Mehso-so

Oh, this book really disappointed me. There were entire sections in it that were challenging for me, where I just didn‘t enjoy reading the poems, and I struggled to get through them. That said, I laughed out loud at the short story section, and the book‘s final section was really good too. Overall, the book felt uneven, and I wished I could have taken out some of the poems I didn‘t enjoy and had more that were like the ones I loved. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

from "Advice to Myself" by Louise Erdrich. I love, love, love this poem. And return to it often. Read it to the end. The last line is killer!

slategreyskies @merelybookish I ended up driving to the next town over to get my county‘s only copy of one of her books of poems today. I‘m excited to read it, as I didn‘t even know she wrote poetry. :) 2y
merelybookish @slategreyskies oh wow! I'm impressed. This is the only poem I know by her. Obviously it's great so will be curious to hear what you think of the others! 2y
Centique That is fabulous! Erdrich is a queen. (Although I can‘t function well if I know things don‘t match or mold grows in the fridge, but that‘s just my one of my foibles 😂) 2y
Suet624 Have you ever read The Blue Jay's Dance? It's non-fiction. I read it a long time ago and loved it. 2y
merelybookish @Suet624 No but I will check it out! Thanks for the recommendation! 2y
merelybookish @Centique Haha yes that is a bridge too far perhaps but I am happy for any permission to care less about cleaning my house. 2y

Also for #IndigAThon. Joy Harjo made me cry.

“We did not have organized religion per se; rather the whole earth is a sacred site. A poem can be considered a sacred site, in which so much of our culture is stored, made into form to be acknowledged, given a place, even a place to hide. Many of our oldest and most traditional poems and songs contain maps of the stars, road maps, or precepts of spiritual knowledge.” - from the Introduction
