three capturing my attention the most. The others made less of an impression on me but still worth reading.

This was great! First time reading this author. His stories are engaging, and left me to speculate about the ending. Often dealing with moral struggles. Recommend

Set in Thailand. Loosely tied together short stories with recurring characters. This took a while to read but it was me. I'm the problem. Some of the characters and their stories are more compelling than others.

Penny bloods were popular in the early 19th century and emerged as a response to the first-wave of gothic literature. Penny bloods were written by the Average Joe and went more for sensationalism over artistic expression but were popular and made good money. However, they still contained important social issues but were largely transgressive literature, particularly to do with transgressive women. (Cont. in comments 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻)

i.z.booknook (1) In this collection, Dittmer displays some of the most outlandish female characters created in this era, perhaps most famously, Mrs Lovett. Many of the stories also deal with the supernatural including vampires and a story inspired by the witches of Macbeth. This was a really interesting collection to read and made me think about the current debate around modern literature. 2mo
i.z.booknook (2) I see on things like BookTok debates around the quality of popular publications recently and there appears to be parallels with the penny bloods, things like simple construction, ‘fan-fiction‘, eroticism and less traditional authors, but these penny bloods were popular for a reason and were more accessible to the masses during a time when working-class literacy was on the rise. 2mo
i.z.booknook (3) Besides, there was still so much artistry and intrigue in these stories and it was great to read stories that weren‘t written by the great or privileged. I wonder how we will look back on this period of increased reading. 2mo

I've just imported my books from goodreads into SG. I have no idea really how to use it. Any tips for a new user? I'm planning on doing the trial month and then paying for the upgraded version if I like it enough. Suggestions on how to get the most out of the app would be appreciated...or if there's a good youtube or tiktok tutorial, I'd go for that as well. Thanks!!

Kimberlone Tracking your progress on your currently reading is pretty similar to Goodreads, so you will pick up on it quickly. IMO the biggest asset of Storygraph is the automatically created graphs and statistics about your reading. If you keep your reading up to date, you can see your changing stats all throughout the year and month to month. I don‘t have the paid sub, but one optional feature I use regularly are tags to track the origin of each book. 2mo
Traci1 @Kimberlone I used GR mostly because I tend to forget if I've read a book or not. But other than that, it's been severely lacking. I'm excited about all the statistics. 2mo
IndoorDame The stats are amazing! So are the ability to track readings challenges! 2mo

julesG The reading challenges are great, I agree! @IndoorDame Also buddy reads and readalongs. I've been using the free version of StoryGraph for some time now, I don't think I'm missing out on any features. 2mo
Traci1 @IndoorDame @julesG which reading challenges are you doing? I was thinking about doing one of the tackle your tbr ones. 2mo
IndoorDame @Traci1 I have the same screename over there, so you can easily check out all my challenges. I use it to track all my Litsy challenges, and also my monthly poetry reading, and a TBR challenge I picked cause it‘s open ended and I want to read the things that have been on my shelves a while, so I‘m tracking that this year. 2mo
Traci1 @IndoorDame thanks! I like the tbr one you're doing. Prompts are fun, but I need to whittle down my physical library, and they don't always coincide with that particularly well. 2mo
Traci1 @IndoorDame and my user name there is traci1974. 2mo
julesG Same @ on SG, too. I'm doing the #BookChain24 and #52bookclub24 challenges at the moment. 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m @ sharnibee on StoryGraph. I‘m on a mission to whittle down my physical library too - I‘ve just discovered the function to create your own challenges - so I‘ve made one to (hopefully) keep me on track to actually finish the Obernewtyn Chronicles this year. Love the pie graphs! 2mo

What in the late-90's-dELiA*s-catalog-nonsense is this cover?! Can you tell I have a used copy of the 1998 hardcover? 😂 Regardless, the stories were great and I will continue to read everything by Ellen Gilchrist I can find.

Fantastic stories that meditate on death and loss without being morbid. One with a car accident survivor really resonated with me (unsurprisingly). Each word, each scene was careful and deliberate, which I appreciate in a tightly written story, and they clearly served the characters and world she created in just a few pages.

Forgot to take a picture before I returned it to the library. Ran it down to the last day! 😳
