Your Steps on the Stairs: A Novel | Antonio Muoz Molina

Mehso-so

After 9/11 the narrator of this book moves from NYC to Lisbon to wait for the end of the world. He‘s waiting for his partner Cecilia in his new apartment, that very much resembles the NY one.
Described as a psychological thriller the book is much more a stream of conscience novel and I have to say I got very confused at the end. Just like the narrator. Not sure what to think.

Hooked_on_books Lille looks so pretty! 🤩 14h
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books It‘s a cute and charming city. Much more Belgian than French in my opinion 14h
sarahbarnes Yeah, I got confused at the end as well. I think the marketing for this one was misleading. 12h
GatheringBooks Ooh, intriguing. Love the photo of your travel, too. Lisbon does not seem an ideal place to wait out the end of the world - too many stairs and steep hills (lols). 3h

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it.

Pickpick

I‘m not usually a fan of childhood memoir, but I enjoyed this look back at Saramago‘s young years. Around 100 years ago in Portugal is so different from my own experience, and he tells vignettes, giving an overall impression rather than a straightforward recounting. His writing is just so good that I was carried along.

ChaoticMissAdventures I have not read this one but I absolutely love Jose Saramago. Brilliant writer. 3mo
Hooked_on_books @ChaoticMissAdventures I‘ve only read a few of his but definitely want to read more. The first I read from him is Blindness, which blew my socks off. I want to read anything that came out of that brain! 3mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Hooked_on_books so good!! I have not read all of his (I think I have 3 to go) but this one is my favorite 3mo
Hooked_on_books @ChaoticMissAdventures One of the few that I‘ve read! It‘s so good! 3mo

Crime story set in Portugal, but it‘s not the usual holiday-read. A great set of inspectors (one autistic) and a good and clever storyline.

The writing style wasn't as captivating and engaging as I expected it to be, rather contrived. The story was quite compelling and enlightening. The premise was very interesting, but the execution wasn't fictional enough :)

Library today to get books and a state park pass, then to read at the state beach 15 minutes away. 😎
Does your state loan out state park passes? I love this program!

TheBookgeekFrau My state, Colorado, does 😁 5mo
kspenmoll We can go to state parks free but you need to go early to park- the parks close when lots are full & sone parks have really small lots. 5mo

I‘m still considering all of my feelings about this book, but man is it bleak. One day out of the blue an epidemic of white blindness strikes every person in a large city except one and we witness the collapse of society as we know it. The author makes some unique choices—none of the characters are named and the text is presented in block form with no quotations. It definitely requires a deeper analysis—what is the blindness supposed to represent?

TieDyeDude This is the only book I re-read immediately after finishing it the first time; however, I never enjoyed analyzing the meaning in books. I'm not sure if the blindness has a real-world correlation or if it is just a catalyst to examine the fragility of society and morality.
I have only read a couple of his books, but they follow the same writing style and I find him to be a stimulating read. I recently read All The Names, and it was excellent!

Took a punt that a graphic novel called “Portugal“ might contain the word #Portugese, and I was right! #WickedWords @AsYouWish

Am I enjoying it? Not really. Angsty artist dude treats woman terribly because angst, travels to find himself.

Also, Lettering Hall of Shame, gold star edition.
