4,5/5 ⭐

Very interesting, but unfortunately I could only follow the theoretical side; my main goal was to apply the practical side, but I couldn't do the exercises at all. The book was a bit more spiritual and political than I expected, but all in an appropriate/sensible way.
I think IFS is potentially a therapy that can get to the roots of issues instead of working top-down/just managing symptoms like many common therapies.

I've always felt that counselling is a radical, political endeavour, rather than a "There, there, poppet" tea-and-sympathy stereotype, and the tagged book was a key text for me when I was a student counsellor.
I'm excited for the workshop detailed in the pic this afternoon at the conference I'm attending: The Person-Centred Approach: Is it Political? Does it Matter?

Bookwomble Not that I introduce party politics to my client work, but ignoring prevailing political contexts is an act of avoidance, at the least. 2mo

#mentalhealthmonday

Late because work started back yesterday so I was busy, which was good for my mental health. I have ADHD so unless there‘s a “fire”, it‘s difficult for me to keep myself moving and focused. And with this mess in Iran, (and Dodgers having a travel day, lol), I would have probably been frozen in bed.

TheBookHippie It‘s good to keep busy. 2mo

Every now and again I need a little tune-up/deep dive into my alter ego who is a fulfilled and effective psychotherapist. This is my calling! Yalom is so comfortable in his skin, lending his years of experience and thinking outside of the paradigm of the field to guide budding therapists. If only I had this when I was young!

Scochrane26 I really liked this book & should prob read it again—it‘s been a long time. 4mo

1) Exhausted. One of my autistic children needed me to help them self-regulate so they could complete an assignment for their Senior Seminar. It‘s my last day of Spring Break so at least I didn‘t have to call off work.
2) I do not care for most of them. I have been studying mental health issues for a number of years and mostly know what works for me, so it‘s a matter of personal preference. I don‘t follow any.

TheBookHippie ♥️ sending light your way… 4mo
Kerrbearlib Sending support your way. I hope today was less exhausting. Good for you for finding what works for you. 4mo
IriDas @Kerrbearlib Thanks. We‘re actually at the ER today. lol. I guess this just isn‘t my week. 4mo

After finishing this book I went on to The New Yorker website to see how many of Janet Malcolm‘s articles I had read in the past and to my surprise there was a brief article in this recent issue about Malcolm and Eissler! Janet Malcolm‘s nonfiction writing about three men involved in the Freud archives - two of whom have massive egos and one wanting to believe in the brilliance of a protege - is so engaging. 🔽

Suet624 Debunking the history and theories of Freud is a no-no and yet that‘s what two of the men attempt to do. Witnessing the clash between two of the men and the heady society they move about in is riveting. 6mo
Leftcoastzen I will have to check that out! 6mo
Suet624 @Leftcoastzen my review is a bit half-assed. You should check out the review of others to see if they officially push you to read the book. 😊 6mo

I'm a third of the way through a 12-hour online conference: "The Future of the Person-Centred Approach: How to Serve a Changing World" and it's been by turns intense, dull and fascinating. A bit hard for my ADHD to maintain focus when people are rambling, despite being totally focused on another person is what I do for a living (or perhaps because of ?)

Bookwomble Taking a walk during the lunch break to clear my head and prepare for the next 9 hours!
Nobody's tried to sell me a book ... yet!

TrishB 12 hours online is a challenge to anyone‘s concentration! 7mo
merelybookish Online conferences are brutal. They suck up double the energy! Also, do love Carl Rogers. 7mo

Bookwomble @TrishB @merelybookish On a 15-minute tea break - it's being quite stimulating now (coffee and tea helping!) One of the speakers I was particularly wanting to hear is Peggy Natiello - she was a student of Carl Rogers and at 95 years old, still as sharp as a tack and as revolutionary and anti establishment as ever! ✊🏻 7mo
julesG Yay for tea!!! Enjoy the rest of the conference. 7mo
bibliothecarivs Is that a photo from your walk? Oh, how I wish I was in England today (and every day)! 7mo
Bookwomble @bibliothecarivs Yep - cracked pavements, damp weather, cold wind and all! 😄 7mo
Bookwomble @julesG I needed the tea! It was a good day's reflection and discussion 😊 7mo
