I adore good narrative nonfiction, so picking only 3 is very difficult! So I‘m going to cheat. 😀

1. Tagged
2. “And the Band Played On”
3. “My Own Country: A Doctor‘s Story”
4. “The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl”
5. “Eleni”

@dabbe #ThreeListThursday

TheBookHippie Oh #2 for sure!!! 1mo
AmyG #2 is a great book! Forgot about that one. 1mo
dabbe Whew! You gave me some great ones to look into! Thanks for sharing! 💚💙💚 1mo

monalyisha Definitely almost chose five, too. Should‘ve waited until tomorrow & tagged it #FLF. 😂 1mo
Amiable @monalyisha I could have kept going! 😀 1mo
monalyisha @Amiable Oh, I know. I‘m still tempted to just make another one. 🙈 1mo

Mehso-so

Ann Patchett‘s second is ok. She brings two semi-orphans from the far east Tennessee mountains to Memphis in far west TN, where they mix with a black not-quite deadbeat-dad who runs a bar on Beale Street. So she mixed black and white, rural conservative and inner city, youth and innocence with middle age, etc. And she stirs with something like meth. What comes out is entertaining but also has some stereotypes. Nothing particularly rewarding.

cariashley This has always been last on my list of Patchett reads, but I only have a couple left I haven‘t read so will have to get to it eventually (she‘s my fave)! 2mo
Graywacke @cariashley cool. I listened to this thinking I might work through all her novels. I really like her work. For what it‘s worth, I was able to enjoy this. 2mo

This was a re-read for me, prompted by its inclusion on the #AuldLangSpine list I got from @Amiable. I couldn‘t quite get it finished in January! When I read this the first time, even though I knew what would happen, I found myself hoping things would turn out differently on that Memphis balcony. I felt the same again. This is one of the best nonfiction books I‘ve ever read.⬇️

MallenNC Side note: I‘ve visited the Lorraine Motel, which is now a civil rights museum and highly recommend it. The room is just as Dr. King left it, which is very moving. 2mo
Amiable Such an amazing read! I‘m still thinking about it several months later. 2mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Background of James Earl Ray leading up to Martin Luther King‘s assassination and the hunt for him in the weeks after. I hadn‘t thought much about him one way or the other, but this was a really interesting read. I hadn‘t heard of this until seeing @Amiable post about it the other day.

Amiable It‘s so good, right? So glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! 4mo
fredthemoose @Amiable it was really good! I whipped right through it! 4mo
Amiable I honestly never knew about the whole manhunt. I knew that James Earl Ray had assassinated MLK, but I don‘t think we ever learned in school about what happened afterward and how the FBI even figured out who he was, much less where to find him. Utterly fascinating! This is going to be my favorite read of 2023, hands down. 4mo

For my NONFICTION brackets: October‘s pick was a superstar. This was what narrative nonfiction should be —an engrossing, well-researched, well-written book that reads like a thriller. It‘s going to be very difficult to top this book as Best of 2024.

CSeydel He‘s great! I loved 5mo
Amiable @CSeydel Me too! I just picked this one up from the library today (edited) 5mo

Fantastic account of the manhunt for James Earl Ray after the assassination of MLK Jr. in 1968. I am very particular about awarding stars —this one gets all 5 of them. Sides creates a tension as Ray circles and stalks MLK, and then details the meticulous work done by the FBI to track him down. This is what narrative nonfiction should be. And it also completes my #Nonfiction2023 bingo card. Thanks for a great year, @Riveted_Reader_Melissa !

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very good 6mo
AnnR Impressive and some good nonfiction books in the mix. 👏🎉👍Something I need to try and read more of next year. 6mo
Singout Way to go, Amiable! Don‘t know if I‘ll get that one done this year! 6mo

Amiable @AnnR Every year @Riveted_Reader_Melissa creates an awesome bingo card with some great categories for nonfiction! It‘s fun trying to match books to the topics. 6mo
Amiable @Singout It took me longer this year —I had to ponder a couple of categories to come up with a relevant book. 😀 6mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Amiable I‘m already planning next year‘s, hopefully it will be equally thought provoking but easier. 6mo
Singout @amiable Yes, I‘m being creative! 6mo

September #BookSpinBingo wrap up. I managed to tie September with February for my slowest reading months of 2023. Not sure what happened there. September seemed like it went by way too fast. Good news though is now I can count all the stories separately from my #DoubleSpin book for #Scarathlon 😈 #BatBrigade

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Great progress!! August and September were really slow reading months for me!! 6mo
