First, why is my 9 year old looking so grown?? 😭 Second, he finished this graphic novel adaptation before school today and LOVED it! He‘s hasn‘t read the original books yet, but I love this GN gateway for middle grade readers.

I love Oubrerie‘s art (he did Marguerite Abouet‘s Aya series) & wasn‘t disappointed; the world of Lyra Belacqua really comes to life in this #graphicnovel adaptation. The story is so abridged, however, that it left me feeling somewhat cheated & wanting the complexity of Pullman‘s original. Therefore, it could be an introduction for young readers who might then choose to pick up the original. Or, for those who already know the story, a refresher.

Lindy @Heideschrampf Look for the complete edition: 3 graphic novel volumes in one. I neglected to mention that the story was adapted into French by Stéphane Melchior, then #translated back into English by Annie Eaton. 2y

Northern Lights | Philip Pullman

The tv show made me curious again, and so I decided to re-read the books series after probably... 10 years? I think I was ten years old, and some parts scared me to death while others left me confused. I‘m close to the end of the first book, and I love the special connection between Lyra and Iorek.

LibrarianRyan @thewallflower0707 I am liking it but I think its mainly because I am far enough away from reading the books that I am not yelling at the screen. Plus I have not started the book of Dust series so I assume the “new“ things are from those books. I think they have done a better job than the movie did. And I think I read that it already got a season two so YEAH. 3y

thewallflower0707 @LibrarianRyan my biggest issue with the show is that they really botched up the dæmons. They are not really on screen or important to the plot. I think they already wrapped up filming for season 2, and since it is the BBC I‘m hoping they will not cancel it abruptly. 3y

LibrarianRyan @thewallflower0707 I finished season one last night. And the ending!!!. Not what I remember from the book, (But I have not read the Subtile knife yet). (I have a problem getting sequels read). I agree. You don't see much of them. Then how they changed the lab and who was in the cage and the ceiling. I think it worked for the show but.... and the whole part with Coulter at the end. hummm. 3y

Any fans of the book series and tv show on here? I‘m on episode 5, and I really enjoyed watching them, however I feel like lots of the more gruesome details got lost in the adaption (e.g the missing fish in Episode 5). Moreover, the special relationship between dæmon and human is gone ?.
I want to read the book series again these holidays though. Haven‘t read them since my childhood.

LibrarianRyan @SassyBookworm Yes there is a new spin off series. The book of dust starts before Golden Compass, but is mostly about life after the original series (I think I have not read it yet, and the newest book is the Secret Commonwealth. 3y
