Woman Who Fell from the Sky: Poems (Revised)
Woman Who Fell from the Sky: Poems (Revised) | Joy Harjo
4 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Joy Harjo, one of this country's foremost Native American voices, combines elements of storytelling, prayer, and song, informed by her interest in jazz and by her North American tribal background, in this, her fourth volume of poetry. She is a mythic, visionary, and spiritual poet who draws from the Native American tradition of praising the land and the spirit, the realities of American culture, and the concept of feminine individuality. In describing this volume Harjo has said: "I believe that the word poet is synonymous with the word truth teller. So this collection tells a bit of the truth of what I have seen since my coming of age in the late sixties."

I feel like I found some treasures while still showing restraint at the Blackduck library book sale.

RaimeyGallant I can tell these were obviously must-buys. :) 5y

A friend and colleague (early childhood teacher educator) is from Singapore but has made New Zealand her home for over ten years. Her husband and teenage son are still living in Christchurch. This poem speaks to the core of what I am feeling as I share in her pain that she has allowed us to witness. Only poetry is able to capture pain and transform it to something transcendent. I shared this poem with her in the hopes of holding her through words.
