Pickpick

While it is true that the AI is a better character than any of the human character and it is very dry, it does explain everything clearly and gives you a lot to think about. This is what books and Arthur C. Clarke can do really well. Ask big questions and really make you think.

Check out our discussion about it on our Mind Duck Books Podcast ep.60: https://bit.ly/3S8tGMB

For anyone who is at all interested in Homer, this book is an absolute treasure trove. I wish it had been around when I was studying the Iliad and Odyssey thirty years (😳) ago. An unexpected bonus was how lyrically AN writes about sailing and the sea. Just gorgeous. It briefly made me as nostalgic as Odysseus yearning for his Ithaca! 😉

batsy Thanks for highlighting this... Adding to my list! 5mo

The Changeling | Victor LaValle

Just finished The Changeling an hour ago and finished during a reading sprint (well, what counts for a reading sprint for me😉)
So good. Otherworldly/magical realism/horror set in New York City. A family drama in so many ways steeped in mythology. It examined motherhood/parenthood and the lengths we go to protect the ones we love.
I definitely recommend it! This is going to stick with me for a long time.

5feet.of.fury Christine by Stephen King …probably not. Foxglove by Adalyn Grace …I just started but it‘s good so far! & Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman …probably not 😂 but that was to be somewhat expected, I watched the movie again recently (loved it as a kid) & I didn‘t think it holds up, I just want Midnight Margaritas. People like it… just slow for me. 6mo
BookwormAHN Black River Orchard, really good so far. Creepy little town and evil apples 😈 6mo

Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you can't go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does.

Homecoming: A Novel | Bernhard Schlink

Love this idea. On my travels on the way home from Byron Bay Writer‘s Festival, I came across these free books donated by the local library at Casino train Station. I took the tagged book home with me. It was a long wait at this station, an hour longer than it was supposed to be due to signal failure at Brisbane. I was ok with it as what else can you do? I stood in the sun reading as I knew I‘d be sitting on my butt on the train for hours later.

The free book table has been restocked! I know who did it because I recognize the name of the English instructor written in the cover of the sudden fiction book. Probably good that I was in a hurry to get to my therapy appointment, otherwise I would‘ve ended up with more! #bookhaul

I really love Margaret Atwood books. It was a very short story about Penelopeia, wife of Odesseus. She tells her side of the of well known story. It could have been a very long book about Greek women's life and status and all of the history but it was good as it was.

Ps. This book was very very expensive, however it is very short. I don't know what is going on in other countries but here books getting incredible pricy.

IuliaC I've noticed too that books are getting more and more expensive. The cost of living is rising and we're losing purchasing power 13mo

Finally managed to read this after reading Claire North's Ithaca. I liked The Penelopiad slightly better, because Penelope herself tells the story, rather than Hera, and the telling is much more economical. Adding the 12 hanged maids as the Chorus is also a good addition.

Mommamanzi This makes me so excited! Have to get these for my daughter, Penelope. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Mommamanzi They are all good. My favorite is the Poe one then probably MacBeth however these are just as excellent . I hope she loves them. Readers I‘ve read with have very much enjoyed them. 13mo
Readergrrl Not sure if I mentioned it before on a prior post, but I got to meet Gareth Hinds at an NCTE conference in Boston. He was just such a humble and pleasant person to talk to about teens and art and graphic novels and Shakespeare and Greek mythology and so on and so forth! I felt like I‘d found a kindred spirit even though we only spoke for a a little while. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Readergrrl oh I love that! His books are just so wonderful! 13mo
