Mister Pip | Lloyd Jones

It was a beautiful evening, so I spent a bit of time in the hammock in the back yard with Gandalf and my current audiobook. Mr. Pip is set in Papua New Guinea and includes the only white man remaining on the island reading Great Expectations to students in the local school.

Bk3 of April is done! 2 books in 3 days, getting better fingers crossed.🤞The 3rd DS Kate Miles book, a series set in the Northern Rivers of NSW, was another great read. Kates brother Luke is in town for the funeral of a childhood friend when the 2nd of their teenage trio is shot & killed. The main suspect, Kate has to tread a fine line of trying to get the truth without compromising herself for her brothers sake. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2024👇

I‘ve read Caroline Alexander‘s book about Shackleton‘s expedition, & I have Alfred Lansing‘s on my shelf, so I couldn‘t resist downloading this audio as well. It‘s more straightforward & scientific in a logbook sort of way than Alexander‘s, but I still found most of it fascinating as a more immediate, first person version. The part about the Aurora got long to me, but other than that, I‘m amazed by this survival story every time I read about it.

Daisey * I accessed this audiobook through the #Librofm Educator #ALC program. Audio duration: 15 hours 48 minutes 2w

I‘m surprised I‘m the first one to review this - it came out in 2019! Set in #Australia, this is a dual timeline double mystery, with similar situations and some trigger warnings (see below). Abby finds an injured teen in the bushlands, which triggers some horrific memories for her. This is the stage for the slow reveal of the past and present, involving abduction, violence, and what it means to forgive. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ I listened to this and had some trouble in the beginning identifying which storyline was being discussed - I think I would have followed along a lot better with print. It‘s a slow burn novel, with also a bit of romance. I liked it and would read more by Romer. TW: child abduction, violence towards children, abuse 2w
Librarybelle It‘s terrible to say this is my first for #ReadingOceania2024 ! @BarbaraBB 2w
Librarybelle #BBRC #Adult #OnceBittenTwiceShy - so many of these characters are grappling with their past and are afraid of falling into the same patterns, making the same mistakes, or even reliving the same nightmares. @LibrarianRyan 2w

Librarybelle @BarbaraBB I know we have a lot of great books to choose from, thanks to the participants! 2w
LibrarianRyan Sounds interesting. I bet it had an embargo by Audible/Amazon because I have never heard of it, but it sounds interesting. 2w

A brilliant Australian novel about Vietnam-born Ky, the bridge between her parents and their new country, who when she is a young adult learns that her gifted brother has been brutally murdered. There is a thread of murder mystery here, with flashbacks to Ky‘s adolescence, but far more about immigration and mistrust of police, culture and race, teen friendships across class borders, and family struggles.

Singout Interesting parallels with Book of Goose regarding teen friendship between girls of different classes. 3w

Kastom looks at art from #Vanuatu as collected for the National Gallery of Australia. I found the art and materials used (often, tree ferns) quite interesting and found there to be a whimsy to much of the art.

In 1978, LA cop Bryan Vila went to #Micronesia as it was transitioning to independence to train the local police forces. This could have been a testosterone-fueled meathead of a book, but Vila clearly approached each of the 12 cultures with respect. There are also some quite funny moments. Highly recommend. Also works for #Palau and #MarshallIslands

Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle Me too! And it really exemplifies the book and his attitudes. He was such a good choice for this role, to get the policing of these new countries off on the right foot. Really respectful guy. 2mo

This slim book of short stories focuses on how outside pressures like development, religion, and more put stress on and encourage the alteration of island cultures. It‘s told with sly good humor. I read this slowly and think it might get a bit repetitive if read at a quicker pace.

#ReadingOceania2024 #PapuaNewGuinea

Librarybelle I see other reviews comment on the repetition. Good advice on reading slowly! 2mo

squirrelbrain Was it fiction or NF? How did it compare to We Are the Ocean? 2mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain We Are the Ocean is far better. This one is fiction and the last story, about the guy who is trying to do good work but hamstrung by what the aid organization wants to give him, is in both books. Several of the other stories have that same sly humor. 2mo
squirrelbrain Ah, yes, I recall that story! 😃 2mo

I‘m enjoying and intrigued by this book that mixes New Zealand history with personal memoir.

I listened to quite a bit of it today while walking with Luthien. She‘s got a new tracking collar so she can spend more time off leash, and she very much enjoyed it today.

Daisey I finished this today and agree with many reviews I‘ve seen. It‘s interesting, but although I understand the reason for her own family history, it doesn‘t fit well as it is included. 2mo
